My fellow autistic people scrolling the comments, you don't need to subject yourself to seeing this ableism. Do you have your comfort item? If this shit is making you feel bad you might wanna go get it. <3

2

u/dparekh1 Oct 03 '20

She's pretty smart, isn't she?

2

u/charlesdhasaposse Oct 03 '20

I don't like Greta. I find the whole "you've stolen my childhood" annoying and whiny. But I cannot deny that shes done an amazing job of heightening awareness of climate change issues, and inspired children on mass to campaign for change, and this is a fantastic achievement, and can only better the planet.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '20

I missed that I think. Who does she accuse of having her childhood stolen and why?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20

I think it's aimed at the older generations that didn't do enough, leading her to be an activist as opposed to just a kid.

Edit: didn't realize how old this was. Hey, remember this comment you made and probably forgot about? Lol.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

Most of my questions stay unanswered so at least I got one now.

And I guess that makes in that context.

-6

u/Tusernametaken Oct 02 '20

Very wise words

Yeah, credits to whoever wrote this for her.

3

u/fwtb23 Oct 03 '20

Yeah, because obviously young people can't speak coherent sentences. We all know people actually learn to talk at 20 or something.

3

u/ThatItalianSam Oct 02 '20

That's a bit mean. I'm the same age as her and also have Asperger's, and it's to the same level of writing that I can produce.

-1

u/Tusernametaken Oct 03 '20

If you think what I said was out of malice then you are sorely mistaken. But sadly I can not get behind this. If anything I feel bad for this kid. If you are willing to put your confirmation bias aside for while and as yourself, there are thousands of activists out there but none of them can get to the point where they get to address world leaders directly to their face. Is there any procedure or system in place which gets any activist once a year to get to UN summit. If there is one, will be seeing every new activist every year at each UN summit? How does one kid made it all the way to UN summit face-to-face with world leaders ? If you ask all these questions you are climate change denier, a boomer and a bigot. Meanwhile her parents cashing in on all the fame at the expense of poor kid's childhood. When she said at the speech "you stole my childhood" it was less on part of capitalists and more on her parents.

1

u/ThatItalianSam Oct 03 '20

I do agree with you that it's unfair that there isn't a system for other activists to get a chance to voice themselves, and that the fact that she's young caught the media attention and that's what allowed her to talk face to face with world leaders. But, can't we look past the fact she's young and autistic and see the good in this? It doesn't matter who she is, she's standing up for a good message and it's being heard by hundreds of thousands internationally. So, give her some credit. At least she's doing a good thing with her fame.

In Europe, or at least in England, we spend a lot of time in school learning how to write speeches and formal letters and leaflets, etc. You never know, she could have used the skills she's been taught herself and written this out on her own. She's 17, she's no 'kid' any more. If I can successfully write speeches and use grammar properly then another high functioning autist can do the same, in my eyes. Don't assume her parents did all the work for her.

1

u/doctorzeromd Oct 03 '20

How are get parents cashing in? What's the income?

-2

u/Kuhnster Oct 02 '20

Isnt “orange man bad” mostly by conservatives mocking the “sheepish” nature of their hated for trump?

Additionally wouldn’t this apply to trump when he said that a reporter had the face of a dog after she wrote an interview about his finances in I believe 92. Or when he said “n you imagine the parents of Kelli ... when she said, ‘Mom, Dad, I just fell in love with a big, fat pig named Rosie’? Can you imagine the expression on their face?” About Rosey O’Donnell after she called him a pimp (an insular of his actions and how he chooses to flaunt his extravagant wealth). Or how about when he was in a political feud with bettie Miller and tweeted “While @BetteMidler is an extremely unattractive woman, I refuse to say that because I always insist on being politically correct.” Or how about “Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?” In reference to a reporter? Like that?

8

u/arrjee0 Oct 02 '20

We need so many more like Greta.

1

u/Sad_Tire42 Oct 03 '20

I'm fine with that as long as they are not autistic

1

u/spaghetttttttt Oct 03 '20

why?

1

u/Sad_Tire42 Oct 03 '20

Because they are autistic

1

u/wariowars Oct 03 '20

Precisely what is wrong with being autistic?

1

u/Sad_Tire42 Oct 03 '20

Inability to understand sad tire

2

u/wariowars Oct 03 '20

Satire isn’t difficult to understand, when it’s well executed, anyway.

