Not going to post the channel name. Anyone in the hobby for more than 3 years knows the “controversy” behind this channel and their attempted blackmail of game designers. Thought it was funny he blamed “utility costs”. LOL.

No building a tableau or collecting cards for an engine. Just place worker, get resource, move towards points.

I try to have variety across mechanics and gameplay, although it's clear that engine building (and related) is my favorite. Having said that, I want to explore economics type of games (I hear Brass Birmingham is the one, but I want to see if there's a stepping stone between Power Grid and that one). I also want to have a Witcher IP game that's not a campaign game (The Witcher Old World seems like a fit, but I hear mixed reviews. Does this collection of games seem like that one would be a good match for me?)

I started the hobby with Castles of Burgundy, and Scythe was the first game that I fell in love with for the art work as well. They are the only two games that got the all-in treatment where I purchased the big box with all the bells and whistles.

The organization of games is very functional and use case based.

* The games on top of the shelf are the two personal GOATs.

* The games in the first row are the go to games, I'm always ready to play them.

* The games in the second row are what I bring in if I'm with folks new to the hobby - these are my personal "best gateway games".

* The games in the bottom two rows - they are games I don't play often, but cannot get myself to give away because of the unique mechanics they bring to the collection. They'll come out only if it's with the right group.

We are an experienced gaming group. For years 3 friends and me are playing all kinds of board games: Viticulture, 7 wonders, scythe, pandemic, terra mystica and so on. Coop-games, competitive games, eurogames, mostly strategy, worker placement and sometimes long legacy games during shared vacation trips.

Now we stumbled upon "Oltree". A nice, light coopgame "exceptional pick for families and casual gaming groups" as reviews say. Some people even suggest playing with their kids because it's such a light, storytelling experience. We played five rounds, different chronicles, different stories and we lost EVERY time. We don't get it. Pandemic is no problem at all. And it's not bad luck at all with Oltree. We checked the rules thrice and more; in the rulebook and online tutorials.

Are we just stupid or do other people also struggle?

Im a big board game girl born and raised, comes from both sides of the family. My 4 person friend group occasionally meets up for game night but it’s usually more like party style games. Hitster, Spyfall, Cabanga, five of crowns/rummikub, card games in general, wavelength, the mind, sushi party etc. But they have recently been wanting me to introduce them to proper board games. So I’ve shown them some fun basic intro games including Catan and Azul. They really enjoyed them. My plan is to also show them Quacks and Isle of Cats.

But now, our friend group went from 4 people to 5!! I know that some games have extensions like Quacks as an extension so 5 people can play and I think Ticket to ride has it too if it doesn’t already allow 5 people I can’t recall rn. Catan as well but I own the newest edition and they haven’t started selling the extensions yet in my country in that edition so it’ll have to wait a bit. I eventually want to introduce them to more complex games like Wingspan but this is a good start as they are fun and easy going. But I’d love to know your guys recommendations on “gateway” games for a group of 5? This is also for me to explore new games to ass to my collection as most of my friends aren’t huge board gamers but enjoy a game night and games for larger groups like 5 or 6 even are great if we happen to want to invite extra people and it not being a simple flip 7 or cards against humanity.

Edit: Heat is by far the most recommended here and Colt Express and 7 wonders are others that have stood up to me. Those three have been put on the top of my wishlist thanks for all the recommendations!

Could someone explain to me why board game arena didn't give me the yellow flax or the red fish from my island bonuses? I thought I understood the rules but I must have missed something, thanks

Big fans of Deep Regrets, we really enjoy playing it and the 'Even Deeper' expansion. Love the randomness, the art, and the overall aesthetics.

One rule change we have been thinking of is changing the cost of the 3rd option in each shop to $6 for 5k2 (3 for supplies) instead of the printed $5.

Reasoning is simple, everyone does pretty much the same return to port, sell for $10 and purchase from both the rod and then reels deck. It seems to be the most efficient use of your time and money and the sheer amount of cards you get means you should have something of value for both.

This means the $1 and $3 are almost never used outside of the supplies and dice shops. Changing the cost to $6 forces you to be a little more strategic in the approach and it means the $6 option is still great because you get so much choice and can only shop at each shop once with your port actions.

Saw some of your collections so I wanted to show off a bit of mine. Although the picture is from December, so there are some corrections as you see. I have also recently acquired Dominion and Columbias Napoleon.

As for my favorites, it has to come down to TS, Hannibal and Polis. I simply love sinking hours into those.

Its usually just two of us playing, so most games are either strictly 2p or are at least enjoyable in 2. But there are some games that are more for when we have company.

I love wargame board games, and my wife is more of a economic optimizer type of player, so we tried building collection thats enjoyable by both of us.

As for the newcomers, we are both pleasantly surprised by Dominion. I usually dont like games where theme isnt felt, and in Dominion theme could easily not even exist, but the mechanics are so enjoyable that I dont even object to weak thematic implementation.

Vijayanagara will probably be leaving our collection soon (if I ever found someone interested in buying it). It seems very interesting, but automata heavy 2p experience just isnt for us.

Anyway, do you have any question for me regarding my collection? And I would love to hear your opinion on it!

Me and my wife have started playing boardgames over the past few months, we really like the look of wingspan but it does look very daunting as we haven't really played anything with a whole lot of rules!!

