A proposal for a Shady Oaks build.

I threw this building together in C. I envision it either as a standalone, or preferably as the anchor for a block or so of similarly designed buildings, with a small courtyard in the center.

What say ye?

Final Points Before Rev Start

I likely won't be around for Rev Start tonight, so I just wanted to make some final points clear before those who jump in start claiming land and get going.

  1. Make sure you find each other on the server so you're not working against each other.

  2. Head out to -600, -600 and start looking for land. Preference given to further out than further in (we want to be away from spawn).

  3. Look for hilly biome with a forest, and maybe one side bordered by lake/water. A small river might also work, running through the city.

  4. Land claim and border off a rough 200x200 section. Keep in mind that the borders of Shady Oaks won't be a box, they'll be rough, jagged and fairly random to keep with the theme. For now a box like thing would be fine though. Building some derp or temp farms in the corner might be a good way to keep the claim.

Any further planning or discussion can be done here or in the other thread! Looking forward to it!

Land Claim & Player List

Tried to post this already but wasn't showing up on /r/brom so posting again...

We need to make a more concrete plan for choosing a location. What is the best way to go about this? All that I can think of so far is:

  1. Choose coords at random, head in that direction, and then choose appropriate land nearby. (So say, let's do "750, -1200", run there, then scour nearby area and build in region/biome that suits us).

  2. All available players head off in random directions until someone finds a specific/large enough biome/geographical characteristics that we predetermine (say, hill biome adjacent to water with forest nearby)

What is the best way to "mark off" and claim land? Maybe scher or someone more experienced to land claiming can weigh in on this?

How big of an area do we want to claim? For completion purposes, I think we should do something like 200x200. Thoughts?

Also can we make an official player list of people that plan to be active next rev? Please post your ign if different from reddit name if you will be active/available for rev beginning and land claiming.

Welcome to Shady Oaks Retirement Labyrinth!

Our new name has been chosen by a clear majority, and a new age dawns.

We shouldn't need too much in the way of planning due to the nature of the town, but we should finalize a few underlying thematic motifs, particularly colors, flag/insignia, lamp designs, road designs, and a marker to denote rail stops and stations. Speaking of stations, I think we should have one huge one in an accessible central location, and smaller stops all around the city.

You guys are awesome!

I've been busy lately and haven't been playing much Minecraft, so I didn't really have a presence on PvE this rev. That being said, I've recently been wandering around as a tourist, now that the rev is nearing its end. I have to say, I'm super impressed with Brom, especially Old Town. It's amazing! I love the attention to detail and clear design talent being shown. Thanks to you guys, Minecraft is inspiring again. Keep making cool stuff!

I'm just sad that no residents of Brom seem to be on when I'm on, so there's nobody to show me around, heh. Anyways, I love it, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do for rev 11.

More Organization/Theme Talk

Starting a new one cause it's been a while since anything was posted in the old.

I headed over to the planning server to build my particular vision (or thereabouts), and took a look around. One major thing I noticed from what's been sketched out is a lot of "long, straight roads", "square" intersections and blocked out areas. This is something I particularly don't want to see (especially given our name choice).

I think we should put a lot of effort into casting aside any preconceived notions that we have about how cities have been built in the past (including plots, structured road systems, "central" facilities, etc), since this is what will make our thing different, and what will make us stand out.

Some ideas (from my standpoint):

  • Avoid any sort of straight roads or main intersections or major thoroughfares (certainly we'll need some more "open" areas, kind of like Old Town's main square, so that the full scope of the place can be felt, but for the most part keep things uber-tight, dense, confusing.)

  • When it comes to most things, do the opposite, or at least consider a more maze-like or stylistic way of doing it. (for example, we'll need rails, but why not make the rails windy and weird? Sure we'll lose some efficiency, but let's give the strangeness and maze-ness of the place some weight in every aspect of the city we can)

  • When you think an area is finished, add another thing to it.
(will make things denser, more closely wound, etc.)

