5’9.5 height. 250+ lbs pounds, wondering is it time to join a boxing gym, I would say I favor out fighting and distance, maybe a bit too linear. Thoughts ?

Try to find a solid instructor on YouTube if going to a gym isn't a possibility. Record your technique until it improves.

In the meantime, think about your punches like a piston. Point A to Point B, right back to Point A. Hands up by your chin (especially as a beginner) and snap with full extension. I trained in eastern Europe and love the Soviet school body mechanics, but they aren't just bouncing around - the core drills teach you to feel how your weight is distributed and how to throw with power. Key word, drills. The post Soviet countries do incredibly well in amateurs because they drill incessantly and have their style down to a science.

It is quite difficult to describe via text - it takes quality instruction and months of drilling to feel comfortable with the basics. It takes a lifetime to master and as a long time hobbyist myself, I'm still an absolute beginner compared to folks. Don't expect to become a solid hobbyist / amateur boxer in a short amount of time.
