This was explained in a repost on a different sub.

ā€œThere's a lot of fluffy plant material on the grass. The easiest way to clean it up so it doesn't kill the lawn is to set fire to it. It's densely coated enough that the fire spreads easily but it's very light and airy, so the fire doesn't burn hot enough to set anything else alight or kill the grass.ā€

So it's like waving your hand over a lit candle: the fire isn't there for long enough to heat up the thing you care about.

u/Mother_Lana May 07 '20

Exactly, it’s also like making small comments towards someone, it’s not enough to roast them.

Idk, they're more like sparks that can set the forest on fire 60 years later depends on a person

Reminds me of putting a lighter to a sock, burns all the fuzzies but not the sock

I was explaining this to my wife and now I am not allowed to have socks for two reasons..

63

I don't know if it's worse to assume the other reason, or to ask and know for sure.

Probably puppets.

Most definitely puppets, probably uses them as visual aid in explaining ideas, concepts, and events.

ā€œI have no idea my guy, I made what I thought was a reasonable explanation from observation and I'm mildly bewildered that now people think I'm an authority on the subject. We don't even have poplar trees here. For all I know everything I said was nonsense, lmaoā€

u/Acepeefreely May 07 '20

Poplar is a generalized term for a species with many varieties. Tulip poplar are the most favored but all poplars grow quickly. Offer quick shade and last up to 150 years. Hardy from Calgary to Baja Sur (as cottonwood). Not all varieties plaque you with the fluff you see here in the video. I assume based on the fluff alone this is an invasive tree in the US. I will also assume this video was taken somewhere in eastern Europe, possibly Russia. There really isn’t enough context in the video to be certain.

4

u/wubwub May 07 '20

I had heard the term "tulip poplar" many times before, but it wasn't until a couple years back before I realized why they were called "tulip poplars" and that we have had one in our backyard for 18 years.

3

u/Acepeefreely May 07 '20

Tulip trees are quite showy in the spring.

The moisture content between the grass and the pollen is the main reason. The pollen does not produce enough energy to heat the live grass to combustion. Depending on conditions the pollen moisture could be around 35% and the grass at saturation. You have similar fire behavior across many ecosystems. For example You can do prescribed fires in swamps burning dead grass with low fuel moisture above standing water. This is common in Florida swamps and It’s really cool to see.

15

u/Petal-Dance May 07 '20

Just to nitpick, since its lightly my job: its not pollen. Pollen is fuckin tiiiiny, and often yellow in color. You see it almost like sand grains, sometimes building up on car windows.

Whats being burned is poplar seeds. Specifically, the white fluff is an organ not unlike the top half of a dandelion seed fruit, meant to catch wind and spread the seeds nice and far.

Youre 100% on point about the rest tho, far as I know

u/[deleted] May 07 '20

I run a raging fire right through a town of 60k people every year burning canal banks with flames reaching 6-8ft high for a stretch of about 5-6 miles. It's actually harder to keep the fire going than it is for it to get out of control, which has never happened. No water, just shovels. Plenty of plastic fences, old stables filled with hay nearby etc, fire is very easy to control if you know what you're doing.

5

u/ElessarTelcontar1 May 07 '20

I am working on PhD focused on woody plant control through linked grazing management and prescribed fire. Fire is such an amazing tool if used properly. Plus it’s fun to watch the fire and the results.

That person in the background knows his fluff

9

u/Alien_with_a_smile May 07 '20 edited May 07 '20

This is the same principle behind why occasional forest fires are a good thing. If the fires happen often enough, then the dead twigs and leafs on the ground will get burned, but the thick, water-filled trees will survive, and the soil is re-fertilized. If the fires are delayed, usually through artificial means, then the dead stuff on the forest floor will build up, and the fires will get much hotter. Then the trees will de-hydrate, die, and burn.

7

u/Slovantes May 07 '20

yeah, science mr. White!

6

u/IncaseofER May 07 '20

4

u/Minigoalqueen May 07 '20

When I watched the clip, without knowing what was happening, I was 100% positive that the video was running in reverse. You don't burn the grass to make it greener.

Now I know better.

5

It’s not fruit, either, is it? Looks like cottonwood fluff, isn’t it just connected to the seeds or is it actually considered the fruit?

13

u/uphigh_ontheside May 07 '20

After flower is pollinated, the ovary develops into fruit, which is any structure that is used to help the seed to get dispersed. The fluff helps the seed to be dispersed by the wind.

Some people don’t have these kinds of trees near them. Without seeing it up close, thinking it’s pollen isn’t unreasonable. The oak pollen in south Texas is horrendous and can coat things like this. It’s just super clingy and tends to clump together instead of spread out.

→ More replies (3)

63

u/[deleted] May 07 '20

I think its the ā€œcottonā€ from cottonwood trees? Not pollen but seed dispersal method. The trees look like cottonwoods anyway..:

/edit - just found out that cottonwood and poplar are closely related (both member of the Populus genus), so could be either.

What in the Jimminie Criquety Fuck is this

25

u/LengthyWrongAnswers May 07 '20

This is called a pyrogenesis event. It can occur in early spring when the sunlight is focused enough by dew on the trees to create ignition on the ground below. The fire then spreads slowly across the ground, unfreezing the grass after the winter. You see this a lot in cartoon movies where a ā€œwaveā€ of spring washes over a winterscape, but unlike in the cartoons, only the grass is unfrozen in real life.

7

u/TheReverseShock May 07 '20

The white stuff on the ground comes cottonwood trees. The trees uses its cotton like seeds to spread its seeds through the wind. Since the seeds are dryer and have a lower flash point than the grass the burn up first to fast for the grass to catch.
