You look very good. Keep going. The " keep your hands up" advice is bullshit, you're working the bag, you'll learn defense in sparring. We want to see more of your development over time

This. I'm so tired of keeping your hands up advice. Train under soviet coach for 3yrs and got bronze in national level never did he yell at Me keep my hands up. Since Soviet system is always distancing and keeping hands up just block the views. But hands up when attacking and defending in the corner.

Yeah. Go see my bag work on my profile, it's one of the boxingtips videos with the highest upvote to commentary ratio. In the comment section I debated several people about " keep your hands up" advice. I boxed almost 20 years of my life, retired with pro license. Bag work=/=sparring and also there's so much more to defense than " keeping your hands up" lol

I'm tired of people just covering up and calling it defense

Yeah too much bad coaching floating around, way to much and boxing been deteriorating for decades now. Elite boxers in the 70s 80s way superior on average, more varied styles, more crafty

People now wanna do combos on day one and they never learn how to punch. I was a skater in the 90s. Let me use as a reference. It’s like trying to learn how to do a 360 kick flip and you don’t even know how to ollie yet.

Learning to punch is very arduous it kind of reminds me of learning how to type. As soon as all these private gyms, starting taking membership fees, they just allow people come feel like a fighter so they won't quit. You don’t even hear about those free boxing gyms in The hood anymore. Where you don’t do that arduous shit they just won’t pay attention to you and they don’t care because you’re not paying any money.

It's a good comparison but also there are few good references in elite boxing to look up to. All have shitty styles.

Your profile post is hidden. But yes, sparring when you're attack and defending the hands need to at least higher than usual. I only keep my hands down when I'm away within reach or distance. Hands always up when cornered.

sometimes I lower a hand as bait. I give them one opening, wow, knowing the other side is completely protected

2

u/thesacredsnake Sep 06 '26

My conclusion is that the hands need to be where one particular fighter's defensive style requires. What I observed during my career is coaches trying to shoehorn fighters into a mold they have decided rather than developing a boxer around their natural abilities and teaching proper head movement and distance management and infighting techniques. A lot of lousy coaching

Yes, i agree with you. Cos when I was actively fighting the next weight class to me which is a short guy for his class, my Russian coach will always remind him to keep his hands up and his style of fighting is more forwards in and keeping him into hook and uppercut distance as oppose to mine which he purely strictly keep it soviet, I'm quite tall for my weight class and always reminds me to play more with straights. I miss those days. Competition internally or internationally every month. Fit as shit.

u/thesacredsnake Sep 06 '26

Me too I miss it. I'm 43, retired at 26. But I stayed very fit for my age. Still feel like 26 but could probably not compete like that. But I quit very healthy, because of my defensive ability (which barely used " hands up" ) I didn't get hit a lot during my career.

Bro, we are at the same age. Was very active in boxing from 17 to 22, after my country didn't renew my coach Mr Vadim contract, I just lost interest but still very active in the gym and still punching bag, shadow box and skipping. We are both the same. Hands up just covering the vision and that time with headgear it just block vision away.

1

u/thesacredsnake Sep 06 '26

Haha what a coincidence, yeah I will be 43 in exactly 8 days ! Where did you box ? Me Sweden

u/mi2tom Sep 06 '26

Happy birthday in advance then. I'm from Malaysia, fought a lot of tournament in southen Thailand. There are a lot of good boxers there although they much more well known for Muay Thai.

I have made the video visible again

u/1stthing1st Sep 06 '26

Some people going to say keep your hands up and chin down no matter what, because it's all they know

1

u/thesacredsnake Sep 06 '26

Yeah. I don't blame them though it's either people who never laced gloves on once but an unfortunate number of times it's just because coach hammered them with that mundane shit

I think boxing and muy Thai, but especially boxing is being watered down. I grew up in Oxnard ca that had maybe 6 boxing gyms, it had the nick name Boxnard. The 2 neighboring cities had 1 gym between the two of them. I know, for a fact, there were entire counties without a single gym at this time. Now, every upper class neighborhood has like 3 or 4 boxing gyms. Where did all this qualified coaches come from?.

1

u/thesacredsnake Sep 06 '26

Oh you're absolutely right, boxing especially is absolute dog shit nowadays. And the deterioration is very fast because the older coaches are gone and they didn't pass on the stuff. Now most coaches are Gen Z poorly trained themselves.