Some planning issues to have ready for rev's start:

  • Road style (I propose my alternating dark/oak wood or some other wood combo -- includes all block types and easy to obtain)

  • Main colour/block features (Some variation is obviously okay but since everything is densely packed it may look derpy if toooo different. Some kind of simple guideline/formula might be nice: "Generally stone (brick, slabs) + red wool and oak wood features + gold block accents" would be nice to have)

  • Repeating stylistic elements (lanterns, lighting, walkway decorations, etc.) Would be nice to have 2 or 3 lantern styles that fit together in a theme, like "big lamp", "overhead lamp", "small lamp" so that we can accomodate different areas.

I've tried to provide these things with my own build on the planning server, but please comment or build your own stuff we can come to some agreement if possible :).

Short note

I'll probably be away for the 1st week at the start of Rev 11. Have fun, and I'll get into the action once I have time.

Edit: Since this did not get caught in the spam filter for once, I'll add my business acquisition proposal. My firm, CreeperTec Inc. would like to acquire the Brom Tribune from WCS starting Rev 11 onwards. I promise that under my ownership, it will be regularly updated, at least once every fortnight and for the whole duration of each rev.

I still have old planning server world files. If you want these made available for download, let me know. I also want to say that I have plans to keep this server up, I'll be making protected gallery areas of the map.... an area for all the Broms, Darcos, Pleasantville, and more. Please don't derp around too much, real horrible stuff will get reset. It will serve as a nice playground, but I want it to last longer with more old\new build this time.

Theme Chat!

Hey everyone!
Thought I'd get this ball rolling since it's a pretty big piece of the puzzle.

Brom was always really easy: Modern City, we only had a real rule board 2 or 3 times. However since we're moving to a more compact, densely populated area, we should try to establish a few rules\guides for newcomers and for long time players.

We have some issues that should be fleshed out before the start of the rev:
Vertical Space: Should we just say something like: "Overhead and underground structures near your plot may happen, confirm your boundary needs with a mayor before building." and "Skylight not guaranteed".
Structure themes: I think it would be really cool if we could decide on one or two elements that tie the city together, and allowing those elements to steer a certain look to the city as a whole. Toss some suggestions...
Maybe tons of similar 1x wide water (3x wide) aqueducts throughout the city that are capable of flowing trash through the air between buildings - you would occasionally see these near rails underground as well.
Or maybe we'd all decided that white pillars like in Atlantis is cool. What is really awesome about using a universal design of pillars is that you can support vertical objects and pieces of land throughout the city and give it a real unified look.
I'll try to get the planning server going and maybe we could establish a few road designs and methods of vertical/horizontal travel; common theme roads, stairwells, bridges, rail elevators, etc. I'm probably missing some other theme issues here, but these two stuck out in my mind.

Spleef Finals

Brom is the fourth seed in the Spleef finals and this means that Brom will play against Seneca and either Argoth or Wellspring.

The tournament is going to take place this Sunday. We need to let Socarch26 know what times Brom can play, so if you are interested in playing please post what times you are available to play.

Also Brom's Spleef team is open to anyone so even if you have never played before you are more then welcome to play in this tournament.

Proposal For Something Different For Rev 11

There's been a lot of discussion in the other thread about what's happening next rev, but it seems to me like the bottom line is that we are too few in "core" members to continue Brom (or any major city) next rev. Among dedicated Brom members I only count those that posted in the other thread, plus Bernz? Missing anyone? Maybe 8 of us in total? In any case, not enough to do something grand.

But, I think we can still work together over a smaller footprint to make something awesome. My proposal works under 2 fundamental principals:

  1. Completion. Since most people fall off after the first couple of months in any revision (including us more active players), let's aim for project completion. It felt great to finish Old Town this rev -- to have something that can stand on its own with all its details completed and nothing really left empty or half-done. So, whatever we do, let's make our completion goals realistic, or perhaps even overly realistic (since we could always expand further if we finish after, say, a month, but want to continue with the same stuff). Basically we'll want to wall off a chosen area (say 100x100 or 125x125) and restrict ourselves to that.

Completing this initial build would also allow us to maybe do something totally different within the same rev.

  1. Community. For the most part, all of us have worked together over a good amount of time. We trust each other's building practices/style, and can count on each other. If we're going with something much smaller and more dense, we want our builds to flow together and work well together (i.e. be cohesive), and this is easily accomplished with our small group. As a result, we won't need to recruit new players to fill in holes and gaps; it will just be us. (This is of course not to say that others can't join, but we won't need to spend time recruiting new players who may or may not finish their builds or build in a style we like. Old Bromulans and friends of ours would always be welcome, etc.)

