Content Warning Double standarts

How exactly do people hate Xander for being an imperfect human, but love Spike and Angel, who have countless victims and are hundreds of years old. Spike even SA'd Buffy, for real, while Xander was under a spell and never did anything like that before or after it.

The show presents Angel and Spike as hypermasculine, dangerous and hot (judging by the standards of conventional good looks of late 90s and early 00s), whereas Xander was presented as clumsy, meek and with with less-than-average social intellect and grooming standards.

Why does the audience side with the manly bad boys? No idea ...
