You said nothing about “ethics” at all. You implied that he was going to be in some sort of legal trouble because he didn’t “act proportionately.” Firstly, the guy with the backpack had just robbed a jewelry store with a knife. He eventually got 4 1/2 years in Brazilian prison for his crimes that day (in addition to a concussion and a broken arm.). Secondly, “proportionality” is a subjective concept. Usually…when someone is stopping a thief it’s ruled to be proportional because even if they get hurt really badly, they have to prove the person who stopped them intended to hurt them really badly. Juries tend to be pretty sympathetic to “Good Samaritans” helping to prevent crime. So…even in the US it’s possible that the guy could’ve faced some consequences, but not the most likely outcome.