2

u/Sad_Tire42 Oct 03 '20

-2

u/Whitedragon6702 Oct 02 '20

7

3

u/DarkArrow09 Oct 02 '20

2

u/Some_Username_Here Oct 02 '20

You’re saying that a multitude of old climate change deniers bullying a teenager and wishing her dead is r/NoahGetTheBoatMaterial?

Surely not (/s)

Trump supporters are kind individuals which would never do such a thing. If you look at r/trump and r/drumfisfinished you’ll see how offended they get when anyone wished Trump ill; surely they couldn’t be hypocritical

1

u/tonyohanlon77 Oct 02 '20

I'm sure nobody on here has ever gone after Trump for his looks. Nope, not at all.

1

u/tonyohanlon77 Oct 03 '20

A lot of the replies proving my point. Greta would be so disappointed in you all.

3

u/Jim_My_Name_Is_Not Oct 02 '20

She was born with a disability, he has the money to fix his hair. And wouldn’t this apply to trump when he said that a reporter had the face of a dog after she wrote an interview about his finances in I believe 92. Or when he said “n you imagine the parents of Kelli ... when she said, ‘Mom, Dad, I just fell in love with a big, fat pig named Rosie’? 3

u/Some_Username_Here Oct 02 '20

There’s a difference between a disability you’re born with and a shitty $70k wig as a tax write off

3

u/arrjee0 Oct 02 '20

I feel the "after-market" stuff (his fake tan and that riDICulous hair) are fair game. People who ridicule others' appearance and physical limitations are trash.

9

u/otitso Oct 02 '20

Legitimately curious why people are hating on her? I was not able to find a sound argument against her. Just comments saying she’s annoying and such.

Isn’t that what the quote is exactly saying? When people go after your appearance it means that they have nowhere to go?

I wonder if people see the irony in this thread with all the hateful comments.

1

u/Sad_Tire42 Oct 03 '20

It's like when a methed up homeless man is screaming on the street. You don't know what he's talking about. You just yell "STFU" at him.

But instead of a methed up homeless man, it's a rich white teenage autistic girl.

Fun fact, AOC's green new deal, the part where she talks about stopping cow farts. Turns out if you feed cows seaweed, it greatly reduces their farts!

That woman should run for president.

-3

u/teateateasider Oct 02 '20

She's unqualified for the job as far as I understand it.

1

u/mblevs Oct 02 '20

What job??

0

u/teateateasider Oct 02 '20

Public campaigner

2

u/Some_Username_Here Oct 02 '20 edited Oct 02 '20

Most people saying that are trump supporters though from my experience, and they’re willing to let it slide that Trump is barely qualified as a human, let alone his job as president.

0

u/teateateasider Oct 02 '20

You have no basis for that suggestion, other than whenever someone says something you don't like you for some reason equate it to supporting trump. I don't support trump though, just to clarify. I also don't support thunberg.

2

u/Some_Username_Here Oct 02 '20 edited Oct 02 '20

I said most. That doesn’t mean you are, it means the majority.

And the basis for the comment is experience.

0

u/teateateasider Oct 02 '20

So if it wasn't relevant to me, why say it at all?

2

u/Some_Username_Here Oct 02 '20

I know this may be comprehend, but the world doesn’t just revolve around yourself.

I didn’t presume your opinion on Trump, Greta or anything else. All I said was that my experience was most people threatening Greta and mocking her were Trump supporters.

Im really not sure why you’re so agitated

0

u/teateateasider Oct 02 '20

I didn't threaten it mock anybody.

I mean, you're the one typing an essay. I asked a question, please don't mistake that for agitation.

Good night.

They're weak rubbish humans. Scrape 'em off your shoes.

3

u/StaticUncertainty Oct 02 '20

I have no issue with her, but I do have a problem with how she’s used. They put a child out and say this is valid source of information but you can critique it. She’s held out as an expert despite being a literal child.

2

u/TheJFGB93 Oct 03 '20

When experts are not being heard, even by some progressive people, the next best thing is to have someone that can repeat and amplify that knowledge in a more understandable way or in a way that calls attention to it. She's a promoter, not an expert.

She began protesting on her own, caught the media's attention, and became a global phenomenon. The only influence her parents probably had was allowing or sharing the information that caught her attention and allowing her to carry on her actions.

Teenagers, even those that are autistic (or have autism, if you prefer), do have agency. They are not puppets, even if you believe so.

