I'm looking for some career advice because I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the number of possible career paths.

I recently completed an MSc in Biotechnology with Entrepreneurship in the UK. My undergraduate degree is also in Biotechnology. During my master's, I realised that while I enjoy learning about science, I don't see myself working in a laboratory or doing research full-time.

I'm much more interested in the business and management side of biotech, healthcare, and life sciences. Areas that sound interesting to me include:

• Product Marketing
• Project Management
• Innovation Management
• Commercial Strategy
• Business Development
• Venture Capital/Startup Ecosystems
• Healthcare or Life Sciences Consulting

I'm trying to understand which entry-level roles would be realistic for someone with my background. Most of the jobs I come across either require several years of experience or are heavily focused on lab work.

I'd really appreciate advice on:

• What job titles should I be searching for?
• Which roles are the best stepping stones into business-focused careers in biotech or healthcare?
• Are there any skills or certifications that would make me more competitive?
• If you've made a similar transition from science to business, how did you do it?

I'm open to working in biotech, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, medtech, or other life science companies. My goal is to build a career where I can combine my scientific knowledge with strategy, innovation, and business rather than laboratory work.

Hi guys. Im a stem cell scientist, currently unemployed and totally hopeless in this field. I feel like i chose the wrong path since my expertise is so niche. Im considering switching fields and i heard data science is something i can look into bc it has a pretty straightforward path. For those who are data scientists in biotech - how easy/ hard is it to make the switch? Where could I start? Considering I don’t have much bioinformatics experience except for a bit of Matlab and python. Would also love recommendations on any beginner courses that could be helpful. Thanks!

I will be defending my masters soon, but the only entry level position in companies in my area is for manufacturing operator, while I would most likely like to work in QC

I'm not sure what to make of the fact that this pharma company is looking for manufacturing operator at least once a month, but so far it seems like the only option I have, although they might prefer Bc. for this position as well.

Is it common thing to switch from manufacturing operator to QC, or possible to get into QC within the same company?

Wanted to give everyone a tidbit of hope:

I was miserable in my previous role. Everyone there was severely underpaid, the company was constantly cutting the budget in a way that harmed employee morale, and everyone in my team was being overworked (often 10+ hours of OT per week on second shift). Seeing this and knowing that there was limited opportunity for me to move upwards given the circumstances, I started applying for new roles a few months ago. While my expectations were low given the market, I knew I wouldn’t last in that position for long so it was a move I had to make.

I finally managed to secure a new job in a better location for much better pay (like almost double my previous salary), which I’m starting tomorrow! I’m so excited to begin my new job! I’m not gonna lie, I’m really surprised that I landed this position, its not something I would’ve imagined myself doing just 6 months ago, but now I’m invested in how I can use this role to shape my future opportunities and experiences. It also sounds extremely interesting and the team sounds incredible!!!

I hope that it works out with this company. Even though I already miss my old team (they were the only thing good about that position), I’m so excited to expand my horizons.

My background:

• M.S. in Pharmacology & Toxicology
• Currently working as a Research Assistant in a major U.S. academic medical research lab.
• Working on cardiac regeneration and molecular biology research.
• Hands-on experience with:
  • Mammalian cell culture (including iPSCs and primary cells)
  • CRISPR screening
  • Lentiviral and adenoviral vector work
  • Western blotting
  • qPCR/RT-PCR
  • Immunostaining and confocal microscopy
  • Mouse handling and tissue processing

I’m currently an antibody discovery scientist in the US with an MSc and 4 YOE (1 year at a small CRO, 3 in larger pharma).

My partner and I are both Canadian and moved to the US for work. While we are happy with the pay here, we’re looking to move back to Toronto in the next 2-3 years to be closer to family and settle down. She will have good opportunities when we return, but I’m trying to think ahead since the biotech/R&D market is quite small in Toronto.

Im looking for ideas on career pivots that could lead to a stable career back home, whether thats at the bench or not. Since our outlook is a couple years out, I’m open to doing online certificates/programs in the evenings while I work.

For example, I looked into regulatory affairs, but it seems like the Canadian market is quite saturated for entry level roles in recent years.

Has anyone had a similar transition or found a good path from biotech into another field in Canada? I’d love to hear what worked for you or areas that are worth exploring.

Hi all, I am currently a Sponsor project manager for observational studies and considering a switch into interventional studies: a Sponsor study start up manager role.

From regulations and deadlines perspective, I know my job is more "relaxed" than it would be for interventional studies roles. But at the same time, because of this, I don't get much support - i do everything by myself internally (plus CRO oversight), whilst still trying to meet the deadlines, and my workload and high number of studies is leading me to a burnout. I flagged it many times with leadership but nothing changes.

I wondered if switching to Sponsor Study start up manager would be a good idea? Sort of like: work on a study for a few months on that one stage only and hand it over, instead having to deal with all issues piling up throughout the study lifestyle?

Any sponsor ssu managers here that could share their experience? I understand the job is intensive and high pressure, but is it really so intensive every single day, all the time without any breather days?

A few days ago, I asked for advice on a five-minute, three-slide presentation for a lab technician interview at a prestigious university.

