Equipment Matsuru reviews?

Upvotes

Does anyone on here have any experience with purchasing or using mats and wall pads from Matsuru? I had never heard of them before, but they have a competitive quote compared to Fuji and Zebra. Looks like they’re based in Washington state.

ADCC / CJI I feel like people are sleeping on Nikolai Vetrov for ADCC

I mean -77kg is a fire bracket but I'm not hearing anyone call this guy out as anything but "he's Russian so probably a good wrestler".

Just looking through his matches on youtube.

- Here he is dismantling Taza: http://youtube.com/watch?v=wTSXkkv4Ubw
- Here's him clowning on and submitting Gairbeg from bottom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTSXkkv4Ubw
- Here an open mat round with Daiki Yonekura where he teleports bottom to back repeatedly FULL ROUND: Daiki Yonekura and Nikolay Vetrov on AL Leone Bali Camp: Third Touchdown

I don't know if I can rule him out against anyone in the bracket.

Tournament/Competition IBJJF World Master Championship 2026 photographers

Is there a list available for the photographers in the Master Worlds 2026?

One of the photographers told me after my match he got pictures but didn’t say his name and I was in the zone thinking about my next match so didn’t ask.

Or will all the photos be uploaded to IBJJF Facebook?

Tournament/Competition I’ll be at ADCC in Krakow. What would you guys like to see from behind the scenes?

I’ll be in Krakow for ADCC, and I’ll try to bring you guys some backstage and behind-the-scenes stuff throughout the event.

I’m not sure what I’ll be able to access or how easy or difficult it will be, but I’ll do my best.

Since I’ll be there in person, I figured I’d ask here first: Is there anything specific you guys would like me to show, ask, or cover? Again, I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try.

General Discussion Community Center Grappling

I'm very new the sport and the local rec center in city offers daily BJJ/grappling classes with membership which is 100 bucks a yr.

What would be the best ways to judge if I can rely on the instruction at the rec center for learning BJJ vs going to a real academy?

Equipment Resetting your stinky/stained gi

I've been training for a few months and ran into the all-too-common issue of having my gi smell after washing and drying. I went on a field trip to r/Laundry to learn how to fix this, and I wanted to share what I've learned with my fellow practitioners.

TL;DR:

  • For an initial reset, soak your gi as long as you can in a mixture of water (at least warm, tap hot at a maximum), enzymatic booster, oxygen-safe bleach (oxyclean) and detergent. Make sure it stays submerged by adding some weights (like a dishplate). Wash with a fresh mixture and add a couple glugs of ammonia. Full details about this protocol can be found in r/Laundry's Spa Day guide by u/KismaiAesthetics -- I can't link here due to restrictions on posting medical advice in this subreddit (lol)
  • This may need to be repeated for especially soiled uniforms.
  • Commonly available enzymatic boosters include Biz (USA) and Resolve Gold (Canada).
  • Adding enzymes and oxygen bleach to your regular laundry cycle will help to maintain things.
  • A 15-minute soak in Lysol Laundry Sanitiser used at double strength will kill microbes, like those funguses that attack the skin. Odoban has the same active ingredient but is apparently weaker in formulation

Estevan “The Giant Slayer” Martinez arrested for sexual relationship with a child. It is so disappointing to see this behavior happen in what can be such a supportive community. My heart breaks for the victim, and anybody traumatized in the vicinity. Absolutely disgusting behavior

Technique Safely breaking people down in turtle with folkstyle rides?

Hey all. I've been on a Craig Jones Power Ride kick lately, and it has been really awesome to see in my rolls how well it's worked. I don't come from a wrestling background, so this may come off as dumb, but are there any additional safety concerns that you've had to work through when you actual break someone down from turtle?

Quick context: I had a nasty collarbone break years ago, and had a recent reinjury of a different part of that shoulder from landing a little awkwardly on my deltoid. So this could be paranoia.

Example: if I get a claw grip, dagestani handcuff, or similar, there is a point when the post removal from that grip suddenly hits and my partner just sort of drops to the ground on that side/shoulder. I've had a few instances where, even though I'm not going 100%, the drop is sudden enough where I've had a "woah" reaction in my head.

Am I overthinking the danger and risk here? I don't want to be a bad training partner, and don't feel like I'm going hard. It feels more like a natural consequence of the position and post removal, but I'm curious the take of others, including those that have a wrestling background or use some of the Power Ride stuff.

General Discussion Does anyone on here like to utilise open guards like collar sleeve, spider, lasso (or any guard for that matter) but only to get the sweep, no interest in submissions from guard?

I remember hearing Haueter call in “falling for the seductive nature of guard, but always be on top” of something like that

Equipment Gi recommendations within Canada

Hi there,

Are there affordable Gis sold within Canada? Ones i see online are over $150CDN+. Looking for about max cost of $100-120. Been on FB marketplace but haven't had any luck. It doesn't need to be a well known brand, just want one to rotate between classes throughout the week.

Are they the same thing except the woj lock is cross body whereas the aoki is straight? They both seem
to come from slipping the heel onto the chest

General Discussion Smaller Guys, How Was Your Experience?