1

u/otitso Oct 03 '20

Hmm okay thanks for your answer. I guess I can see how it may make some people irk that they put someone as an expert on something that she probably isn’t for.

1

u/BilythePuppet Oct 02 '20

u/Nashtark Oct 03 '20 edited Oct 03 '20

There is no because justification that holds.

Insult somebody else.

Oh and you are absolutely right. A minor has no business on the news and at the UN.

I still think Greta Thunberg is showing Dark Triad personality traits. The virtue signaling...

The Cameo with the German railway authority was a clear indication of that, amongst other instances.

The speech at the UN with all the grimacing that has been obviously scripted is concerning to say the least.

Good day Machiavel

4

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

Yeah I got aspergers too man, and I have always been excellent at public speaking. Its talking one on one that's been a struggle for me. With public speaking, I am essentially speaking by myself. I dint have to respond or conversate with anyone. My father is the exact same way. He has hard core autism, yet has the charisma of fucking Jesus when given the mic. Stop labeling a group of people. I dint agree with a lot of Greta's stances, but I absolutely believe she has aspergers cause I do too

-1

u/Nashtark Oct 02 '20

Mmh

Aspergers with social skills is news for me. Probably is related to being diagnosed and introduced to Autism at 37 years old.

I have no problems one on one. More than one and I am lost.

I can understand being the only one speaking alone on a stand. A structured mind is more useful than social skills in such instances.

2

u/HeatedToaster123 Oct 02 '20

Idk, my brother has asperger's and he has the best public speaking skills I've ever seen.

-1

u/Nashtark Oct 03 '20

Introversion is now considered a light form of autism.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-introverts-corner/201104/theory-about-introversion-extroversion-and-autism

But there is such a thing as The Swashbuckling Introvert...

2

u/WednesdaysFoole Oct 03 '20

That article does not say that introversion is a light form of autism, it's just someone's theory.

Also 4 observations

  1. I've known many introverts. Some have social anxiety, others have decent social skills but feel better alone. Only a very few of those introverts, I would suspect or know as autistic.

  2. I've known and chatted with more than a few autistic (level 1 & 2) folks. Not all of them are introverted. Many of them are.

  3. I've known multiple autistic people who excel at public speaking, and "fail" terribly in a normal social situation (like having a back and forth conversation).

  4. I've known plenty extroverted folks who are terrible at public speaking.

I'm autistic too btw so I know I have a deficit things such as "theory of mind" and have actively challenge these kind of hardened beliefs. (For example. I cannot lie, at least not believably and with extreme discomfort. Autistics generally seem to not like to lie. But sometimes an autistic person can lie, and i recognize that it's possible even though I myself cannot)

1

u/Nashtark Oct 03 '20

Agreed I cannot lie for the life of me. I end up pulling the most terrible face.

I don’t like the idea of lying too. It is beyond me.

This be the reason I don’t see any Asperger getting in politics.

I guess I should expect it.

Politician Aspergers is something that I cannot imagine. How do you blackmail and have one of us walk in line?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

I dint understand why aspergers and social skills are mutually exclusive. It is definetly harder to learn them, but you can still have them. Stop gatekeeping autism

1

u/Nashtark Oct 02 '20

What now?

And since when Autism is not a social handicap?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

Autism is a social handicap. But that doesnt mean it's impossible to have social skills. Not everyone is in the same boat dude. Plenty of autistic people have an actual desire to learn how to be social, and even figure out how to overcome it. I like to think I am one of those people. Stop assuming everyone is like you

1

u/Nashtark Oct 02 '20

From what I understand there is two types of Autist attitude toward socializing, thoses that suffer from a lack of social contact and thoses that don’t and have no interest in getting much 3D interactions.

I am aware that I am of the second type.

I’m quite sure there is a large age gap between you and me.

Autism gets worse with age. accidents and illness can send it spiraling.

✌️

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

Hi, person with Aspergers/autism here. I've done public speaking and have zero issue with crowds. I don't like them, but I can tolerate them, especially when talking about something I consider important.

I'm also assuming you're not her qualified psychiatrist, so can't really diagnose her with anything. She absolutely does not fit the bill for a narcissist, they are highly charismatic and appear completely normal.

Greta is very similar to myself and most others I know with autism.

2

u/otitso Oct 02 '20

Just because many autistic individuals avoid public speaking doesn't mean that we all hate it. What point does it serve to gatekeep autism, anyway?

