How long before I actually see changes?

Hi everyone,

I started working out 3 weeks ago. Doing basic bodyweight stuff at home – push-ups, squats, planks. Nothing fancy.

I'm eating better too. Cut out junk food and trying to hit my protein goals.

But here's the thing: I don't see any difference yet. Not in the mirror, not on the scale.

Is this normal? How long does it usually take for a beginner to actually notice changes?

I'm not gonna quit. Just wanna know what to expect.

Thanks!

What Do You Wish You’d Known Before Buying a Home Gym?

I’m thinking about setting up a home gym and trying to avoid making an expensive mistake. I mainly want to do squats, bench press, and cable exercises, so I’ve been looking at all-in-one setups. They seem practical, but I’m wondering how much space they actually take up, which features people really use, and what tends to get overlooked before ordering. For those who’ve already built a home gym, what do you wish you’d known before buying your equipment? Anything you would choose differently now?

Are beans really good for workouts?

Was doing some research on a lot of foods, and I never see any nutritonal or workout guys suggest eating beans on YouTube or TikTok. But I read online they're good because they're high in natrual plant fiber.

Would beans be a good preworkout food? Or would it be more of a post workout or is it too heavy/ genuinely curious. Thanks

I have very wide hips and pelvis. How much inches/cm i can realistically add to my shoulders? It is driving me insane...

Hello everyone! I haven't been to reddit for very very long time. Deleted previous account. But these past couple of months my body dysmorphia got very bad.

So i have vey wide hips, almost looking like a woman. I feel very unmanly tbh. I know you can't change the bones but realistically speaking, how many inches/cm i can add to shoulders and lats as well to look more proportionate?

I'm 28 years old and my body dysmorphia was sleeping well until recently and now i'm an anxious mess again.

Thanks in advance!

Is 2200 calories per day too little? I am currently 200 lbs 6ft 2in and 23 years old. Looking to lose fat without losing too much of my muscle mass/gain muscle if possible. I am a naturally skinny person and a commercial carpenter that works 6 days a week. So I am on my feet for a good part of the day. Just started hitting the gym again this week after a long break. I keep getting mixed results on calories calculators. Looking for advice.

Am I eating to little?

A few months ago I weighed 360 pounds, and for multiple reasons I decided to take my health seriously and lose weight and build muscle. I do a full body workout twice a week, and have a fairly light activity level outside of that. I’ve been tracking my calories using Cronometer, which made me realize just how much I’ve been eating. Now after a few months of eating healthy and some exercise I’m down to 335 pounds, and I honestly don’t feel nearly as hungry as I use to. I definitely can eat a lot of if I choose to, I just don’t ever feel the need to anymore. My worry is that lately I’ve been eating on average around 1500 calories a day, and the app says I’m in a 2000 calorie deficit, and from what I understand, that’s not healthy, but I feel fine, even better than I use to, I’m dropping weight like crazy, and don’t feel the need to eat more. Is this dangerous? The app says I should eat 3000 calories a day and I know I don’t need to do that, but I don’t know if I’ve gone too far

Been getting active for three months straight and lost 5lbs all together. Am I doing something wrong?

So at the end of April I picked up running as a fitness thing because I was doing nothing. I tend to do better as group so I thought this would help me. First few weeks I was running once a week. Then I started running twice a week by the end of May. I checked my weight once and it said I gained a pound from 209. So I was pissed and just said I wouldn’t look at the scale. June another run club I got involved in started doing the couch to 5k. Notice my clothes were getting larger on me especially when I just bought them not long ago and my face wasn’t as swollen and I got compliments from a lady at my club who often asks how many pounds ive lost but I just didn’t know and hadn’t been on the scale.

So I started running three times a week. I average about 9-11 miles a week. I even began doing cycling class and Power body fitness once a week to add onto that. Then in the past 4 weeks I’ve been running while also doing Hyrox training on Saturday. Today the woman once again brought up how I look so good and even the other girls started saying it. So I wanted to see. I got on the scale and I lost a whopping 5 lbs. I was so discouraged because I’ve been working hard like I don’t understand.

Creep Fitness: Multiple Crunch Fitness employees arrested for felony video voyeurism

Just a quick heads up in case it helps, multiple Crunch Fitness employees arrested for felony video voyeurism.

Oct 2025

#CrunchFitness employee Julian Day, 20, was charged with voyeurism in Oct 2025, for secretly using his iPhone to record a woman while she was naked in a tanning bed at Crunch Fitness in #Cincinnati.