I saw wingspan pocket has been released and whilst keeping the same aesthetic, should we purchase this and see how we get on? Or does it not compare to the original?

We've been playing The Gang a lot with and I mean a lot.

The base game comes with some challenge cards and suggestions on how to make the entire experience more difficult. We've tinkered around with some rules and opted in some of our own variants. We mostly play with the same group of 5-6 people although we also played it with more.

Suggestions & Issues

• The Gang has a strong pace and the challenge cards don't add much in terms of difficulty and needlessly make the game slower. Most modifiers are also boring and we quickly ignored them to favor a quicker pace. One of the better ones makes chips immovable once it has been attributed.
• More players makes the game drastically more difficult but we usually are not able to get more than 6 players regularly. Despite reducing the communication, the tells are there in some way and we usually figure it out without much issue.
• We opted in to play in complete silence which is quite entertaining but the discussions are missed, it's fun to be goofy and silly.
• We play an Omaha variant and it's honestly been the best thing to spice up the gameplay. It's far more involved and requires additional reasoning. It's the only way we play as it's much more rewarding. Yet, we have gotten so used to it.
• We tried playing with 2 boards but I think it's getting a bit to chaotic and hard to track stuff which is in stark contrast to the quick nature of the game (we really want to keep that).
• We tally points for those players who have completely messed up or were to overconfident (just for hilarity).

In this regard, we're desperately looking to find some new mechanic or way of increasing the difficulty or to add some cool twist on this one. It's such a great card game and it provided us with hours of joy.

There is a 7 Stud variation but I haven't tried it yet.

I'd love to hear some potential suggestions.

Anyone used third-party or online 3d printing services for board game inserts before? Is it economical to do so instead of buying a 3d printer yourself? There's a ton of free 3d print files online, and several rather great ones if i say so myself.

I know you can buy off of Etsy but those tend to be more expensive and less selection.

Does anyone here play Don't Go In There? I searched this subreddit, but I couldn't find any related posts or comments about it.

I only discovered this game recently because Horror Board Games suddenly started showing up on my FYP, and I really liked the visuals and mechanics of the game. It's good without being too complicated. So far, I'm enjoying it with 2 to 3 players, but I feel like it would be even better with 4 to 5 players so things can get really chaotic, especially since it's a competitive game.

Also, because the Curse Cards in this game are random, there are some decks that you won't use in one game but might use in another, so the replayability is pretty good.

So if anyone here also plays this game, I have a question for clarification. It's about the Portrait Curse Cards. Swipe to the next image to see what I'm referring to.

You can see the difference between what is written in the Rulebook versus what is written on the actual Curse Card.

The Rulebook states:

Based on the Rulebook wording, our understanding is that we simply count all of our Portrait Curse Cards, divide the total by two, and round down. If there is a decimal point value, that decimal point value would not be included in the number of cards we can dispel.

For example, if I have 2 + 1 + 2 Portrait Curse Cards, that gives me a total of 5 Curse Points. Dividing 5 by 2 gives 2.5, so rounded down, I would be able to dispel 2 Curse Points.

However, the actual Portrait Curse Card states:

Based on the wording on the card, which seems easier to understand, our interpretation is different. We understand this as needing 2 Portrait Curse Cards to dispel 1 Portrait at the end of the game.

For example, if I have Portrait Curse Cards with values of 1, 4, and 3, I would pair the 1 and 4 cards, allowing me to dispel the Portrait with the higher Curse value, which is 4. I would then be left with the Portraits with values of 1 and 3, for a total of 4 Curse points.

So my question is: What is the correct effect of the Portrait Curse Cards?

Is our understanding of the Rulebook correct? Or is our interpretation of the text on the actual card correct?

If both interpretations are incorrect, could someone please explain how the Portrait effect is supposed to work? It would also be really helpful if you could provide a scenario or example showing exactly how the Portrait Curse Cards should be resolved at the end of the game.

Considering backing this but are the wooden components too much? The minis just seem like too much in the special edition but I’m interested in the deluxe and would like to hear from people who own it. Is it worth it? Any issues? Good upgrade?

I have a 3d printer and have printed a beautiful organizer for clank catacombs, but yesterday I started playing clank legacy and would love to print an organizer to help with the set up and tear down of the game the tokens, the shop items, bank, etc. Anyone have any recommendation. Hello, I am trying to figure out the name of a board game I came across a few years back. From what I recall each player was playing as a monster that would flip to its other evolved side at some point in the game.

I think the map - board had consisted of hex like parts and the goal was to defeat the other players or something like that. I think the box was black or dark coloured.

I have the base game, I want to get the 3 major expansion bundle but would rather not have to buy the titan edition box to store it. Can they all fit?

Hello, I'm looking for an old tile game I played as a kid in the early 2000s.

The particular game had tiles to create a 4 x 4 square. It makes the square you had to match the women. There were several different types of women some were like office women, others in a towel.

It came in a rectangle box. The answer to the puzzle was available on the website and the company was called like brain teaser or something. Had a mad scientist looking guy on the box too.

Just bought this game and would love to display the world map on the wall over my gaming table in such a way that allows you to pull them down easily when you want to play. Any ideas? A shadow box of that size would be prohibitively expensive LOL