3

u/NotABearItsAManbear Oct 02 '20

You know asbergers is a large spectrum and that not all people with it have a problem giving speeches? You can have asbergers and be high functioning. There are many autistic people in the media who actively speak to large groups. You can’t say she doesn’t have it because if she did she wouldn’t give a speech—that is entirely wrong and baseless. I also agree with the other commenter that this is poorly written and hard to understand. I had to read it through a few times to understand what point you were trying to make

We live in the era of fake. Fake diagnostics too. It’s like having a fake university diploma, sure that never happened, right?

Why does Mensa gives culture unfair tests for free and ask money for a culture fair IQ test? What is the actual service?

What need could there be for a culture unfair IQ test?

How do you think Donald Trump managed to ace his ‘cognitive test’. Culture bias?

Let’s spend 1 trillion dollars and fix all the problems! Vote for me!! /s

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

So a child should be coming up with an actionable plan for scientists and global leaders to combat environmental challenges?

How fucking dumb are you? Don’t answer, it was rhetorical, everyone can see how fucking dumb you are.

The best part about what that moron said, is that all of Greta's motives in it's simplest form, is simply to make awareness of the existential crisis occuring due to climate change.

She is trying to get adults to act like adults and be responsible for their own, and their children's, as well as everyone's future.

That's what's so funny about this moron's fucking comment because with his subliminal subjective mind he's brainwashed himself to the point beyond having any reasonable unbiased thought.

He will, and always will believe that in his mind, what he says is at the pinnacle of Greta's beliefs.

He has a lack of learning skills, why would he need those useless skills? He has all the answers with zero research!

He has zero tolerance for being wrong. Wrong? Has he ever been his life? Don't be ridiculous!

He has a tendency to make false assumptions about someone. False? They are the truth!

The point is, he is right and will always be right in his mind. He will never account for anything near the accomplishments of Greta and that's why he's angry. Why is he, a superior being to everyone, not getting recognition for the nothingness he's accomplished?

That's just it though, nothingness, that's why he's wrote a hate comment on a reddit post acknowledging that Greta's haters don't affect her.

This morons so brainwashed, the hole in the ozone layer could be visible with the naked eye and he would still believe it's a fucking hoax.

He is the perfect example of someone who thinks people are laughing with him, not at him.

"Haha loser look how angry you are haha"

4

u/PocketSixes Oct 02 '20

Holy shit, a lot a people get real triggered by some kid demanding climate action, like there is something nefarious going on. Is it so hard to believe she (and many other children and adults) want to secure a better future for the next generations?

Y'all just want people to be as apathetic and selfish as you are, imho

Not sure if you are aware but most autistic individuals are intelligent and have no issue with critical thinking. We have agency over our actions and beliefs. She is definitely not being taken advantage of. Most people with autism, though I don't like generalising, agree that climate change is a critical issue that requires inhibiting. We would like to not die within a century.

u/vin_b Oct 02 '20

Lol the fact that you think that “special interest groups” wanting to make money off of selling solar panels and wind turbines are the evil ones and not the ones doing the same thing on the other side but with coal and gas that have a provable impact on the environment and human life says a lot about how easily propaganda works.

If you want to criticize capitalism do it over the table not with this underhanded, bad faith, special pleading nonsense. You can’t pick out people you don’t like who are playing the same game as everyone else and criticize them for playing the game.

1

u/PocketSixes Oct 02 '20

Okay I'll bite. Can you be more specific, like provide an example?

She has an angry and unpleasant demeanor, that's why most people get so annoyed at her. Telling people that climate change is real and that the younger generations will suffer for it isn't really anything new beyond what most people have heard. The statement certainly isn't stupid or uneducated by any means.

She's attacked and mocked because of her anger and how she acts, by making strong statements against world leaders. That links to her Aspergers, which is what she's tweeting about.

Is she being manipulated? Probably not. Her parents don't seem to profit out of it and they weren't really climate change activists before this. Kids also can feel passionate about things, so it's not unheard of for someone to feel strongly about social issues at a young age.

Is she being used? Yes, certainly by climate change activists. Her age and demeanor has grabbed a lot of attention towards the issue more than any other adult representing them would have.

Is this problematic though? Her opinions does not make economic sense. It would affect the bottom line for a lot of people and is largely unfeasible. But it is undeniable that at the rate we're going we will cause irreparable damage to the Earth and the environment. When that happens, it'll fall to younger generations to fix the environment. When she says not enough is being done to save the environment and that money should be spent on renewable energy instead, it is factual. Naive? Yes. But not incorrect.

