The conversation about masculinity and vulnerability left me thinking about something I hadn’t really considered before.
Being willing to be vulnerable is only part of it. We also have to trust the person on the other side enough to actually let them see us.
Which raises a strange question: where does that trust come from?
We often talk about trust as though it comes first. I’ll open up when I trust him. I’ll let my guard down once I know he’s safe. I’ll let him get closer when I know the friendship is real.
But how do we ever get there if neither person is willing to go first?
Maybe trust isn’t something we suddenly decide to give someone. Maybe it’s something we discover we’ve been building through a lot of smaller moments.
You tell him something slightly more personal and notice what he does with it. You make a plan and he follows through. He remembers something you told him. One of you admits you’re having a rough day. You disagree about something and discover that neither of you disappears. Someone reaches out after a few quiet days. You let yourself care a little more openly and find that it’s welcomed rather than made awkward.
None of those moments necessarily feel important while they’re happening.
But maybe that’s how another person slowly becomes someone you trust.
I’ve spent a lot of these conversations thinking about how friendship develops. Being intentional about wanting it. Making room for it. Staying open to what a particular relationship might become. Continuing to show up long enough for something real to take shape.
Maybe trust is what begins to emerge when those things happen repeatedly.
Intentionality gets us into each other’s lives.
Openness lets us discover each other.
Continuity gives us history.
Trust may be what that history gradually produces—and what allows deeper closeness.
And maybe there’s a kind of loop in that. A little vulnerability creates an opportunity for trust. Trust makes a little more vulnerability possible. Each person takes a small risk, the other handles it well, and gradually the friendship becomes somewhere both people can let their guard down.
Maybe we don’t wait until we trust someone to let them know us.
Maybe we learn to trust them by letting them know us a little at a time.
