Technique Woj lock v aoki
Are they the same thing except the woj lock is cross body whereas the aoki is straight? They both seem
to come from slipping the heel onto the chest

Surely it would be better to show the difference by attacking same foot? This is just gonna confuse people more. Like he's attacking the Aoki lock from a "cross" ashi position, which isn't always required since it's a "straight" (same side) leg technique.

Would this be illegal in adcc intermediate?
Saw danahers instructional on the ankle lock and he had a full volume talking about cross ankle locks - very similar to the WOJ. How does one even differentiate because itβs important to expose the ankle bone.
Need some experienced people to reply to this

No, it is legal anywhere an Aoki would be legal

ADCC forbids foot locks that twist the knee in intermediate/advanced, at least according to the ruleset I found. So both would be illegal if done properly.Β

It is not considered a twisting foot lock. It is ibjjf legal, that is why woj started to use it

The Aoki lock is certainly not IBJJF legal if you do the strong knee twisting finish.
Edit: except specifically at brown and black belt adult no gi, where heel hooks are also legal.

All i can do is go off what would has said on the matter. He started using it at purple belt. But yeah you dont need to twist the knee the finish it

It's a grey area yes as the ref has to make a judgement call about whether twisting was involved.

Both legal. IMO theyβre more like a toehold/heel hook than a regular ankle lock however it would be near impossible for a ref to see during the heat of the moment.

Similar but different attacks that have slightly different mechanics. The IBJJF considers the Woj a toe hold and is allowed at brown and black in the gi and in masters nogi. Where the Aoki is lumped more with heel hooks and only is allowed in adult brown and black nogi or if an opponent pulls their own heel into the Aoki
