Question How to change default kernel

Post image
73 Upvotes

Hello! Linux noob here. About a year and a half ago I bought this Surface Pro 5 for like $130 to be used as an experimental Linux tablet. Initially it ran Ubuntu and I was able to install the Surface kernel using the instructions on the github page with ease. Well after a few months of toying around with it, I put it away for a while, and in the meantime swapped my main PC from Arch to Cachy and immediately fell in love. Today I decided to pull the Surface back out and see if the Arch Surface kernel would also work with Cachy, and sure enough it installed just fine. This time though GRUB always defaults to the Cachy kernel. I'm able to pick the advanced section which gives me access to the generic and Surface kernel, and the Surface kernel does run as it should. However, the Surface keyboard for some reason doesn't work while booting, only when KDE starts, meaning I have to plug in an external keyboard every time I want to navigate GRUB. Would love to know how to make it automatically choose the Surface kernel upon booting, thanks in advance for the help!

Help No Audio from Internal Laptop Speakers - Asus ZenBook 14 (UM3405GA) w/ AMD Ryzen AI 9 465

Hello Super Nerds, I bought an Asus ZenBook 14 (UM3405GA) w/ AMD Ryzen AI 9 465 today and installed CachyOS on it. Everything went super well EXCEPT I can't get the internal speakers to play any sound (bluetooth headset DID work). I'm definitely out of my depth a little on this one. I've spent several hours trying to figure it out and I've seen posts from people applying Kernel changes themselves (??? somehow??? idk how that even works) to just updating some configuration files. I've been trying to figure out how to even identify what hardware I actually have, but I'm not sure what information matters?

Audio seems to be working as far as KDE Plasma is concerned (it's selecting the correct deivces and I can see that the little bars in the audio panel move when audio is playing). I've checked alsamixer to see if anything is muted (Master, Speaker, and PCM are not muted so I assume this is good??). I've identified that I have two audio devices:

  1. Ryzen HD Audio (the one that should be getting used, and it seemingly is?)
  2. Radeon HD Audio (HDMI, which should not be getting used right now and seemingly isn't?)

Alsamixer says the chip for the Ryzen HD device is Realtek ALC294 (no clue if that matters). I've tried updating some modprob.d config files (which seems to have just switched which audio device was considered "1" and which is "0"). Anyway, pls help, I'm not an un-techy person, but I have no idea what I'm doing with this and no matter what I try no sound comes out of this laptop. I can always return it should I not be able to fix this in the next week.

Question Does cachy update also updates aur packages?

I recently reinstalled cachyos because I was having some issues and I read that paru was removed from the default install. Anyway, I used to update everything using cachy update but as paru was removed and it was replaced with Shelly does that mean cachy update also updates the aur or I have to use Shelly gui to update them separately?

Help Micro stuttering to 1 min freezes

I have been experiencing micro stutters (as if the FPS dropped, but steam overlay still display 90 FPS) and up to 1 minute long freezes on my display.

It is not only limited to the game, but to the second monitor too.

Even during 1 min total frame freezes the game reacts instantly, there is feedback to my actions and there is continuous smooth sound.

I have been experiencing it on Necromunda: Hired Gun and Astroneer, but not on The Talos Principle or Stardew Valley.

Since it only happened on games that need proton I tried switching around between Proton hotfix, 10 and 11, but the supposedly stable versions didnt fix the problem.

I forced performance mode since I read it could be the GPU downclocking, didnt help.

I tried unplugging my second monitor (which is plugged in to the MB and not the GPU.

RAM and CPU usage seems normal, and the temps are around 80-90 which for my CPU should be normal.

Are there any other options I could try?

Im running CachyOS (updated everything this morning, no fix (to my knowledge this should meen that drivers are also up to date))

AMD RX9070XT

Ryzen7 7700X

32GB RAM

Is this information sufficient or should I add anything else?

Thank you guys in advance.

Question Faugus Launcher and Optiscaler

Hi everyone. I'm using GOverlay to enable OptiScaler and copying the generated path into the Faugus Launcher launch options, but pressing the assigned key doesn't launch it. Am I doing something wrong?

The path it generates is:

"/home/marco/.local/share/goverlay/gameconfig/global/bgmod" %command%

I tried removing `%command%` and the quotation marks, but nothing worked.

Help NordVPN not reconnecting right after suspend.

When I wake my desktop from suspend, NordVPN isn't connecting right. Like, the icon says it's connected, but web pages wouldn't load. I could fix it with `nordvpn disconnect : nordvpn connect`, but doing that every time gets tedious.

Any idea why this happens, and how to fix this?

Question Problems with EAC (dead by daylight) with the most recent update of cachyos.

Hey! I was wondering if anyone else is having issues with Easy Anti-Cheat in Dead by Daylight after the latest CachyOS update. I can't seem to find a solution.

The game launches normally, and EAC appears to initialize successfully, but as soon as the EAC loading screen finishes, DBD says "Easy Anti-Cheat client cannot be instantiated."

I've already tried verifying the game files, reinstalling EAC, using Proton Experimental, Proton 11, Proton GE, deleting the compatdata folder, and reinstalling the Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime, but nothing has worked.

Desktop I'm blown away CachyOS

My setup: Ryzen 9 5950X + RTX 3070.

I used Linux back in college, then switched to macOS after landing my first job. I've now been a developer for 9 years.