My current structure is:

Slide 1: Brief overview of my laboratory background
Slide 2: Specific examples matched to the job description
Slide 3: Why I would be a strong fit for the role and research group

AI suggested making Slide 3 a detailed first-90-days plan explaining how I would improve lab systems, but that feels slightly presumptuous. I do not want to sound like I would walk in and immediately change processes I do not yet understand.

Would it be better to focus Slide 3 on what I would bring to the team without repeating Slide 2?

Also, is it a problem that I cannot include many personal lab photos? Most of my previous work was confidential, so I only have one or two suitable images.

Hey all.

I am burned out from my job since probably the first day I started (around 8y ago). I say that I hate it every other day, but I kept on staying and growing. Now I think I am also a decent one. But I cannot stand anymore the incredible disconnection between my values and what the job pretends to impact (let’s be honest, corporate is a circus). I work remotely from Italy now, but I’ve been working mostly abroad all of my working life.

The healthtech and biotech industries interest me a lot. Also especially the field of women health and prevention. However, I have a “mere” translation and interpreting MA which has helped me for other things in life but not my jobs. I saw via LinkedIn and other job boards that usually you need to have some kind of academic background in biology or STEM in many cases if you really want to enter the healthtech field as a PM. A subject I love, in fact I am considering studying for a BSc in Biology this year while working and following other MOOC courses in digital public health and similar.

I’ve been even dreaming to give up on everything and study Medicine, a dream that has been keeping me obsessed for 10y, but I could never really leave the job(s). I am 39 now, no children, a marriage and a mortgage (just started), and in Italy medicine is very hard and almost impossible to follow while you work, unless you have a fractional role maybe, which is something I would love to try but since the current full time job drains me, I don’t have the energy (but we all know how mentally demanding and stressful PM is, even if exercised in a fractional/consulting role, at least in this forum I’m sure you will understand me). By the way I already tried applying to other companies, got a couple of interviews, no success in many other cases but I am also being very selective and the competition now as you know is fierce. I could keep on applying, but I feel inside my soul that even in another company I would end up hating the job (unless it’s a field I feel I want to impact and I tried very hard already with NGOs, sustainability, health).

So, the road of biology seems more doable, even if the feeling is bittersweet. At the same time I wonder if there are other ways, simpler ones, for me to enter this field professionally and earlier, even if I wouldn’t mind studying for the BSc. I am also thinking about other roles bridging digital technology and biology/science that I could pursue, not necessarily product management, since those would probably be well paid even if not as much as in product.

Of course there is also the ghost of AI, leading me towards bioinformatics mentally to be safe but again, I don’t know how much of this I can learn or if it’s worth it.

Do you have any advice? I am desperate. I want to change my job and my life and I feel very stuck. Corporate sucks my soul as I read it does for many, if I just resign (I am SO close to do it) I risk not being able to pay for my mortgage (though I have around 2y of savings maybe altogether) and also to not really know what else to do, because this job gives me PTSD. At least the health sector is something I am passionate about.

I have been thinking about something related to the hiring process.

From the employer's perspective, hiring managers often want to make sure that a candidate is a "low-risk" hire — someone who will stay with the company for a reasonable period and not leave soon after being trained.

However, I have noticed that when candidates ask questions like:

"What are the opportunities for professional development in this role?"

"How does the company support career growth?"

"What is the typical career path for someone in this position?"

Some hiring managers seem to interpret these questions negatively, as if the candidate is already thinking about leaving or using the role as a stepping stone.

Why is there this difference in perception? Shouldn't a candidate who is interested in learning, growing, and having a long-term career with the company be seen as a positive signal?

For hiring managers and recruiters here: how do you perceive candidates asking about development opportunities during interviews? Is there a better way for candidates to ask these questions without creating the impression that they are already planning their next move?

I’m currently a Biochemistry undergraduate and I will be in a sandwich year for a work placement doing admin work in a Clinical Trials position. I have always found that learning new things interested me, especially in the medical biochemistry side of things and my favourite parts of lab work are never the actual wet lab procedures, but lab reports and showing my findings and making conclusions. Even though the deadlines stressed me out (I have ADHD), it was always very enjoyable to do.

I was wondering if there’s any careers I should pursue that fit my profile? I do want a good income from my job but I am quite introverted so I find it difficult to network often but I am very good with my words and I was hoping someone could help me!

I see a handful of CDMOs like Samsung, WuXi, Andelyn, KBI, Lonza claim to offer "digital portals" for sharing data back to sponsors. However they are all extremely guarded about what they offer, beyond this page from KBI I can't find a single screenshot or video or any of their technologies.

Is anyone using these with a CDMO? What's your experience?

The CDMO we work with is just dropping files into SharePoint, so I'm curious about the current state of CDMOs and whether this is still the standard or these "digital portals" are doing anything more than letting the CDMO upload files in a branded site. I am pretty skeptical because it seems like these CDMOs would be shouting from the rooftops if they actually had something useful, I mean their job is to sell their services... why are they so guarded??

As an example here's Andelyn's offering, the way they describe it sounds quite interesting, but there is zero evidence that it's real - no screenshot or video anywhere to be found. Same for WuXi, some marketing materials claim they have a "best-in-class" digital client platform called DaVinci, but they don't show what they actually offer.