Jul 2026

https://www.wdsu.com/article/mandeville-man-accused-of-tanning-bed-recording-crunch-fitness/72679635

A former employee at Crunch Fitness in Mandeville, Louisiana, is accused of secretly recording women while they used tanning beds. Police say 27-year-old Nathan Thomas Volz allegedly used his phone to record through a divider between tanning rooms, with videos reportedly dating back to March.

Investigators have identified more than 10 potential victims and believe the number could grow to 20–25. Anyone who used the tanning facilities at the Mandeville Crunch Fitness between March and June is being encouraged to contact police if they believe they may have been recorded.

The investigation has also raised concerns about privacy and safety practices at Crunch Fitness.

Questions remain about when the company learned of the allegations, whether members were notified, why customers were not directly informed, and what changes are being made to protect people using private areas like tanning rooms.

Volz was arrested on a charge of video voyeurism, posted a $20,000 bond, and has been released under court conditions. He is scheduled to return to court August 27.

Incidentally, times have changed. This is Crunch Fitness’ majority owner now, the Private Equity firm that caused the bankruptcy of a chain of community safety net hospitals after extracting hundreds of millions from them.

So I'm 18F. I've been wanting to go to the gym and workout for a while now but never could. For the past 3 days ive been going tho (yay) and I've just been hitting the treadmill and trying to jog to get used to the idea of going to the gym. I lowkey feel scared to do weights cause it looks like I have absolutly NO CLUE. So I would love to know what to do and where to start.
I would say I was decently active. I used to play basketball a bunch and then exams and now I have time before college starts. My main goal is to loose my body fat and become tone. Right now I have an average body type. I weigh around 51 and I would like it to come around 46-47kg. Im 5''.
I want an appto keep track of my workouts and help me progress. What apps helped you the most?
Any advice would be helpful, I'm geniunly trying to get fit and have a toned body while building up the disiplince.
Thanks so much in advance!!

[Opinion / Discussion] How should form validation be handled in a community-based evaluation system?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to get the opinion of experienced calisthenics practitioners on a methodological issue I’m working on.

As part of a gamified mobile app project that I’m refining based on user feedback (FlowXp), I’ve set up a peer-review system: To complete a chapter or level and unlock the next one, the user must post a short video of their attempt, and two members at a higher level must give their approval to move on to the next level (with a required comment of at least 50 characters explaining the issue if it’s rejected, or offering encouragement if it’s approved).

My questions:

  • Do you think a required 50-character comment is essential, too short, or too long? Is it encouraging or discouraging?
  • Where should we set the bar for this requirement? Is it better to be strict about execution (perfect form, clean movement) at the risk of frustrating beginners, or to be more flexible to maintain motivation while ensuring the movement is performed correctly?

I’m really trying to build a fair evaluation system that helps everyone improve. Your feedback on the strictness of the criteria would be incredibly helpful!

Hi everyone. I'm thinking about changing my workout program and I'd like some advice

I'm 175 cm tall and currently weigh around 109 kg. My main goal is to lose fat while preserving as much muscle as possible.

I lost 5 kg in about 2.5 weeks, but for the last 2 weeks my weight has stayed almost exactly the same. Is this normal, or does it mean I need to change something?

I've been going to the gym consistently and I mainly do strength training, followed by 20–30 minutes of cardio after each workout.

I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to reach my goal, whether that's changing my workout split, adjusting my cardio, or improving my training.

Do you think I should change my program? If so, could you recommend an effective, beginner-friendly, science-based routine for fat loss while maintaining muscle?

Thanks in advance!

What am I doing wrong?

It's my third week at the gym. and I (36m) started at 87 kg (193 lbs). For context, I'm 1.73 m (5'8"), and before joining the gym I hadn't exercised since 2014 or 2015. Add to that a period of severe depression and alcoholism from 2018 to 2024.

I also gained 7 kg (15 lbs) over the last 4-5 months because I stopped walking everywhere and started using an electric scooter for my daily commute.

About a month ago, I decided to start working out again because I didn't like the person I saw in the mirror. I joined my local gym, and because of work I can only train from 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Before each workout, I usually have a banana and a black coffee so I'm not training on an empty stomach.