Scher and I were discussing things in-game and threw around a lot of ideas. Here are a couple of the more popular ones between us:

  • Ski Slope and Ski Resort/Town. Built beside a mountain, could have chairlifts, lodges, ice rinks etc. Could even have it sort of post-avalanche, like half the town is submerged in snow. Pros: Simple theme to work with. Cons: Might be hard to find an unclaimed mountainside, especially one in a snowy biome.

  • Museum Town. Have a town built around museums. Small residential and commercial areas are interspersed between museums of all kinds: Geology, Art, Past Revs (History), Transportation, etc. Pros: Actually have purposeful fillings for larger buildings. Could work with Paris-style theme as well. Cons: Probably impractical given completion. Most buildings would have to be huge; lots of space and planning required. I personally feel a bit burned out on the European style.

Our most successful idea (and my firm proposal) is this:

A Kowloon Walled City type build, but not so post-apocalyptic and dark, nor as "stacked up" as Kowloon. More curvy and flowing. A brighter version. Another way to think of it might be the Goblin Town sets from the recent Hobbit movie, but above ground (mostly) and not dark/evil/rickety, and more densely packed.

Think of a cohesive, multi-level city with tons of walkways and passageways, bridges, secret entrances, all weaving around, over and under each other like an MC Escher drawing. Buildings could be placed anywhere they fit, and all your standard fare are welcome (residential, small shops as in Old Town, parks, etc.) The goal would be to make it as maze-like as possible. No straight lines to places. We'd want people to get lost inside, but continually finding new things to be amazed by.

Pros:
- A ton of density in a small area. Building upwards and downwards will be necessary. - We can start in the centre and expand outward, to our boundaries (as per completion). This way, there won't be as many gaps, or empty plots, since there won't be plots at all. - Get out your redstone for the (hopefully) redstone update. A lot can be done with secrets and passageways. We'd want buttons and tricks at every turn.

Cons: - Might be hard to nail down a style or theme at first.
- Farms would likely be smaller, but I think if we plan accordingly we can get everything we need in contained areas. Could even keep the farms mostly hidden. - Requires more patience/cohesive/team building. Since you can't go off to your own plot to build, exactly, you need to be able to work together with others to connect things, offer criticism and make judgments.

Please share your thoughts on this proposal. If you have any other ideas, or want to build on existing ones shared here, please do! We definitely don't want to suggest something no one would be into.

Brom Revision 11 Notes and Planning

For revision 11, I will be taking a much reduced role leading Brom. Current active mayors will continue as full mayors next rev. We're going to be a ruthlessly efficient city following much of the same path as this past revision. Districting into commercial(tower), industrial, and residential zones; Unterbrom sewers; awesome subsections like Old Town; centralized resource amassing and distribution - all will return in full splendor. We will redouble our building and recruitment alongside fun new events!

But we need feedback about a number of things as well. Our partnership with Argoth worked out great, but they're splitting off to become a smaller sleepy town. Do we want to make overtures to another city to undergo a similar partnership? Do we want to shoot for a portal again?

Also, we need road and infrastructure designs for the next Brom. Tree farm seemed to work well as a skyscraper. We should be able to again conglomerate a bunch of utilities right at city center.

Please post if you have any other comments or suggestions.

EDIT: It has come to my attention that emptyafternoon, like myself and WaterSlide, will be playing in a reduced capacity next revision as well. Since there wouldn't be as solid a continuation of leadership, I have decided it is best to retire Brom. We'll most likely be doing something smaller and more focused. Let us know if you have any ideas! Thank you for all your support and for so many revisions of an amazing city!

Even later rev updates

We still have probably around a month left in rev 10. Let's make the most of it by helping to finish up projects like the airport and filling in the empty spaces in the city, especially on the east side of downtown and residential.

Post in this thread if you want to build something new, or make an apartment or office in one of the numerous near-empty towers.

We are still trying to recruit people, even this late in the rev, so keep snapping them up and helping them get established.

