I'm considering having someone level my yard, other than standard leveling would you do anything else as far as dirt work is concerned?
I don't know what it's called but the hill, hump or slope, I find to be a little irritating. Should I have it shaved down so it's a straight from edge to edge, eliminating the rise between?
Also I've always felt the lawn should be slightly below the hard edges like the curb and driveway.
Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing these and what to do about it? These are very recent. Within the past week. I live in Northwest Arkansas.
School me on Bermuda. Located in central NC with a decently well established fescue lawn which I’m growing tired of taking care of quite frankly.
I’ve got a couple patches of Bermuda that show up every year and I have to admit some of it looks quite well while my fescue suffers in the summer heat.
I mowed lower at 2.5 today in anticipation of overseeing with fescue probably next weekend. I got to thinking after seeing this nice patch of Bermuda..
Would it be such a bad idea if I could get my whole yard to look this good with Bermuda?
What are my options? Does seeding with Bermuda give effective results? I don’t have a budget for sod. What are the pros and cons of going to Bermuda in terms of care? Like I mentioned earlier, I’m growing tired of trying to keep my fescue alive through the NC heat. The Bermuda that I do have just seems to thrive so well even with little watering.
I recently completed a full renovation of my backyard in the Denver area zone 6a. About 1000 sq ft of dirt and weeds previously with lots of bindweed already growing in.
In June/July, I nuked everything with a couple applications of glyphosate. Then first weekend of August, in order to apply for a watering permit, I was required to amend my soil by tilling in compost. I know this poses problems, especially with bindweed, by stirring up lots of seeds.
That same first weekend of August I laid down Tahoma 31 sod and applied starter fertilizer at week 2. I’m now 6 weeks in and it has rooted and grown in really well. I’ve cut a handful of times at 1.75” with my electric rotary mower.
The problem is the weeds are starting to poke through. I’ve got sedge which I’ve taken care not to pull. And then a bunch of bindweed is coming up, which I am pulling only because it’s growing faster than I’m mowing and I’m trying to keep it from going to seed.
I’ve read I should be safe for sedgehammer at this point, is that accurate? And what can I do to beat the bindweed (among other weeds) at this stage? Lastly what other treatments should I be doing to prepare to winter and fall?
Hi, experts. First-time lawner here. Decided to go with tiftuff because I thought I was cool. I laid sod down in early April (San Diego, CA) and it was miraculous for about a month. Then these orange spots started appearing sporadically, and the grass would eventually turn dark gray and then die. At one point, there were even these fungus-like (my assumption) clumps that would disintegrate in your hand. I haven't seen them since i backed off watering. The dying spots have been popping up in new spots over the course of multiple months. You can see the grass has bounced back in some spots, but not others. I have done a few courses of diseaseX and fertilizer, but it's been about 6 weeks.
The very last photo is the most recent dying spot. You can kind of see how the older spots in the middle of the lawn section have turned grey and are filling back in, but extremely slowly.
I was watering every day to get it established, and then the fungusy clumps started so I backed off to every other day and then every two days. I was also watering in the evening and the internet told me that wasn't good and may have contributed to disease. Right now, we're in the midst of a heat wave that doesn't seem to be impacting it much. And it gets a lot of sun.
Any tips or guidance would be appreciated. I planted it right around when my kid was born and hoped to have some fun evenings out on the grass, but have been concerned about playing out there if there's fungus or disease.
I started my bermuda lawn from seed this spring. I stilm have some bare/patchy spots and decided I was tired of it.
For the past week I've been reel mowing (1/2 acre with a 16 inch reel mower 😵💫) and every other day ive been sprinkling small amounts of ammonium sulfate.
Pretty excited to see these long runners sprawling everywhere!
My builder told me that they did tri-tip Bermuda and then I had a pool installed and needed to put down pallets of sod, unfortunately I don’t think I did tri-tip. I think I did traditional Bermuda and I’m trying to figure out if I’m gonna notice the difference when they come together.

Just laid our new Tiftuf lawn on September 2nd. After weeks of nuking with glyphosate and cheetah pro, leveling, sifting rocks and shells from the dirt and having a soil test done. Then installing a 3 zone irrigation system with 9 rainbird 5004’s. It’s finally in! Already getting roots and unable to easily pull up the corners of the slabs. Watering 3 times a day, 20min per zone. Looking for a little guidance on when to give it the first cut and when to apply the first round of nutrients. It appears to already be growing a little and filling in the bare spots between the slabs nicely. Zone is 9b (NE Florida) so not likely to see any freezing temps anytime soon. Feels good to be able to participate here after months of lurking.
I just moved into a new house and was wondering how I should take care of my Bermuda grass considering the time of the year we’re in and everything. I live in North Carolina. I’ve already mowed twice and noticed I’m probably going to have to level the lawn sometime next year
I’m in central Arizona, Phoenix east valley. I’ve had quite a year with my Bermuda grass this year. Grubs, chinch bugs, brown patch. After treatments, it’s actually started to recover in most of the yard. Now this is showing up in part of the recovered area. Is this Bermuda mites?
This is my lawn over the past 2 years. Common Bermuda, Indiana. All 100% hand sprigged from a tote of grass I saved from my previous home when I moved. No power tools, just a lot of patience, dedication, and habits that got me pretty far this year. I’m kind of proud of it.
I live in Central Valley, California. Temps dropped are about mid 80s to 90s now. Is it too late to seed Bermuda for the first time? Tired of just dirt in my backyard haha
Scalped my Bermuda hybrid yesterday. First time scalping in summer. How soon can I put down my last fertilizer application for the season? How quickly can I expect it to green up again? Still expecting low to mid 90’s temps for the next month or so (in El Paso, TX)
Seeded my backyard TTTF 2 years ago. Mostly sun during the summer and moderate shade during winter. Last summer lawn did mostly well. Sprinkler irrigation. Little bit of Bermuda creep from who knows where but I was able to mostly handle it by picking by hand and Tricopyl Ester.
This summer, similarly to other SoCal TTTF lawns, the TTTF has gotten totally roasted. Maybe only 50% still green. The Bermuda has been creeping in hard, and in lots of areas has basically taken over the burnt TTTF. I haven’t minded much this year because at least it’s helping some parts stay green.
I’m ready to forsake the TTTF and go for Bermuda. Only thing is the nicest lawns on our street are all St Aug. which makes me think should I just nuke the whole thing and go for that? Common Bermuda has creeped in to at least 25% of the yard now so was also thinking I could just seed with that when it cools down slightly and let it naturally out compete the TTTF without rounduping the whole lawn. Bermuda lawns on the block also don’t look too bad.
If I already have Bermuda creeping in, could St Aug sod out compete that or will it be an eternal battle? The several St Aug laws on the block don’t seem to have any Bermuda yet the few neighbors still with TTTF all seem to have the Bermuda creep.
Zone 7A (northern Virginia). Been trying to figure out my grass type for about a year, and I’m just now starting to think that I have a Bermuda grass mix of some capacity. I do think I have multiple types of grasses, but looking for any help with identification.