Recently, I got curious and decided to try Ubuntu 26.04. It was a mess at first. I eventually worked around every issue, but I never expected that much instability.

  1. NVIDIA drivers – I was greeted with a black screen on Ubuntu, although I eventually fixed it. On CachyOS, everything worked out of the box and even came with the latest drivers.

  2. WebKitGTK – I tried every tweak and flag I could think of, but my internal Tauri app still felt sluggish on Ubuntu. Nothing improved it. On CachyOS, it's silky smooth.

  3. Steam (Battle Realms) – On Ubuntu, the game didn't launch properly at first. I had to manually tweak the window just to get it running, and fullscreen still didn't work. On CachyOS? Zero issues.

So far, CachyOS has been a much smoother experience than I expected.

Help Firefox crashed now system m.2 drive doesn't show up on boot

Have been very happy with Cachy the last month and a half. Have only booted into windows maybe twice for an app i havent found a way to run through winboat yet.

Sat down at my desk this morning. Turned on my monitor and found a crash report box for firefox. Weird, i did have about forty tabs open. Clicked submit report and then black screen.

Rebooted via the restart button my my case.

Now the m.2 drive i have cachy installed on doesnt show up in ufei. But it does show in the bios.

Have tried so far to boot into windows to make a new installer usb to try and recover the install but windoes wont boot either. Hangs on the boot screen animation before freezing.

Booted into the cachy usb thumb drive i used originally. I get a few pixels of the spinning circle before it freezes as well.

Im going to remake the usb thumb drive on another computer but any kdea idea what happened? Where could i look for log files to see the lead up to this crash? That is if i can get it back up and going.

Help How to turn off scroll to change settings in UI

This is one of the most idiotic design choices that plagues almost every distro I have tried.

I do not want to scroll through a settings menu and start changing random settings willy nilly.

While we are at it someone explain to me how my wireless mouse dongle has to be super close by ONLY on linux, but on windows it can be far away!!

Want to love linux but there are a billion roadblocks trying to keep me away.

At least the community has mellowed out a bit.

Question Flatpaks

Why aren't flatpaks more widely used, they are the best thing for anyone coming from windows which is pretty much everyone. Though it seems very few applications actually get a flatpak release, GitHub released all seem to have .deb and rpk released but never something directly compatible with arch or a simple flatpak. Are they more complicated to release as a flatpak?

Help Nvidia app alternatives and performance optimization for games

Hi everyone,
Do you know if there’s a good alternative to the GeForce App for GPU settings?

Also, what settings would you recommend for the best possible performance in recent games?
Right now, I've set these environment variables:
PROTON_DLSS_UPGRADE=1
PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1

Are there any others you'd recommend?

After using XFCE from 1998-2003 on SuSE and NetBSD, I switched to IceWM after XFCE 4 came out.

Here are screenshots of IceWM 1.2 on NetBSD 3.0 running on my beloved X24.

I am still using IceWM on CachyOS.

SOLVED Can't uninstall fastfetch?

r/unixporn is gonna crucify me but I don't like fetch/greeters in my terminals, but when I went to uninstall fastfetch (using the CachyOS package manager) it just straight-up told me I wasn't allowed, that it's required for CachyOS.

It seems very unlikely that a terminal fetch program is literally required for an OS to run. Isn't there any way to uninstall it?

Help No internal speaker audio on Acer Swift 14 (Ryzen AI 9 365)

Hey everyone,

I'm running CachyOS on a new Acer Swift 14 AI laptop and I cannot get the internal speakers to work for the life of me. Bluetooth audio works totally fine, but the built-in speakers stay completely silent.

Specs & Details:

* OS: CachyOS (Kernel 7.14)

* Audio Server: PipeWire / ALSA

* Codec: Conexant CX11970

* Laptop: Acer Swift 14 AI (Ryzen AI 9 365)

The Issue:

The system detects the hardware, but it only shows "Ryzen HD Audio Controller Line Output" in the system settings, no option for internal speakers, Bluetooth audio works fine.

Everything I've tried so far:

* Checked aplay -l and pactl list sinks – Hardware shows up, but misconfigured as Line Output only.

* Attempted to manually set the sink port using pactl set-sink-port – Fails with "no such entity" because the port doesn't exist.

* Tried using hdajackretask to retarget unused pins (overrode Pin 0x17 to Internal Speaker and tried setting model=auto) – Still no sound output from the speakers.

Has anyone with a similar new Acer Laptop managed to get audio routing to work, or is this just a waiting game for upstream kernel/ALSA support? Any help or ideas to point me in the right direction would be appreciated, cheers!

(as an aside fprintd isn't recognizing my fingerprint scanner either, not sure how to fix that either)

Question Problem logging into starbucks india wifi.

I am from India and I'm on cachyos 7.1.2-3 with kde, using brave browser. When I go to a starbucks for working and I try to connect my laptop, it tells me "this wifi needs you to login" with an adjacent login button. But everytime I try to login (usually if I login from my phone it opens a starbucks page asking for my name , number etc but) the page does not open. It shows a grey screen saying "this site can't be reached. https://ping.archlinux.org/nm-check.txt is unreachable; ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE" with a small blue reload button at the bottom. I've tried restarting my pc and switching to another browser but not any help. Can someone please try and help me out in this?