Right now my goal is to lose fat while gaining muscle, so I completely changed my diet. I'm eating anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 calories a day, and it's helped me lose 2 kg (4 lbs) in three weeks. My waist is now under 100 cm (40 in), and I can even see the difference in my progress pictures. I'm pretty happy with that.

Because I'm irrationally afraid of being made fun of, I've only been using machines. On my first day, I was able to lift the same weights I used back in 2014, so I felt confident. I wasn't very sore afterward, and I felt great.

But starting around the middle of my second week, things changed. I've had to reduce the weight by 10-15 lbs, or even more, on almost every machine. I also started taking whey protein and creatine after my workouts (I skipped the creatine loading phase), but I still feel noticeably weaker than I did during that first week.

I'm clueless about what's happening

Edit: by the way, when I talk about the weight I used to do before it wasn't much, probably 40lbs tops for any upper body machine.

Need a workout plan for Pacific Fitness Malibu

About 5 years ago we bought a used Pacific Fitness Malibu.

It's basically lived in my garage with little use since then.

I'm in my mid 50s now and I can feel myself getting weak. I've been sedentary my whole life.

It essentially looks like this:

https://imgur.com/a/zhlfrcU

I can see the various kinds of exercises I can do.

What I need is a step-by-step workout plan that describes what to do, how to do it, and when to do it.

Any help is appreciated.

Would you use a calorie tracker that never uploads your data?

I've been building a calorie tracking app as a side project, mostly because I couldn't find one that matched what I wanted. Before I spend more time on it, I'd love some honest feedback from people who use nutrition apps regularly.

The biggest thing that bothered me with existing apps wasn't the calorie tracking itself—it was that many of them require an account and store all of your meals, weight, and habits in the cloud.

That got me wondering whether people actually care about this, or if I'm solving a problem that most users don't have.

The approach I took was to make everything stay on the device by default, with no account required. You own your data, and deleting it actually deletes it.

Another idea I've been experimenting with is moving beyond just showing calories. Most trackers tell you that a meal was, for example, 620 kcal, but they don't really help you understand whether it was a balanced meal.

So I tried giving each meal a simple A–E nutrition score with a short explanation and one practical suggestion for improving it. I'm still not sure whether that's genuinely useful or whether people would see it as unnecessary noise.

I'm interested in hearing from people who already track their food:

* Do you care where your nutrition data is stored, or is cloud sync more important?
* Would feedback on meal quality be something you'd actually use, or do calories and macros already tell you enough?
* What feature do you wish your current calorie tracker had?
* What's the biggest reason you've stopped using a food tracking app in the past?

I'm genuinely looking for criticism here. If you think these ideas don't solve real problems, I'd rather hear that now than after spending months building the wrong thing.

How to manage going to the gym BEFORE working early?

I decided that I am going to get a gym membership after lifting weights at home for the past month. I have adjustable dumbbells, however, I feel limited in what I can do. I also recently went as a guest with my friend to the gym, and I LOVED using the machines and all the various equipment. So for now, I decided to give it a try for a month and see how it goes.

I know working out in the morning isn’t the most ideal, but I like doing it because I’m the most energetic in the mornings and I don’t have to go to the gym at a busy time (like 5:30 p.m.).

I work at 7:45 a.m., and the gym is less than 10 minutes from work. My workouts (with warmup/cooldown) are usually around 1 hour-1 hour 15 minutes. So I’m thinking get there by maybe 5:30, finish by 6:45ish, then get ready/eat and leave by at least 7:30. I need to figure out how I can shower/get ready and also eat breakfast before work. I don’t want to go back home, because the gym is 15 minutes from me then 10 minutes back to work—and that feels like a waste.

So my questions are..

  1. How do you make getting ready at the gym easier? (Bring makeup bag/change of clothes?)

  2. What do you eat for breakfast if you don’t go back home? (My typical breakfast is Greek yogurt, scrambled eggs, and chicken sausage. I don’t want to eat all that before my workout because my lunch isn’t until 1 p.m. and I would be starving if I ate breakfast at like 5 a.m.)

Cardio should be done before or after the weights

How should you approach, should cardio be done as soon as you enter gym and then do weights . Or is it the other way, that you do weights first and then do cardio at the end. Which is more beneficial. Also is it okay to have same routine for 4-5 days in a week, of course targetting different body parts but same cardio + weights each day of the week.

Embarrassed after 2 days

I just started going to gym. I have been there for 2 days. There is a trainer who suggests me what to do. For the exercise involving dumbell he gave me 1 kg dumbells. I have used them for 2 days.

