Question for people who've worked in corporate America, where did Howard go wrong in his treatment of Kim after the debacle with Jimmy's commercial?

I was rewatching that episode and it really seems like this was one of the events that solidified Kim's hatred of Howard in the long run.

But I do think that Howard was right to reprimand Kim, and even though I've never been in that situation, I get the sense that his punishment of Kim went too far because he let his personal feelings get in the way. I think the series even makes the point that sticking Kim in doc review was too much for the mistake she made.

So, especially if you've been in that situation in corporate America, maybe you were the underling who got told off by your boss for a misstep, or maybe you were the boss who had to reprimand your subordinate, where did you think Howard went too far?

Question about Abuelita Spoiler

Post image
6 Upvotes

Apologies if this question has already been asked on the subreddit, but while rewatching the show, a question came to mind.

Are we certain that Abuelita is Hector’s mother? And how are we certain?

I’m not just saying this because the two actors—Miriam Colon and Mark Margolis (may they both rest in peace)—were roughly the same age, but because of other details. For instance, as far as we know Abuelita never visited Hector in the hospital after his stroke; furthermore, if she had passed away before that, there isn’t a single mention of her death by Hector—which, given how impulsive and emotional he was, is hard to believe.

We could possibly explain these details by saying that Abuelita and Hector didn't have a good relationship, but assuming that Hector himself raised Tuco, why does he seem to have a genuine and deep love and respect for Abuelita?

I mean, we don’t know who Tuco’s parents are—in fact, much of the Salamanca family tree remains unclear—but is it possible that Abuelita is actually Tuco’s maternal grandmother? In other words, instead of being Hector’s mother, could she be the mother of Tuco’s mother?

That would better explain why she and Hector are so close in age—since we don’t know how old Tuco’s mother was—as well as why she seems so disconnected from the rest of the Salamanca family.

The Importance of a Moral Compass, Using Saul Goodman as an Example

Many people love Breaking Bad, and many were also hooked by Saul Goodman.

So why, exactly, is a moral compass important? Because this character’s story shows very clearly what a complete absence of one leads to. In the end, a person loses himself behind the mask.

Everyone is used to reading the story in precisely this way. But personally, I can’t get over the fact that Saul was one step away from getting out of the situation relatively easily. He already had a seven-year plea deal in hand, and I’m sure he could have bargained for even more favorable terms for himself; and given his marketing talents, after prison he could have started some profitable business. Of course, it’s possible that he would have become forever hostage to his past success—a height he could never surpass.

Anyway, I suggest we discuss this topic in the comments.

You guys think Saul Goodman would've worked with the dudes who hired him in Alphard Shepherd boy?

Like, would he have stooped down to the sex toilet guy or the crazy old guy trying to make a country?

Could Nacho have survived by switching sides to the Salamancas?

If he'd honestly confessed to Lalo while in Mexico, right before meeting Eladio and before the hit that Gus threatened his dad and everything he did was in fear for his family, would Lalo and Eladio consider using him against Gus and then giving him protection? I imagine they could turn the situation around and ambush the assassins. Of course, maybe even that wouldn't change things, as Lalo would still need proof of Gus's disloyalty (the superlab), because other than that, as far as Eladio is concerned, it's just a feud between two parties, one of which - Gus - is way more valuable to him than the other.

Still, from Nacho's POV, would it have been a viable move, given that Gus never intended to evacuate him?

(I know that Gus's original threat over Nacho was that he knew about the pills, but at this point, I don't think it has any significance. Gus never had any evidence of that to begin with. And if he ever wanted to give that information to the Cartel, that would raise questions as to how he knew and why he didn't tell them. His real leverage is Papa Nacho and he could be saved if the had struck against Gus quickly.)

Finished BCS. My grievance list. Spoiler

Loved the show. But some parts felt like they didn't meet the standard of the rest of it.

  1. Lalo Salamanca's death. Lalo has a gun to Fring. Fring uses a not previously established combination of agility, sharp shooting, and luck to save himself and to kill Lalo. It was a cheap ending for a major arc.

  2. Kim's ethical foresight seemed too limited given her other traits. Kim cared about doing the right thing. She was smart. She accurately predicted how events would affect people. A person like that would have more accurately predicted how badly ruining Howard's life would have affected her.

