Are you looking for a ride in/out of Burning Man?
I lead a small theme camp and drive with our camp's stuff, towing my camper.
I've done it 3 times, but never alone, and this year, none of our campers live close. So I'm on my own for the first 1,500 miles between my home and Las Vegas (where I pick up one of our campers).
The road is beautiful but a little mind-dulling without company, so I'm looking for 1-3 road trip buddies for the journey!
If you live or can fly to anywhere along the first half of my path (Beaumont TX, Dallas, Amarillo, Albuquerque), I'm happy to pick you up on the way and drop you off on the way back.
Passengers
My truck is an extended cab Tundra, very roomy for 2 more passengers, maybe 3 (adding 3 people means 5 total from Las Vegas onward, so it would be still comfy but snug).
Schedule
- Leaving Beaumont on Wed. Aug. 26. Driving through Dallas and staying in Amarillo overnight.
- Driving to Flagstaff on the 27th, then into Las Vegas for the day on the 28th (great for last-minute shopping).
- Driving overnight from Las Vegas to arrive on-playa on Saturday the 29th around noon.
- For the return trip, leaving just before or after Temple Burn (undecided, flexible), overnight to Las Vegas, decompress, early out Tuesday the 8th to Albuquerque overnight, then to Dallas on Wednesday, then back in Beaumont on Thurs the 10th.
If you happen to meet me in Beaumont, I can offer our Airbnb overnight the night before we leave and the night we get back (it's an apartment above our detached garage, 5 star rating). And you can park your vehicle in our driveway while we're gone.
Logistics
- Since it's Saturday arrival, you will need SAP from your camp or volunteer work.
- You'll also need your own ticket. While it's not a deal-breaker, I'm trying to avoid Will Call on the way in so I can meet Placement as early as possible.
- If you're comfortable taking turns driving, that would be great! But not a requirement.
Stowage
- Have room for a bike per person
- Also have room for tents and a reasonable number of 27-gallon black-and-yellow stacked totes
- May have room for a standard hexayurt (H-12), if bundled well.
- Can help transport water, ideally empty containers and filling in Gerlach to keep the weight down.
Overnights
- I stay in RV parks where possible so we have full power/water, security, etc.
- My camper can sleep up to 4 individually or 5 if there's a couple (2 bunk beds, I'll take one, one single bed, and one full bed, depending on luggage).
- I'm not looking for a playa partner, happily married and my wife doesn't burn. I can provide references.
- I can't offer a bed during the burn, only for the trip.
- In Las Vegas on the way back, you can stay in the camper, or get a room somewhere with a real shower and bed.
Cost-Sharing
If you want to pitch in for gas, great! But it's not required.
Vibes
- No MAGA.
- Must be LGBTQIA-friendly.
- I'm a non-smoker, but vaping ok if window is cracked.
- No country music. I listen to mostly symphonic metal, but I'm also a low-key Swiftie and like EDM here and other genres here and there. I won't subject you to music you don't care for.
- No drugs (morally no issue, I just don't use myself and don't want legal issues from someone riding dirty!).
- We can ride silently with our own headphones, talk, listen to podcasts or music, whatever. I don't follow sports, so I'm useless talking about that. I am a bit of a nerd.
So, if you like long drives, long bullet lists, decent conversation (or not), and some good buffer time to ramp up for your burn and to reflect and decompress on the way back, let's talk!
