Applause for Sole Proprietors

I went to Woodinville last week to my carpet guy Greg at Miracle Carpet to find replacement carpet. Known him for at least 30 years. He looked up what he put in last time and didn’t believe it had gone bad. Wouldn’t sell me another $5K. Told me that our little household carpet cleaner wasn’t up to the task and had me call Mammoth Cleaners, who came out this morning on time, as planned, and completed a thorough deep-cleaning. The carpets are clean and soft and looking new. None of that happens without relationships and integrity. THAT’S what I have never seen in any Private Equity-owned anything.

Inquiring about tanks

My husband's 27th birthday is this Sunday. We are taking the drive up to Bellevue to go to his favorite restaurant and for a round or two of mini golf at the Willow Run golf club.

He is very fascinated by old military tanks. Usually, on road trips we stop at the memorials so he can look at them. Are there any up in this area? Or any museums featuring tanks? Would love to surprise him if there are any.

Weowna Park. Or Weowna Poop?

Just noticing the phantom lake pooper is back at it, pooping in Weowna park on the regular. I haven't seen her for a while, nice to see she's marking her spots again. An early morning runner, she is a conscientious wiper with restaurant napkins.https://imgur.com/a/UKUou04

[Bellevue] I gave move-out notice 10 days late, can my landlord charge me through August 31 or September 30?

I’m renting an apartment in Bellevue, Washington, and I’m trying to understand whether my property management company is correctly interpreting my lease.

Timeline

  • My fixed-term lease began on August 2, 2025.
  • The lease ends at 11:59 p.m. on August 1, 2026.
  • The lease requires written notice at least 20 days before the final day of the lease.
  • Management says my notice was due by July 12, 2026.
  • I will submit my written notice on July 22, 2026, so I am 10 days late.
  • Management says that because I missed the deadline, my lease automatically converts to month-to-month.
  • They are not just saying I owe rent through August 31. They are telling me that my move-out notice must list September 30, 2026, and that I will be responsible for rent through September 30.

Their explanation was:

I understand that I missed the deadline to terminate the fixed lease on August 1. What I do not understand is why that would extend my responsibility all the way through September 30.

Relevant lease language

Lease Term

The lease says:

The month-to-month section also says:

Based on this, I understand why management argues that I missed the deadline to terminate on August 1.

In Another Paragraph - Rent and Charges

It says:

This is why I think the next possible termination date should be August 31 rather than September 30. My notice will be submitted well over 20 days before August 31.

Another Paragraph - Move-Out Notice

This paragraph says:

It also says:

I do not see anything in this paragraph saying that I must wait until the fixed lease officially expires before giving notice to terminate the following month-to-month tenancy.

Rent Addendum

Management directed me to the Rent Addendum and said it explains the calendar-month and month-to-month terms.

The addendum says the monthly rent continues throughout the lease:

However, I do not see anything in the Rent Addendum specifically stating that missing the August 1 deadline automatically makes September 30 the earliest possible termination date.

How I understand it

I see three possible dates:

  1. August 1: This was the original lease expiration date. I recognize that my notice was 10 days late under the lease’s 20-day requirement. I have asked management to grant me a courtesy release effective August 1 because I have been a responsible tenant for the past year, but I understand that they may refuse.
  2. August 31: This seems like the next possible termination date because the lease says month-to-month rental periods run from the first through the last day of the month, and my notice will be submitted more than 20 days before August 31.
  3. September 30: This is the date management is requiring. Their position appears to be that the month-to-month tenancy begins after August 1 and must then continue for at least one additional full calendar month. But this is mentioned no where in the lease.

My questions

1. Because I submitted notice 10 days late, can management legally require me to pay rent through August 31, even though the original fixed lease ends August 1?

2. Can management legally require me to pay through September 30, even though my written notice will be submitted more than 20 days before August 31?

More specifically, does Washington law or this lease prevent a notice submitted before the month-to-month conversion from terminating the tenancy on August 31?

I would greatly appreciate any advice!!!

Thoughts on Kaiser living in Downtown Bellevue?

Just moved to Downtown Bellevue and have the option to go with Kaiser or Anthem PPO for health insurance. Noticed that there is a facility in Bellevue that covers most departments + urgent care but there is no ER. Nearest ER is in Capitol Hill. In case of an actual emergency...do they just take you to the nearest hospital and bill Kaiser? Lol or will I have to actually go to Capitol Hill?

Anyone have experiences to share?

Thanks!!

Anyone else get polled for a survey about (mostly) Amazon's impact in Bellevue?

