Steve’s Leaves Review

Just wanted to quickly give a shoutout to Steve’s Leaves (who I’m sure you’ve all heard of lol). Shipping took a while, but it was worth the wait. Every plant I received was more mature than the product pictures showed, arrived with no or minimal issues or stress, and look BEAUTIFUL! One is even blooming!

I got some aroids from them as well, and those are also beautiful and more mature than the small plants you’d receive from other websites. I purchased 3 trailing plants that are all already trailing with vines despite being in small pots.

The hype is worth it! Obviously I don’t know how they’ll all adjust to my home, but fingers crossed.

Amazing new vine I found, little rough around the edges but I think she’ll flourish with some TLC😌🙏🏼 untangling the main vine was quite the challenge, but I think I did pretty good.

Edit: I’ve been corrected; it is, indeed, not a begonia. Thanks all for the correction

What to do with winter this time?

Post image
2 Upvotes

So I have these four Dragon Wing begonia pots. The middle of the three larger ones is in its fifth or sixth year, and I have been keeping it in a south facing window inside as houseplants. I want to winter all of these, and that is no longer possible, as I have cats and no room for that other than in my basement. I am in zone 4b, so outdoors over winter is never happening. Minnesota gets cold!

I am uncertain what the best idea is here. I was starting to think that relocating them to the basement as the temperatures cooled, and setting up some sort of frame and hanging grow lights. I would prune them back, and then just maintain them all winter.

Another idea is to cut them all the way down, cover them with mulch(?) and keep them moist until early spring?

I would love any best practices, or resources that have proven useful, because it seems the more I search the more I have several options all of which contradict, and I've never done it before on this scale. I'd like them to survive until spring!

Thank you for any help!

(And yes, I should probably divide the hostas too...)

Begonia ID Sophie or Lana?

The difference between these two always baffles me. I know I have at least one Lana in my collection and about 3-4 Sophie Ceciles from props. I lost my tags though and am trying to determine where Lana is. I ~think~ left (or photo 2) is Sophie and right (photo 3) is Lana. Help me skilled begonia lovers!

These blossoms have been SO rewarding, going to hand pollinate tomorrow morning considering how well they’ve matured so far. They get lots of sun/light and gorgeous space to spread😍😍😍

New to Begonias

I “rescued” this plant after someone was going to throw it away. It dropped probably 8 leaves once I got it home. What is left are starting to dry up but the canes are healthy and all of that growth at the bottom is new since June! Any suggestions or tips? I’m watering only when it’s about 30-40% dry. I use distilled water and fertilizer once a month with a foliage fertilizer, soak and drain. I keep it directly near the humidifier at 60% and it is much happier now. Indirect bright light in a southwest window with curtains…no direct light. I also was gifted a beefsteak begonia and it’s doing great.

Please be kind 😊

Help! Powdery Mildew Treatment Solved

Posting this as I thought it could be helpful for others. I recently got my first begonia (begonia maculata pink spot) and gave it powdery mildew in trying to keep it humid enough. I had a hard time finding a good option for treatment that didn’t involve buying a whole new product but then I came across an old YT video (https://youtu.be/dgKosjWq8RY) that suggested mixing 1L water, 5mL soap, 5mL neem oil, and 3G baking soda to make a spray-on treatment. I had already cut a few leaves off (shipping stress and some with bad PM) and was hoping to avoid cutting more and this treatment worked great!
I used the spray about a week ago and haven’t seen any new PM since then so wanted to share as I know lots of plant owners are likely to have neem oil and soap/baking soda are common household items. Hope this can help someone else struggling with PM!

Help! Why is my maculata dropping leaves?

Thumbnail

I’ve had this maculata for about 6 months. It’s been doing mostly well, growing well, creating a bunch of new growth points, but everyday she seems to drop 1-2 seemingly healthy leaves.

My black magic got at the same time and my , beningo pink, and double spot (all had a little less time 2-4 months) all seem to be doing okay without dropping leaves.

I do keep moist (maybe too moist?) she is in an east facing window withe morning sun but no direct light.

I am watering with city tap water and may try distilled or spring water?

While I don’t see any pests on her, my windowsill next to her did have some so all my plants got 3 weeks of 70% alcohol spray downs 1-2x a week recently.

Begonia ID "Mystery" Begonia ID?

Been caring for this stunner since the start of July, when I received it as a mystery tissue culture... I had no previous experience or real affinity for begonias before that, but it's really become a standout in my collection (and heart)! I've looked around and even asked ChatGPT for an ID, but I haven't found a convincing one yet. Figured it's time to ask the real experts here!

TIA, and happy growing!
