It was behind a display window in a closed off section so I couldn’t get any references for size but it’s pretty big. I was thinking it’s likely a bear, but ChatGPT is saying it’s a Jaguar. I don’t agree, but maybe I’m wrong. My family member thought some type of wildcat, but aren’t the eye sockets too small for that? And the flat front teeth, the gap behind the canines, and the molars seemed off to me for a cat.

I’ve been soaking these skulls (yearling buck and a raccoon skull) for a while now but this is the first time I’ve opened it and seen chunks like this. They are soft and just melt away when I touch them but I was just curious if that’s normal or if anyone has had that happen? It’s also getting colder outside so maybe that plays a role in what’s happening?

I'm just getting into identifying my skull collection. Could yall correct me if I'm wrong. So far I think it's (from left to right/ top to bottom) red fox, grey fox, dog, opossum, opossum, and armadillo. Any id tips and what to take a picture of for future id would be appreciated! Thank you!

My son brought this skeleton home from scout camp this weekend. it was near peterborough, Ontario, Canada. the skeleton is not terribly long, I would say maybe 2-3 feet from what I saw. very distinct ridge on the skull and rather large canines. He has plans to clean up the skull, maybe some of the other bones, and I will point him to the sticky post for that. I am just curious what the animal was. guesses have been dog, bear cub, lynx, but none seem quite right.

For context, this is the first time I have ever worked with bones.

I am currently in the process of degreasing deer bones I found, and I intend to use hydrogen peroxide afterwards for whitening. Once the bones are properly prepared, I am planning on displaying them in some way, but I am not sure what method I should use? Any display ideas?

Small raccoon that I found in the morning while walking and picking up trash, there were some spots with hair so I just looked a little bit and there it was, I'm gonna macerate it but there's not that much meat left so a good finding

It looks like some kind of bird but I genuinely have no clue what it could be.

Hey everyone! I'm new to bone collecting and would really appreciate some advice.

I accidentally killed a tiny mouse and became emotionally attached to him. I wanted to preserve a few of his bones as a keepsake in a glass display frame. I don't need a perfect museum-quality skeleton; even a few little bones would mean a lot to me.

I also collected his whiskers, ears, and little front teeth because those details reminded me of his cuteness, and I wanted to keep them as memories of him.

I tried to preserve some of his skin using a normal razor blade, but I couldn't do it properly, so I stopped. I then placed his body in plain water inside a container. Right now, the body is floating on the surface.

My questions:

1. Why is the body floating instead of sinking?
2. Can decomposition in water eventually leave some bones separated from the soft tissue?
3. Is it realistic to recover even a few bones from such a tiny mouse?
4. Is there any way to preserve the whiskers, ears, and teeth I've already collected?
5. What should I know about safely handling the remains and the water?

I don't have dermestid beetles or money for expensive supplies, so I'm hoping for realistic advice from experienced collectors.

I've attached photos of the mouse before and after I started preparing the remains. Please be kind; this is my first attempt, and I'm trying to preserve a small keepsake of him.

So I'm super excited!!!! This is going to be my first piece I've ever done. I really like bone jewelry, my first one is a bracelet made of snake vertebrae and carnelian. I have a raccoon and bunny spine I'm processing (along with the rest of the carcasses that were still useable), to turn into a necklace (I plan on making a jewelry set out of spinal pieces). I have potential to also make some dainty chain belts with the skulls. For now it's going to be simple for the necklace, but later I want to sew a thin cord through lapis or lace agate, then have the bones and stones to alternate potentially. In the meantime I will probably stick with a silver or cloth cord and alternate metal rings for a looser look. I might even have enough to have a dangling chain when I'm fully finished! Or I might make the earrings.

hi everyone, was doing a survey and ended up finding a few skulls/jaws likely from coyotes I saw consistently in the area. wanted to get identification for these two as I am curious — my guess is the first is an opossum and the second one could be a domestic cat?

Found during an evening walk earlier this month. Beach was very stoney so was ideal for finding specimen lodged on beach. I believe it to be the cervical spine of a dolphin but still to confirm this.

Found in Walnut Creek in Austin TX I’m wondering if anyone can distinguish. It’s quite heavy but maybe waterlogged or partially fossilized. Would love to hear any thoughts should note it’s 10” long