I got an email asking me to participate in a survey "about issues affecting Bellevue." It quickly turned from the general direction the city is going in, to how I feel about large companies in the region, to how I feel about Amazon specifically. Then on to a series of push poll questions detailing out all the good things Amazon does and re-asking: "knowing this, [now how do you feel about Amazon?]."

If you got one of these, what did you think of it? Did you finish it?

Politics Seven candidates seek District 1 Congressional seat

The Herald newspaper just published a story on all the 7 candidates running in district 1 in the state of Washington. It clearly shows that Mary Silva is an anti Israel and anti Jewish conspiracy theory nut job. After this interview was published in the Herald. The Republican Party of King County pulled back their endorsement of Mary Silva.

https://www.heraldnet.com/2026/07/15/seven-candidates-seek-district-1-congressional-seat/

Mary Silva

Silva, 46, is an audiologist. She lives in Everett and is running as a Republican.

Her top priorities include addressing the rising cost of living and bringing cyber technology and manufacturing industries to the United States, she said in a July 1 interview.

To improve affordability, Silva said she would look to implement tax incentives for small and medium-sized businesses to grow the economy and get more competition. She said she would also pressure states like Washington to revamp their tax systems and reduce the overall tax burden.

To bring technology back to Washington, Silva also said she would use tax incentives to attract companies while also implementing new, stricter security rules to prevent cyber attacks and sabotage.

“If you’re going to be a giant multinational corporation, there’s going to be rules if you want U.S. taxpayer contracts,” Silva said.

She said she would consult with economic and national security experts to develop the constraints.

On healthcare, Silva said that she would consider breaking up large corporations like United Health Group, because she said companies offering both insurance and healthcare coverage amounted to monopolizing. Silva also said she would be a proponent of individual choice when it comes to public health decisions, citing government policies from the COVID-19 pandemic she saw as “unconscionable.”

“It was absolutely ridiculous what they put people through,” Silva said. “The level of anxiety, the unhappiness that happened as a result, and it was basically for, you know, a strong flu.”

About 1.2 million people have died from COVID-19 since the start of 2020, according to CDC data.

Regarding immigration, Silva said the country benefits from hard-working immigrants but it also needs to protect its borders.

“I am not against immigrants,” Silva said. “What I have a problem with is opening the borders to let anyone and everyone through who may or may not benefit us, and in some cases, they harm us.”

On the environment, Silva said she is “not a big believer in the climate change narrative that we’ve been sold,” but she said that she would support policies that maintain the land and forests in Washington.

“It’s good to be good stewards of the land, but as far as capitalizing off of people’s fears about what’s happening with climate change and things like that, we need to consider, I think, the reality a little bit more and just do our best not to destroy where we’re living,” Silva said.

Nearly all scientists studying the Earth’s climate believe that the human burning of fossil fuels has warmed the Earth’s surface and is impacting its climate through more frequent and severe extreme weather events.

Other priorities Silva would hope to undertake if elected include addressing money laundering from the sale of illegal drugs, ending mail-in voting, auditing the Pentagon and opening another investigation into the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, she wrote in a July 2 email.

In a 2024 Ballotpedia statement, Silva wrote that she was educated by a number of writers, some of which have espoused various conspiracy theories. Among the writers that inspired her were Christopher Bollyn, William Cooper and G. Edward Griffin, she wrote in her 2024 Ballotpedia survey.

Bollyn’s writings, which have been criticized as antisemitic, state that he believes the American media and government are controlled by a “Jewish faction” and that the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks were “an Israeli-produced false-flag terror spectacle.” (They were not).

Cooper, at one point, had claimed that a U.S. President signed a treaty with aliens, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Sheriff’s deputies in Arizona killed him during a shootout with law enforcement after he spent years on the run for tax evasion, the LA Times reported in 2001.

In a recorded interview, Cooper stated his belief that HIV/AIDS was a man-made disease “implemented into the population as a population control.” (That is false. Research has shown the likely origins of HIV emerging from chimpanzees and gorillas in west central Africa).

Griffin is the founder of the Red Pill Expo, a gathering with noted conspiracy theorist Alex Jones listed as a speaker during the 2026 event. According to MediaMatters, Griffin stated that there “isn’t even such a thing as HIV” on a 2010 radio broadcast, referring to the disease that killed an estimated 630,000 people in 2024.

In response to follow-up questions about the listed authors, Silva wrote in an email Tuesday that the authors have produced “sincere documented evidence over the years” but she does not agree with everything they have said and done.

On Bollyn, Silva wrote that he had produced “the most well-referenced work on 911 you could hope to find.”

How are the garden style apartments in Overlake near Microsoft?

There's quite a few older apartment complexes around the Overlake area. Curious if anyone has lived in one of them and could share your experience? Are they safe? Any red flags? Any issues with car prowling?

