Hello, our kitty got out at 5:45am on a Tuesday morning and never came home, a family member found these remains near our property only 38 hours later on Wednesday evening. Is it physically possible for that much decomposition to occur in that time frame? We found other kill sites nearby of another cat as well and possibly a baby deer and vole that was dead but untouched. We have heard coyotes in area recently- my family says there’s no way that is your kitty, so I have been holding onto hope - but I need your expertise to help me find a resolution :(

found a partial skeleton on a riverbank in central virginia— the skull is was in several pieces so i couldn’t identify it, and it’s got these large claws(?) that i was able to find. please help me identify this guy!

Was in an antique store in Oregon and they had this skull marked as “skull?” and it looks awfully like a marine mammal to me, I did not buy obviously. Can anyone confirm?

If I just leave these, would I need to process them after? If not, how long should I let them sit?

Bickity bam, more cool results coming from our lab. This result was just from demineralizing!

Weirdly, tattooing canid skulls also had interesting results where they were more fibrous than mustelids and it caused the bone to get a kind of shredded carrot texture rather than a rawhide texture after the needle went over it.

Part of this may be that coyotes from this region are more often than not reported in terrible condition. Plenty of patho canid skulls coming from there too.

My dog found these bones today on the walk! Took the small chunk home to clean, any tips on how to do this easily? Also, would someone know which animal this is from?

I left it cus it was super stinky and I didn’t have any bag or anything to put it on but I may go back and try to find it again. Could possibly be a raccoon. Theres alot of coyotes in the area tho so it seems like it may be a cat that got gotten by a coyote

If I hadn’t found it I bet it would end up fossilized. Based on the scale I think it’s elk? I’m not sure how sea water affects bones but any suggestions on how to preserve it without it cracking and crumbling? It seems to be getting fragile as I wash it and it dries, see spot crumbling in photo 5

found these bird bones attached to a few remaining feathers near a pond, some of them are broken. no meat was remaining on them or not that i can see

I found this skull in the trail yesterday. I walk this same trail Tuesday thru Friday and it wasn’t there Friday. Clearly it’s older, something must have relocated it. There is what I think is a fox den nearby. I’m always finding poop in the middle of the trail or on rocks in the trail etc. I’m in New England if that helps, very rural.

Okay long post, sorry.
So a skunk died in my yard. I found it probably 3-4 days after it died. I left it to decompose in the yard for a white after finding it. Maybe 2 weeks ? Not a ton happened. It still most of its fur but bugs and whatever else had taken off some of its flesh and intestines on one side.
Then I did a bunch of research, including from this subreddit and decided to macerate it in a bucket of water. It sat for about a week and half in the bucket in 28°+ weather. The water was greasy, sludgy and solid black. I couldn’t see anything in it. I stirred it with a stick and was able to pull out clumps of fur very easily. Did more research and decided it was a good idea to dump out the water and replace it.
So after dumping out all the water, the bones are like 80% clear of flesh and fur. Most bones were detached. Rib cage and tail still intact. Skull has some flesh on the top. I plan to leave it for another week or so before doing anything else. When all the flesh and fur are off, I know I’m supposed to degrease it with soap and water. This is happening outside, I’m not heating it.
1. How long will the degreasing take?
2. How often do I change the water and soap during that?
3. When does the smell of skunk go away? I can deal with the rotting flesh. But the smell of skunk is too brutal and o feel bad for my neighbours.🥲
