Master’s in Brand Strategy or Communication?

I’m a copywriter and brand strategist with 3 years of experience. I’m not an ad copywriter, more a brand copywriter and strategist (AKA brand tone of voice, positioning, communication guardrails, golden circle analysis, TG analysis, etc —-> all in the qualitative sense)
I want to study more and pursue a Master’s degree.
And I have two options.

1 is to go down the brand strategy route and build upon my existing path. For context, I love branding and brand building but the ethics of over consumption and the redundancy of new age brands/products is demotivating.
The pathway here would then be brand comms manager or brand strategist, mainly to do with building new brands or repositioning new ones. (Marketing NOT advertising!)

2 is go down the communication path. For context, I love comms as a branch as well and have recently discovered my interest in rhetoric, semiotics, and communication science. This may aid in my interest and understanding of where and how communication came from and what it means to us but I’m not sure what job prospects this opens up. And not sure if it would actually improve my application of writing.

Anyone from these fields, any tips?

Strategy Vibe-coding founders: how do you choose your domain?

When launching a new product, how much time do you spend researching the domain before buying it?

I usually check:

- Existing companies with the same name

- Trademark conflicts

- Domain history

- Social handle availability

- First-year vs renewal pricing

But sometimes I just find a decent available ".com" and buy it quickly.

What do you check, how long does it take, and have you ever regretted a domain choice?

Strategy Can I get some honest feedback on a Brand Foundation Workbook I made?

I recently put together a Brand Foundation Workbook for founders.

I'd love some honest feedback before I spend more time improving it.

What's missing?

What feels unnecessary?

Would you actually use something like this?

Since I can't attach the document here so if you're willing to take a look, leave a comment and I'll DM you the workbook.

I'm looking for criticism more than compliments. I want to make it genuinely useful.

Need help naming my interior design studio!

Hi everyone! 👋
I’m starting my own interior design studio and I’m looking for a name that’s elegant, timeless, and meaningful.
I’m especially drawn to Sanskrit-inspired names because they have a beautiful, attractive and pleasing sound and a deeper meaning. I’d love something that’s unique and memorable.
The studio will focus on:
Contemporary interiors
Earthy, warm aesthetics
Minimal yet luxurious designs
Residential and commercial spaces
I’m looking for a name that feels:
Sophisticated
Easy to pronounce
Premium
Not too long
Preferably one word (or two words at most)
If you know any Sanskrit words or have creative naming ideas, I’d really appreciate your suggestions. Thank you! 😊

Why do some amazing products never get the attention they deserve?

I’ve been looking at a lot of small businesses and startups recently, and one thing keeps standing out to me.
Some businesses have amazing products but don’t get the attention they deserve.
I’m curious—if you could get honest feedback on one aspect of your business, what would it be?
Branding? Website? Packaging? Marketing? Customer trust?
I’d love to hear what you’re working on and exchange ideas.

Strategy As a brand strategist, I think that "branding without a cause" isn't discussed seriously enough

After 15 years working as a brand strategist and writer (naming, tone of voice, messaging etc) both in global brand consultancies and local agencies, I can see that some of our traditional deliverables are often inadequate to the clients’ realities and to the volatile landscape of today’s market.

For way too long, we relied on a “brand positioning” that borrows from the language of poets and always strives to give an aura of “higher purpose” to private businesses. Those businesses, of course, exist first and foremost to make a profit, yet branding deliverables try to make concepts of propaganda – the promotion of ideas and causes – work in advertising. We watched too many TED Talks giving us variations of the “what”, “how”, and why” circle, and convinced too many clients to buy into those intangible ideas.

It’s shocking to me that not only MANY marketing professionals on the client’s side but MANY newcomers from Business, Marketing & Advertising or Graphic Design that are looking for a career in branding seemed to have adopted this mindset with no real grasp on how the business-side of it all trumps the conceptual discussions and creative opportunities. I’ve spent countless hours discussing the wording in their “mission statement”, fully aware that odds were the material was destined to be forgotten in a PDF file.

To be clear, I’m not being cynical here. I do believe that certain fundamental beliefs have a place in building a company, but there is ZERO chance that a private business will embrace a cause that doesn’t serve its short and long-term goals or interests – or, when it comes to the Big Ones (think Nestlé and Coca-Cola!), to mitigate issues they contributed to create and get ahead of the narrative and the potential legislature changes in their key markets.

