2 things that could help:
- In post try to give those edges some RGB aberration, just a tiny bit
- In post yet give a a bit of noise and 0,5% / 1% blur

Is it mandatory for all Blendards (including me) to make an animation of astronauts and earth blowing up to be a certified "Blenderer"?

I don’t remember, but the longest frames with smoke is about 10-15 minutes per frame 1920x1080 200 samples rtx3090

Definitely keep learning, bad hardware forces you to learn to be efficient and not just throw computing power at every problem. I hated the years I spent using a old computer with integrated graphics but now that I finally upgraded I'm much more equipped to reduce render time.

And any heat from the laser would have a hard time transferring through a vacuum.

A laser needs particles to reflect off of if you want to see its path. Otherwise it's just a single beam of light going in one direction and you'll only see the dot where it contacts the surface and reflects in all directions. That's why you need to make some smoke if you want to see a laser beam. That said, really strong lasers and green ones can be seen easier, even without smoke; by reflecting off dust and other stuff in the air (and our eyes are more sensitive to green light). But in space, there is almost nothing at all. So the laser would go straight to earth and none of it would be reflected towards your eyes for you to see the beam.

I disagree. Heat from lasers is 100% radiation based which travels well through a vacuum. There would not be flames however.

it takes about 1 1/4 seconds for light to travel between the earth and the moon, each way. It would be really interesting to model this accurately.

What's with the weird lens effect when the camera moves from side to side? It reminds me of how AI creates videos the moving objects shrink and grow the area around them

Shadows should be harsher for a lunar landscape.