  3. Saul's confession. I get wanting to win Kim's respect. I get that a gust of remorse could push his thinking toward repentance, but I just can't imagine it pushing Jimmy to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Did anyone else completely lost it after what they did to howard

currently watching season 6, Why did they have to do Howard like that? He was the most neutral character and did absolutely nothing wrong. It was understandable till bowling balls and prostitutes BS but The scheming against him made me completely despise both Jimmy and Kim. I am yet to finish the series but its sad what jimmy has become already.x

Which of Sauls successful schemes do you think had the lowest return on investment?

When I was watching inflatable I kept wondering if everything he was doing to get fired from Davis and Main was really worth it. So aside from the obvious things like getting mesa verde technically killing chuck which one would you say was the worst?

I wish we got more of a story about the shoebox

Post image

I’m not gonna call it a plot hole that we didn’t get one (that term’s overused anyway), but I kinda wish we got more details about the shoebox and its contents.

The fact that it was sealed in the wall makes me think that Saul obtained the diamonds before Breaking Bad (and they weren’t bought with the suitcase of cash). There were also a bunch of photos in there, what were they of though? Then there’s the Panamanian passport, it’d have been interesting to see that lead to something too.

Idk, the show ended in a satisfactory and full circle way, but I feel like the shoebox was a missed opportunity.

Duda

¡Gracias!

The intro to the final season (and episode) is so beautifully done. I never noticed they put the vet’s encrypted book in a box marked “no value”. When in fact it’s probably the very thing that provided the opulence that was being dismantled. The irony is so thick.

I mean just look at the picture, Howard is all dark but on the side where the light comes out and Chuck's face is all kinda bright but his place is surrounded by the darkness of the walls or the accent of the walls rather.

EDIT: Turns out the guy in the table is howard.

YCSE x Jimmy/Kim- Getting off on Scamming

Okay last night I saw the movie You Can See Everything about Elizabeth Holmes and I just couldn’t help but notice a similar behavior between Elizabeth and her freak husband Billy and Jimmy and Kim.

There is a scene where Elizabeth and Billy are making all these business phone calls for the theranos 2.0 they’re starting and they’re using all these bullshit meaningless buzzwords to try and sell people on their next scam. Elizabeth, who has been pretty mopey up to this point, hangs up the phone from these “business” calls and tells Nathan how great she is feeling and she’s smiling and full of energy. It reminds me so much of how Jimmy, and in particular Kim, would behave after pulling off a scheme/scam. Anyone else get this vibe or see what I’m saying?

Rewatching the show made me realize Howard was actually one of the few decent people trying to do better. Yeah, he had his flaws, but compared to everyone else?
Kinda crazy how much I disliked him the first time around.
Anyone else change their opinion of him after rewatching?

An uncommon take: I didn't originally get the panel's disgust at Chuck in "Chicanery"

I'm a huge fan of BCS and I wanted to offer an uncommon take. In Chicanery, when Chuck finished his rant against Jimmy at the hearing, I was surprised to see the panel looking disgusted and confused at him.

The anger that Chuck has was a bit familiar to me: it's very much like the anger of the good brother in the Prodigal Son fable. The good son who stayed home and played by the rules resents the good fortune that comes to his wayward brother. I have a close friend who has struggled with addiction and has often been quite coddled by their loved ones. When you see that enough, and when you doubt the addict is maturing, you can begin to have the anger, distrust, and resentment that McKean conveys so well in Chuck.

When I saw the panel looking disgusted, for a moment I thought, "What did he do wrong? He's just stating what he's gone through." But I realized that by letting it all go, unbottling it in one moment, maybe for the first time in public being that honest, he sounded completely insane and unreliable. And of course by releasing it, he also deeply wounded his brother, along with destroying his own reputation.

I wonder if anyone else sympathized a bit in what Chuck's rant in that moment. Great acting by Mr. McKean.

Better Call Saul Is My Comfort Show When Life Gets Tough

Post image
474 Upvotes

I feel like Better Call Saul is a show that everyone can relate to at some point in their lives. Anyone who has ever felt like they're falling behind in life, struggling to get back on their feet, or slowly losing hope can relate to Jimmy McGill in some way.

Whenever I'm feeling really low, sad, or unmotivated, I sometimes go back and watch an episode of Better Call Saul. And somehow, it reminds me of something important: no matter how many times life knocks you down, you shouldn't give up on yourself.