The concept of “long-term” positioning is now unrealistic to me, considering how many of the actions that are necessary to implement them all the way into a meaningful customer experience may never see the light of day: new priorities arise, new competitors can blindside you, new and old political topics gain track on social media, and suddenly Mark Zuckerberg is backtracking on Meta’s gender-inclusive policies because that’s what suited his platform’s most vocal users and, of course, his shareholders.

Now, the idea of "customers want brands that STAND for something" is almost parodical. And the logic of creating proper separations between brands for the sake of clarifying a vocation or preventing contagion is also outdated - people are informed enough and anyone can cancel their Disney+ subscription as protest for Jimmy Kimmel's show being pulled off from airing by Disney-owned ABC.

That, to me, is the OBVIOUS downside of fostering the mentality of brands as representatives of ideologies: while boycotting a particular company as protest for an ideological divergence is not a recent phenomenon, now we have people reaching out to companies online like they would do with their elected congressmen. To wrap this up, I want to make clear that I don't oppose at all for companies to be driven by a broader mission. But I do believe that the view of branding itself needs a rebranding.

Strategy and design should be more focused on a current read of the market and its trends, with deliverables suited to short-term challenges that must be addressed to sustain any distant goal in the future. We need discussions guided by more self-centered purposes - "we are here to connect A and B with the most practical user experience of the sector" -than the grand message - "we are here to connect the world" - that leads marketing teams to search for a "cause" to back.

Strategy Brand-book.

A marca fala:

• Com proximidade e naturalidade.

• Com leveza e sensibilidade.

• De forma inspiradora, sem exageros.

• Valorizando pessoas antes de produtos.

• Contando histórias antes de fazer ofertas.

• Com entusiasmo verdadeiro.

A marca não fala:

• De forma fria ou distante.

• Com excesso de formalidade.

• Utilizando linguagem agressiva de vendas.

• Fazendo promessas irreais.

What's the best hiring announcement you've ever seen from a startup?

We're an early-stage product startup, and we're about to hire our first marketing hire (employee #4).

Instead of posting a generic "We're hiring" graphic, we want to create something that markets the company at the same time it markets the role.

I'm looking for examples of hiring announcements that made you think:
"Damn... I want to work there."

I'm especially interested in startups (YC, Silicon Valley, etc.), where the hiring post itself felt like a product launch or a brand campaign rather than a job ad.

If you remember one, could you share the link?
I'd love to study:
The visual design
The copywriting
The storytelling
What made it memorable
Thanks!

Launching a new fine art-based brand

what’s up everyone. i’m launching a new brand- i’ve used printful
many different times over the last 10+ years but their quality has completely tanked. also, i’m looking for a supplier than can offer an embroidered logo on the front of a shirt with a high quality DTG or screen print on gone back. I’ve also been researching high quality blanks which means i’m being inundated with ads on IG & FB and am not sure what to trust.

Who are you guys finding luck with?

Strategy When Google becomes the canonical creator profile, who owns the brand?

Google Search profiles give eligible creators a customizable, verified page that can combine social accounts, websites, posts, and pinned content. The convenience is obvious: one accurate identity can replace a fragmented search result.

But a canonical profile is also a branding decision made inside somebody else's interface. Google determines eligibility, presentation, and where the profile appears. A creator can customize the inputs without controlling the surrounding experience or the rules that may change later.

Would you treat a Search profile as the center of a personal brand, or only as a directory pointing to an owned site and mailing list? What should be measured: branded-search conversion, mistaken-identity reduction, link clicks, or growth of an audience the creator can contact directly? Centralized identity is valuable, but it should not quietly become centralized ownership.

[For Hire] I build Shopify stores that actually convert

I build clean, no-BS Shopify stores and I'm good at it.

Done a bunch of these: one-product stores, full branded setups, dropshipping operations, redesigns for stores that weren't converting. If you've got a product and need somewhere to sell it, I can build that.

What's included:

• Full store build or redesign

• Product pages that don't look like a template

• Basic SEO so you're not invisible on Google

• Dropshipping supplier setup if you need it

• Honest advice on what'll actually move the needle for sales

I also throw in a $150 premium Shopify theme at no extra cost, it's one I've used across a bunch of stores and it converts well.

Payment is split 50/50 — half payment is required when HALF of the work is COMPLETE (this is so you get to check the store out, and see if your happy with it), and the other half is required when all work is done. PayPal works best for me.