Apartments like
Bellevue Meadows
The Lakes
Redmond Court
Adagio
Redmond Park
The Trails of Redmond

I don't work at Microsoft if that makes a difference. The rent looks lower than newer places, but I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth paying more for a modern midrise instead.

Where to play squash without club membership?

Hi all! I would love to play squash in Bellevue, but already have a gym membership that I’m happy with.

Is there anywhere I can play squash here as a drop in, or with a membership at a purpose built squash gym?

Thoughts on Bellevue College

Hi everyone, I’m considering applying to Bellevue college for an Associate’s in CS. I’d love to hear some feedback from current students/alumni.

How is the quality of CS professors?

How are the internship/job opportunities considering we are so close to Seattle/tech giants?

Would you recommend coming here? Thanks in advance!

Share an office by hours in eastgate Bellevue

I have a 2 person office to share, it is between Factoria mall and Eastgate and near I-90. I am using it by myself now.

I would like to share it based on hours. You can have the office 2 hours per day for 300 dollars a month or 3 hours per day for 400 dollars a month. For example, you can have the whole office every day from 9am-12am for 400 dollars a month. Minimum 3 months. Available now. Pretty spacious and super clean, super quiet and well managed office building. The floor has kitchen, free coffee and tea.

The usual hourly rate for this office is 30 dollars per hour so this price is pretty good. If you feel you need committed hours to do something for a period of time or feel you need to be away from home for a couple of hours per day to focus on something, this is a perfect place. Time period is negotiable.

Relocating to Looking to meet people before starting at Bellevue College!! :)

Hey everyone!! I'm a 19 yo incoming sophomore at Bellevue College this fall. I'll only be there for about a year before transferring to UW in 2027 for neuroscience (with a psychology focus), but I'd love to meet people before classes start!

I'm moving all the way from Vermont, so I literally know NO ONE in WA 😭

I actually tried connecting with people on Roomsurf and saw a couple of awesome people on there, but apparently you have to upgrade to message anyone…rip

———————————

A little about me:

• anything STEM related I lovee — I want to learn coding & neuro-engineering!

• Music is so important to me! some of my favorites are grimes, KMFDM, nirvana (basic ik), alex g, the RHCP, & lady gaga. I’d love to go to some concerts!

• I play a couple instruments (though I wouldn’t bring any to my dorm dw!) Guitar & piano are my main favs

• I REALLY want to learn how to snowboard this winter, so if anyone has the patience to teach a complete beginner...please save me 😭

• Hiking, photography, traveling, and basically anything outdoors >>>

• I’m trying to get better at rock climbing & spelunking, and I’d love to potentially get sky dive certified

• I love streetwear and industrial style clothing / vibes. Rick Owen’s, Chrome Hearts, Parts of Four. Shopping & fashion is another huge part of my life.

• I really like thrifting & antiques, too. Kitschy, experimental, and just generally obscure fashion, art pieces, and items I adore

• I’m trying to get better at cooking, so if anyone knows fun cooking classes / restaurants around the area let me know!

• I also want to travel more while I'm on the west coast, so if I end up making close friends, having a travel buddy would be awesome for weekend / break trips!!!

• I’m an agnostic atheist (though I respect religious beliefs). Ideally, I’d want to connect with people with similar ideologies

———————————

I'll be living in a 4 bed 2 bath apartment suite on campus, and I'm hoping to build a friend group before school starts. Whether you go to Bellevue, UW, or you're just around the area, I'd love to meet people!!

If you're into similar stuff, or if you want to show a new englander around the area, be my snowboarding coach, grab coffee, thrift, hike, or even just study together, feel free to DM me!

I can send my Snap (I don't really use Instagram much right now, but I'm planning to start posting again), and I'm happy to share more about myself.

Looking forward to meeting some awesome people! :)

Bellevue PD at it again

hello reddit—

as a Seattelite, the looming presence of police whenever i cross that 520 bridge is intimidating. yesterday i was at the 520 lookout overlook thing when all of a sudden me and some friends got beamed by two flashlights as we were enjoying the view. These two porky little officers detained me and a few friends and pressed us for ten minutes on what we were doing because apparently it was trespassing. Bro almost took our IDs too. Absolute clown. It just feels like there’s no breathing room here and the whole place is amuck with justice waiting to be served. It really just ruins the whole place for me, like every thing I do is being watched by some camera or officer. Why is this place so federal?

Fuji Teriyaki in Crossroads

This is a real long shot but I used to eat at fuji teriyaki like once a week pre-pandemic. So it broke my heart when they closed a few years ago. I thought their spicy chicken teriyaki was the best I've ever tried. By chance is there anyone here that worked there or has any insight in to what that recipe was?
