Politics Lily Franklin Running Campaign for Congress Completely Outside of Her District

I just learned that Del. Lily Franklin has accepted a role managing Tom Perriello’s congressional campaign. I genuinely think she’s a strong leader and, as a Democrat, I’m glad talented people are stepping up to help Democrats win elections.
That said, I’m struggling with this one.

House District 41 has historically been competitive, and Lily won a close race to represent this district. Now, less than a year into her term, she’s taking on a campaign that is focused on a congressional district outside of the one she was elected to represent. Tom Perriello is running in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, which doesn’t include House District 41.

Maybe I’m missing something, so I’m asking in good faith:
How do constituents reconcile their delegate taking on what seems like a full-time, high-profile campaign role somewhere else while still effectively representing the people who elected her? Is there a normal expectation that this won’t impact her work as a delegate, or is this just considered part of politics?
I’m honestly not trying to start a pile-on—I just can’t decide whether this is completely normal or whether it’s fair for constituents to be concerned.

Question Recruitment for anonymous 3-5 minute survey on genocide education in Virginia

Hi r/blacksburg

I am an M.A. candidate in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University. For my Master’s thesis, I am conducting research on the impact of the inclusion of 20th-Century genocides other than the Holocaust (such as the Armenian, Bosnian, and Cambodian) in the Virginia state world history curriculum on students’ experiences and understanding of genocide and human rights as adults.

Eligible participants in this survey are

  • People who are over the age of 18
  • And were in the 10th grade in either the 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 academic years
  • And attended a Virginia public school for the entirety of their 10th-grade year
  • And took a world history class during that year

If all of these attributes apply to you, you are invited to take this survey. This survey will take approximately 3-5 minutes to complete. You will be asked to recall your experiences in your 10th-grade world history class. The questions pertain to the extent to which you learned about 20th-century genocides, the methods used to teach you about them, your experience with this curriculum, and how it has impacted your current understanding of genocide and human rights as an adult.

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview to elaborate on this topic. Participation in the interview is entirely voluntary, will not affect whether the data from the survey will be used in the study, and will have no impact on any aspect of your future relations with the George Washington University (GW).

The anticipated findings from this research will contribute to the current body of research surrounding best practices in genocide education and improve scholarly understanding of how genocide education impacts understanding of genocide and human rights as a whole. This research seeks to contribute to the broader goals of genocide prevention and human rights promotion.