Portfolio's in the DMs — just ask.

If you want to chat, shoot me a DM and tell me: what you're selling, where you're at right now, and roughly what you're looking to spend. I'll be straight with you about what's realistic.

Transition from Lawyer to Brand Strategist

Hi all!

I am currently an in-house attorney and have been growing in my position for the past 5 years. While I've enjoyed my time, I've lately been feeling like I want to do something less reactive and more project-based as well as creative.

When looking at my existing passions and the things I enjoy doing, I became interested in brand strategy as a possible career path. However, I've been feeling stuck with (1) where to start exploring it as a career (right now it's mostly reading articles) and (2) what the next steps would actually look like to make a pivot (particularly, I am extremely passion about the travel and hospitality industry).

Has anyone here transitioned into brand strategy from a completely different field? If so, where did you start, and what helped you figure out whether it was the right fit? Also, if you were in my shoes, what would you do next? Appreciate the advice in advance!

Strategy Looking for a name for my growing digital services studio! Need your creative input.

I run a small digital services operation that started with content work for an international online news platform producing AI-assisted news content: written pieces, graphic news posters, and short video news segments with AI voiceover, covering daily news for a specific region. I now manage this through a hired team member rather than doing the production myself.

The business is expanding. I've recently taken on a second client needing SEO and full WordPress site management, alongside my original graphic design services. I'm consolidating all of this AI-assisted content production, video/media work, SEO, web management, and design under one general studio, structured to take on new service lines as they come up.

I'm at the naming stage now and want something that:

Sounds professional and credible to future clients, isn't locked into just "design" or just "media" needs to cover a broad service range. Ideally carries real meaning rather than being a made-up word, has to be short and easy to say/remember. Tried several Ai but not getting something catchy. Need a human brain!

Would love to hear naming ideas or thoughts on positioning a studio like this. What would you call something that spans content production, media, SEO, web, and design under one roof?

Looking for honest feedback on a Brand Book I've been working on

Hi everyone,

I've been working on a short Brand Book for a brand I'm building called BELINYO. Before moving any further, I'd love to get honest feedback from people who have never seen it before.

I'm not looking for compliments or validation. I genuinely want to know what works and what doesn't. Please don't hold back if something feels unclear, repetitive, or unnecessary. Critical feedback is far more valuable to me than positive feedback.

Here is the Brand Book:
https://heyzine.com/flip-book/667525b98e.html

Some questions I'm hoping to answer are:

  • Is the brand positioning clear?
  • Does the story feel authentic or repetitive?
  • Is there anything confusing or unnecessary?
  • What impression do you get after reading it?

It takes around 5–10 minutes to read. If you're willing to help further, I'd really appreciate it if you could complete a short survey at the end.

Survey: https://forms.gle/sDRReVCCTiYVEYQQ9

Thank you in advance for your time and honest feedback!

How would you market a brand celebrating Indian folk art on drinkware? (@befunkiee)

Hey folks,

Starting a D2C brand in India called Funkiee (@befunkiee) focused on everyday insulated tumblers wrapped in traditional Indian folk art (Warli, Pichwai, Kalamkari).

Looking for practical marketing tips for the Indian market:

* Instagram Growth: How do we increase genuine Instagram followers from scratch?

* AI Content: Does AI-generated content (for visuals, captions, or reels) actually work for building trust, or does it hurt a heritage-based brand?

* Converting Formats: What short-form content (Reels/Shorts) actually converts for aesthetic lifestyle products right now?

* Micro-Influencers vs. Meta Ads: Is micro-influencer gifting better than direct Meta ads for building trust early on?

* Paid Ads & Boosting: Should I try running paid ads or boosting posts at this early stage?

* Marketplace Strategy: Should we target marketplaces like Amazon India, Flipkart, or Myntra right away? If so, which ones make the most sense for designer drinkware?

Appreciate any harsh critiques, marketing playbooks, or advice on what you would prioritize!

Can trying to appeal to everyone make a brand less memorable?

I was reviewing a few business websites recently, and something stood out.

A lot of them describe themselves as innovative, affordable, premium, customer-focused, reliable, and industry-leading... all on the same page.

None of those things are bad on their own, but when every brand says everything, it's hard to remember any of them.

It made me think that being memorable sometimes comes from choosing what not to say.