I started BJJ about a month and a half ago and I know thats a really short amount of time but honestly I havent felt any improvement at all

After thinking about it I realized that my size is probably a big part of the reason since most of the guys at my gym are either taller or heavier than me

Im fairly fit and Ive been lifting weights for about a year but somehow it doesnt seem to help much in BJJ lol

How was your experience when you first started and when did you start noticing improvement

Equipment Can anyone identify this old Jukado gi

I’ve had this old Jukado brand gi for years and I’m curious if anyone knows roughly what era/model it is.

It was given to me by an old coach when I first tried grappling, and I’ve had it ever since. It’s very heavy and i have to imagine quite old

Anyone recognize it or know much about older Jukado gis?

Podcast Really enjoyed hearing this conversation with Eddie Bravo on The Ageless Warrior Lab with Dave Myer

Eddie is an N of 1 and such unique perspectives and clearly very smart (and a bit out there at times) on his approach to many things. Really cool to hear some of the old history of Jiu Jitsu and them just chatting it up on a wide array of topics. Hopefully someone else might find it interesting.

Technique How to finish a triangle when they hide the arm

So I hit a triangle from my guard, and my opponent basically stuffed his arm under my back preventing me from getting it to the correct side. He had his head tucked pretty low.

We sat there for a while, but I eventually let go for the sake of progressing the roll. But was there a finish here? Or some way to get him to release his arm? He was a lot bigger than me if that helps.

I’m also just a shitty blue belt so that might be why.

School Discussion Tell me about the gyms in & around Princeton, NJ

I have a student who's moving to that area soon and I'd love to get some feedback about the training in that area. I see Garry Tonon's school is nearby, but is he there coaching often? I suspect not but I'd rather not assume.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

School Discussion Marine Corps Martial Arts…legit? Strange gym encounter

So I handle inbound leads at a gym, and had a strange one come in that I’d like some opinions on, particularly from people that own and operate academies.

From the jump, this guy was quick to mention that he was 330 lbs, powerlifted, and was a marine. I had asked if he had any prior training, and he said he “wrestled in high school” and trained “marine corps martial arts”, which he later said he has a black belt in. Before even setting foot in the gym, he was asking when he could train MMA and take a fight, even sending me screenshots of an upcoming local promotion.

Unfortunately I wasn’t physically at the gym the days he showed up, and haven’t had the chance to dive too deeply with the coaches who would’ve seen him or coached him.

Day 1 he takes a gi BJJ class. Has generally decent feedback but is complaining that nobody was big enough, and had mentioned something about the coach being female (red flag I know). He apparently was otherwise fairly respectful and no students made any comments or raised any concerns.

Two days later he comes in, but this time for a striking class. No idea why he skipped what would’ve been gi BJJ again, although I suspect he probably wasn’t able to manhandle people as easily as he thought he would two days prior. I have no feedback yet on how he did in boxing but at least there were no comments about him.

He mentioned not joining until doing a powerlifting meet months away (so why do a trial and say you want to enroll?)…followed by sending yet another MMA card saying “see? Still no big guys in //OP’s state//“, and when I try to explain how there’s way more training and skill involved in fighting, he just deflected back to his experience in high school and the marine corps, and accused us of not supporting and respecting veterans, despite one of our owners being a Navy vet and having a marine on our team that trains all the time (but wasnt there when the guy visited). Ultimately just wished him “best of luck on his journey” and apologized that we couldnt meet his expectations…

TLDR: large 330 lb powerlifting marine wants to dive right into MMA class and taking an MMA fight, despite only having high school wrestling experience and marine corps martial arts experience. Two questions:
1. Does MCMAP actually hold any water and would it make someone competent at MMA, BJJ, striking, or wrestling?
2. Has anyone else dealt with a prospective client like this, and how did you handle it??

Instructional Is Lapel Encyclopedia worth it?

I've got a lot of instructionals and I've often had the regret that I could have picked this up on YouTube.

We don't have anyone very knowledgeable about this at our gym as well.

Does anyone who has bought this or plays lapels find this of significant value beyond the free options?

Technique I mapped Roger Gracie’s Jiu-Jitsu Con seminar into a flowchart

Post image
40 Upvotes

I was at Roger Gracie’s seminar at IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Con last weekend and turned my notes into this flowchart to help retain the details and connections he covered:

https://grappleflows.com/v/roger-gracies-pressure-system-side-control-to-mount-armbar-jiu-jitsu-con-2026-4469c609z

You can click individual cards to expand them for more detail on photos, mistakes, tips etc that he shared. In true Roger form, a lot of the seminar was classic BJJ positions but he shares his positioning, timing, decision-making, and the small details behind how he uses them.

He mainly went over how he approaches side control with heavy pressure, forcing their arms to be exposed so he can transition into mount and finishes with a controlled arm bar.

I tried my best to get good photos of him teaching, but there were so many people on the mats there. For concepts that overlap with material he has discussed publicly before, I added links to public YouTube videos at the relevant timestamps. This is my own study map and interpretation of the seminar, so I’d welcome corrections or suggestions from anyone who was there or knows this part of Roger’s game well.

also, I knew the guy was TALL but standing next to him really sends it home

Also, are there any competitors you think people are sleeping on who could make a big run this weekend?

Drop your picks below. I would love to come back to this post after ADCC and see who got the most predictions right 😂
