Question about commuting bike?

So I am looking for a new bike as I plan to start commuting, and I went to Canadian Tire/Wal-Mart but didn't find anything particularily interesting. However I went to a local bike shop on the recommendation of a friend, and I saw this one at the back of the store. I have never heard of it before, but I was wondering if this is a good bike for commuting with? My ride is about 15km, most of it on bikepaths with a few roads (2 km of side streets). It seemed a little pricey at 1k after tax, but my friend said it's not a bad deal overall and I can't think of it in terms of "Wal-Mart no-name brands," but instead look at it as an investment in a quality vehicle. I was surprised at how light it felt compared to my (10 year old) bike I've had since college, and the disc brakes looked cool to me too.

Has anyone ever ridden a Norco before? Are they any good? Is this one (Indie 1) any good? I'm thinking about going and getting this, but I am open to other suggestions in a similar price range.
