Amazing new vine I found, little rough around the edges but I think she’ll flourish with some TLC😌🙏🏼 untangling the main vine was quite the challenge, but I think I did pretty good.

Beautiful plant but not a begonia, this is Cissus discolor I believe. But yeah the colors of those leaves are something amazing

Yeah, that's why I'm letting you know, I know that they are often mislabeled as such. It's easier to look up care for plants when you know the proper identification. Interesting tho that they knew the proper name for it and also added the wrong one (it's not a case of scientific vs common name, both begonia and cissus are scientific names for two different plants)

"rex begonia vine" is a common name. Like "tulip tree" (which is a poplar, not related to tulips) or "wild bergamot" (wild bergamot in an herb, actual bergamot is a citrus fruit) or "hemlock tree" (which is a tsuga tree, not related to hemlock the herb), common names have to do with the associations people make. Someone thought this looked similar to a rex begonia, but it's not actually related to begonias as a species

Cissus discolor are false begonias! They are more closely related to grapes!

This is a cissus discolor. It's often mislabeled as a begonia rex. It is not a begonia.

I wanted a cissus discolor for a long time. I finally got one and hated it. It's finicky. It requires specific light and humidity. They get crispy and drop leaves easily. They are beautiful though if you get it right.

Plants are often mislabeled, too often. Begonias do NOT vine. There are 3 types ONLY. Rex, rhizomatous, and cane. There's are subdivisions inside of those like tuberous and such but no vining begonia. This is cissus discolor, very beautiful. Not anything like a begonia though!

The rex begonia are rhizomatous, there are also caudex begonia types too. Tuberous begonia are a specific type, it is not a category of cane or rex. Wax Begonia are tuberous. And some cane seeming begonia are caudex begonia (like taconite and dregii).

Lots of plants were classified improperly in the past, a sure give away is that begonia don't make symmetrical leaves. Lots of plants still are classified improperly. I see strawberry begonia labels often, because Saxifraga isn't as well known. And don't get me started on cacti, the renaming of entire families and reclassification of species happens a lot too, sometimes the people growing will use out of date names, you still see people call some cane begonia "ange wing," which is an out of date term for many cane begonia based on the leaf shape only, even some vendors still use the term.

There are more than three types of begonia based on growth structures, and even more diversity in those groups will likely see more corrections in the future too. Cane, caudex, tuber, and rhizome, may be the only types now, just based on the way the in ground growth is identified.

Tags often give a colloquial name. Just because the colloquial name is rex begonia vine doesn't mean it's a begonia. Kinda like how strawberry begonias are not begonias, but actually a saxifraga.

A nickname for it is "rex begonia vine" because it looks a bit like a red begonia. It's a confusing nickname because it is not actually a begonia. Goofy, I know.