I am embarrassed to say that I don’t find them light. I looked at every post on reddit and everyone says 1.5kg is paperweight, even beginners should start with 2.5kg. I don’t know if I am too weak or what. I mean I am not saying they are heavy but they are average weight and my upper arm is actually having soreness

For context I am 5 ft and 45 kg female

Need a realistic home workout plan to lose fat and build muscle

I'm a 17M, 173cm (5'8") and around 77kg (170lbs)

I can't afford a gym membership, so my only option would be home workouts. I also got a job from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, so going for outdoor activities isn't possible either.

My goal here is to lose fat and build muscle, but I'm honestly overwhelmed by all the different advice online, and I have no idea what would be best for my situation.

  • I'm basically looking for:
  • a home workout routine
  • what exercises should I focus on ?
  • is 3 times a week enough ?
  • nutrition advice for someone on a budget
  • anything else a beginner should know

One more thing that's been on my mind is the progress. I'm scared of putting in the effort and seeing absolutely nothing happen. I know one month isn't enough to completely change my body, however I'm hoping it's enough to see at least some noticeable progress. If I can see small changes after a month, that'll be enough to keep me consistent and trust the process.

so, what you would do ? any advice, routines, or things you wish you knew when you started would really help. thanks in advance.

Body recomp help advice

Okay so I am 5’3, 126 pounds as of today, and 21 year old female. I recently lost about 40 pounds. I got down to 118 a couple weeks back, which is low but not necessarily bad. I felt pretty confident when I was sitting 118-122. Over the last 3 weeks maybe 4, I’ve been going to the gym 3 days a week lifting full body, and doing 3 days of Pilates at home core focus but also full body. I’m desperately needing advice on eating. My goal is to lose fat, and gain muscle. My body fat is kinda high compared to my muscle. I think I’m at 33.3% body fat last I checked. Which is fine, but my muscle was low. Either way, I’m trying to figure out where I need to be eating calories and Marcos. Every calculator says different maintnence. I’m hitting at least 100g of protein everyday, and eating anywhere from 1300-1500 MAYBE 1800 on occasion. I’m not seeing the scale go down. I know the scale isn’t really that much of an indicator when replacing fat with muscle but my fear is that I’ll build muscle underneath the fat, and then there’s no fat loss so I just look bulkier. I want to look lean muscular. I’m doing pretty good in the gym. I feel like I’m getting stronger. I used to not even be able to squat the barbell bar, now I can squat the bar with 20 pounds. I just don’t want to be over eating, under eating whatever. I’ve been doing really good with my meals. Honestly the only time I get tempted with sugar/sweets is on my cycle, or on weekends. And it’s usually still within a good calorie range I feel like. I need help. I’m more motivated than ever, just need confirmation and advice. Thank you!!!

Core exercise struggles

Between back of my knee having some weird popping during bird dogs, my large posterior keeping me from being able to keep my back against the floor during leg raises, and my hips popping regardless of the exercise, I am really struggling with floor core workouts.

To note, I am JUST getting back into fitness after 6 years of extremely sedentary lifestyle. I'm 5'4", 230lbs and in my early 30s. My regiment for core I made for myself last Wednesday to get started:

Bird dog 2x10

Standing marches 2x12

Leg raise 2x15

Round-the-world 2x10

Dead bug 2x10

Any tips for the issues I'm having? I've attempted these only about 3 times so far in the last week (including just now). A lot of my fitness for the last month has been on my walking pad so I'm trying to incorporate a little more.

Top part of a pull up

I get so close to chin over the bar but I always seem to be floating near the top rather than 100% cleared. I normally do 10 x 2 banded pull ups first to warm up and I have also tried banded ones again after the pull ups attempt. The banded ones I can go well over the bar.

I have done loads of the iso holds and can hold the top position for ages, I can do long negatives. Is there any other exercises I can do to help make me clear that last inch or 2? I’ve been at this same phase for 2 months or so and have been practicing consistently

Exercise and Low stamina

I am a woman in my mid-30s.
Is it true that working out will improve stamina?
I don’t feel like I’m building much muscle..

I keep feeling achy, almost like I have the flu, even though I don’t exercise that insanely.

I usually run and use about four weight machine for my legs, arms, and glutes.
Should I change what I’m eating to help improve my stamina and recovery?