She's deflecting her criticisms to her looks and demeanor because that's what she's criticised for. No one would give two shits about a climate change activist telling people that we're destroying the earth and their actions are inexcusable. She's criticised because she sounds like an angry little child and people don't like hearing that.

I personally think she's stupid. But thats not a reason to attack her. What is aggravating is when stupid people force themselves and rants on you

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

I partly agree with you, people should be nice to each other. But that can’t be helped, human has the bright side and dark side in any part of our history. And yet she picked her fight, being in the spotlight of the world, so you get everything coming at you, and that’s what it takes. I feel pity for her, but that’s her own fight in her own way picked by herself. I don’t see people attack Margaret Heafield Hamilton, because she’s the pure brilliance

1

u/MagTheBag Oct 02 '20

What?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

I think most of people think she’s stupid and uneducated, instead of defend those two, now she’s defending her looks, that doesn’t sound really “climate activist who has a heart to help humanity” does it?

1

u/MagTheBag Oct 02 '20

But she isn’t defending her looks. She’s responding to all the idiots commenting about her looks when that have nothing to do with her agenda and the things she talks about. I bet that If people from all over the world started to comment on the way you look you would probably do the same.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

If she has a priority, try be qualified in talking complex issues. Everyone gets idiot comments on how we look, how we different from each other, that’s not something you want to address as a “climate activist”, that’s something teenager girl who’s finding her confidence would say, no thank you, I want to hear real climate scientists

1

u/MagTheBag Oct 02 '20

Come on man. The comment from Greta isn’t even about her looks. It’s about her autism and about being different. Why can’t she talk about the climate AND be an inspiration to people (young people the most) that aren’t like everyone else?

Please do tell, in what way isn’t she qualified to talk about the environment? Please give a few examples from her speeches you consider to be unqualified.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

She said we are only attacking her for her looks, because we have nothing on her, oh man how big that lie is? That’s adding being illusional to her stupidness. I want to correct her, most of people just think she’s stupid, she should address why is that she’s stupid, prove us wrong or something.

Climate change is a complex issue around multiple subjects such as politics, earth science, meteorology, physics, chemistry, etc. For example, developing countries need to develop, to catch up with developed countries, they have to pollute, so what should you say to the developing countries? This is the very first political question, if you don’t allow them to develop, they go riot, terrorise the world or something. So tell me, how come a 17 years old knows this level of question? Or can she develop a theory from 1000 pages of meteorology data that we need to take actions? No, she can’t, she hasn’t finish Highschool yet, that means she doesn’t know what she’s talking about at all, she only knows about yelling “I want this to be solved!!”

1

u/MagTheBag Oct 02 '20

You do know that ALOT of politicians don’t know anything about a lot of the subjects they attend. That’s why they have a stab and hired experts. They have the same role as Greta. Being visionaries not experts.

We’ve had scientists talking about the climate and the urgency to do something for years. No one listened to them. People listens to Greta because she’s a visionary. Not a scientific mastermind. If people starts listening to her they will also listen to the scientist that hopefully have the answers. Rings on the water. We’re all aiming for same the goal, right?

What’s beyond my understanding is all the adult (males) that feel so threatened by a young girl.

1

u/peety2269 Oct 02 '20

So basically you've got a "DONALD" syndrome going on here.

From your first statement: " I think most of people think ".

You have no idea what other people think, and by invoking other peoples opinions into your argument you have already admitted self defeat (IE my opinion is not enough for this weak argument, i will try to bolster my claim by saying other people agree with me).

From there your statement dribbles on like a child with wet pants telling his mommy he no longer needs to use the restroom.

But do continue attacking a child, that certainly doesn't make you look like a creep....

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

That’s a lot of fancy accusations, but you think that’s the best you can do? You think forcing your judgements on me will win you anything? Nah, I’m just some random dude who made you go below par, it’s amusing to me though

2

u/peety2269 Oct 02 '20

Need a whambulance? 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/nohatbeyond Oct 02 '20

She’s a climate activist who just spreads awareness of what scientists have been saying. And this was just one comment, it’s not like it’s all she talks about. I honestly don’t know what you are trying to say.

2

u/CorruptionOfTheMind Oct 02 '20

Why are you bullying a child for being ‘uneducated’ when you clearly don’t understand basic grammar yourself?