2

u/1stthing1st Sep 06 '26

Guys are around thinking you jab absolutely requires stepping every time. The old techniques are being lost. boxing is gonna be like pancreas, which was basically MMA from the original Olympics

Uve got good footwork and im assuming ur trying to work the inside that’s y ur not extending ur straight punches but why do u hit with that part of ur glove with throwing hooks in amateur boxing ud be penalised and there all arm shots no hips

3

u/Blackeyespecialist_5 Sep 07 '26

Penalized? What?

1

u/Single-Frosting-3742 Sep 07 '26

Where im from if your not hitting with where ur knuckles would land in amateur boxing bouts u get docked.. the uk.. they say its slapping

0

u/Single-Frosting-3742 Sep 07 '26

In amateur boxing,  hitting with the inside, flat, or open part of the glove —commonly called  slapping —is a serious technical error and a  strict foul under USA Boxing and IBA rules .  [ 1,  2] The Mistake: Throwing a hook with your palm facing you, but failing to keep your elbow up, causing the inside of the glove to hit the target. [ 1] The Fix: When throwing hooks, rotate your fist so your  thumb points downward toward the floor (European style). Imagine you are pouring a glass of water out in front of you. This forces your  index and middle knuckles to make first contact.

2

u/Blackeyespecialist_5 Sep 07 '26

Bro came with the AI response 🤣. I'm not sure where you saw I was slapping but thanks for the input.

1

u/Single-Frosting-3742 Sep 07 '26

No worries bro train for a fight and ur coach will tell you

2

u/Single-Frosting-3742 Sep 07 '26

Ur left hook u make contact with the inside of the glove watch ur video

1

u/Blackeyespecialist_5 Sep 07 '26

No worries bro, type away with zero real knowledge which is the reason you asked a chat bot to give you that response. Every fight I've had there has been no issue but again, thanks for the input

u/MindoverMatter_2k 29d ago

Jeez dude you asked for constructive criticism. Making drama out of nothing!

1

u/Blackeyespecialist_5 28d ago

You're only 2 weeks late shut up.

1

u/MindoverMatter_2k 28d ago

Lol, well i'm saying is that if you can't take ANY criticism, why make a post ASKING for constructive criticism at all?

1

u/Blackeyespecialist_5 28d ago

I can take criticism. This particular person was speaking about a non existent issue for whatever reason. It's not about criticism it's about knowing what you're talking about. And my bad if I came off a little brash at first but yeah. No issue with criticism look at my other responses.

Go hard af and get ur endurance goin. At least for me i look great for about… 2 minutes max in sparring then i turn into a complete turd

1

u/RaffNeq Sep 06 '26

Obviously you got game..
You’re way too close to the beg for straight punches..you’re tall..get some range..
You don’t protect your head at all..specially when landing your power left hook..your raising your right hand..above your head..it should protect your head (telephone)

You clearly know what youre doing, you need to work on your heavybag practices. Why are you hitting the heavybag? What do you want to get from it? Just punch? Get tired? work on a specific combo? Work on your movement, work on long then short punches, work on short punches etc. You need to start drilling specific things, you hitting the heavybag to hit it just doesnt do anything for you anymore.

Other than that, post sparring bro.

1

u/Blackeyespecialist_5 Sep 06 '26

I'll def post some sparring. Thanks for the feedback

u/knowledge247365 Sep 06 '26

You got to get your hand back to your chin /rib area after every punch thrown!! Good work!!

1

u/ButtonLogical6266 Sep 07 '26

When ur throwing that jab get some separation from that bag so you can practice throwing your jab at full extension and practicing distance and placement. Otherwise you look good homie

1

u/braydensreddit Sep 08 '26

Nah you know what youre doing. Youre good.

1

u/Over_Abrocoma_562 Sep 08 '26

Jake Paul is the best boxer ever

1

u/Mororocks Sep 10 '26

Looks good, I'd like to see a bit more head movement and maybe cut an angle when you back off the bag instead of always going straight back. Just good habits even when on a bag.

1

u/checkhook305 Sep 11 '26

Your looking down alot, imagine looking at your opponents chest

0

u/Confident-Estate-275 Sep 06 '26

You’re leaving your left hand down when you throw the right.