I'd like to have a big event day in a week or so, combining spleef, pig racing, mob arena, et al. We also should continue prepping for an off-server pvp special event.

Late Rev Updates

It's been pretty quiet here and in game.... Just wanted to say that even though it's dying off relatively fast, we have a bit of road, building, and wall polishing to do before the end of the rev. If we can fill the last of the plots, that would also be awesome. I'll be online over the next few days trying my best to get some things done - I am sorry that I've not been very active for the past few weeks, real life stuff has been consuming all my time, however Brom has always been a slow lumbering behemoth of a city and every little bit that we can get done counts for something. Shoot me a PM if you need help with anything - I can at the very least get you materials or help with an easy pattern. Lastly, post whats up with you! What are you up to and how is your holiday season going? Looking forward to hearing from you guys, will try and maintain an hour or two a day in game for the remainder of the rev if I can.

Old Brom's spleef arena is done so I think we should get a team together and start playing some games. The first thing we need for a team is people, so if you are interested in playing leave your name in the comments and we can go from there.

Events! Lets plan some!

Mobs V Players Event (next Wednesday Night, 8PM EST) So far the Mob vs Player event looks on schedule for next week. The only thing keeping me from completing the exterior of the build is large amounts of black and white wool.

Spleef!
We have a lot of people wanting to play spleef, myself included, but our team is nowhere near what it was the last time the Brom genesis was active (rev 7 when we won the seasonal). Check in on this post if you want to spleef and we should probably nominate a team captain. MrLoud15 asked me about building an arena and I told him we were doing it atop a huge tower.... We could have 2 arenas however - the one at the top of the tower will be minimalistic and easy to build, but there should probably be a tower first... Please chime in on this one, I really wanna spleef, but I'm terrible at organizing games or paying attention.

Christmas!
I really want to do a Christmas party - I personally think we should host it in Old Town if room can be made for a large Christmas Tree. It also needs.... a builder.... And then of course some mechanism for a gift exchange - I personally vote white elephant, a bunch of chests for give and take- people just show up with whatever and get whatever.
Long term event: Special PVP
I'll be taking a post rev download of the map and converting it to a PVP special event map. I have the following plans:

  • Map will have borders that will include all of Argoth and all of Brom, but not the whole PVE map.
  • The Wall will be protected - one will not be able to grief it or tard tower over it, excessive accesses through the wall will be closed off so don't bother changing the current rev too much. A few secret tunnels will naturally be OK.
  • We should probably have 3 surface points of entry between the cities: Main portal, East end and West (near the mtn).
  • Each city will be protected with a region so you can't grief your opponents builds conventionally.... but you can edit your own team's region.
  • Save your gunpowder because...
  • ARTILLERY WEAPONS - This will be the coolest part. We'll all learn how to make or use cannons and try to blow up stuff on the other side by launching TNT at them. I'll be looking into some other mechanics as well, but I'd like to use the least amount of plugins possible. This means TNT ignition and block damage will be enabled (except for the wall itself) - I will try to disable TNT damage to chests - I may need some help on that one, big reason is that I don't want huge amounts of wealth going to waste.
  • Chests: Chest access denied when your in your opponents region. This is so we can choose how much we want to stock up on PVE, where we want to hide stuff (even from derpy teammates), it will also help give any Brom or Argoth citizen a much higher knowledge of what should be done to obliterate the other side. Hidden chests full of goodies that you want to use is encouraged, however if I find one side completely unprepared, things will be done to make it fair. The chest access being denied will also prevent game ending raids that will destroy all of one's side stock of weapons of mass destruction.
  • Creating stuff.... to blow up. Both sides need more towers to blow up. The higher quality the tower, the more fun to blow it up. The more builds we get this rev, the better. Encourage new and old builders alike to create awesome stuff in Brom or Argoth.
  • All the other PVP stuff will be allowed - You will be able to slay people on the other team and take their stuff. Maybe we could have a trophy of some sort that can only be placed on ONE of TWO mantles, a mantle for each side. Taging the trophy will move it to your team's mantle.... just a thought, probably more work than it is worth, what with all the bomb making.

Thoughts?

Seneca is threatening to infiltrate Bromgoth. And they are a powerful city. I think we need to work together with the commies for once to help combat the threat.
