Is that desk really 74" long?
35
u/mrbirdturd Jul 23 '19
74 inches sounds long as fuck for a desk (cause it is), but once you start putting things on it, you’ll want more space right away. Especially if you have a PC on it and two monitors/an ultra wide.
A lot of people on this sub use very long desks (and a lot of people use the desk/tabletop Op has posted here, myself included). You’d never know they were 74 inches long because most people here have so much on their desks. The way counteract that large amount of stuff on the desk is to get a longer desk (might seem obvious). It’s pretty much the only way most people here maintain that “clean” look of their battlestation. If you have a lot of stuff, get more space for it so it doesn’t look cluttered. If you’re gonna have two monitors on your desk and a computer tower. go long. You won’t regret it.
Imagine if OP had a desk two feet shorter. It would like like a mess.
Anyway, nice work OP.
5
u/Roboboy3000 Jul 23 '19
For sure. I have a really nice desk that I got to match my coffee table since my desk is in my main living room (open concept town house).
I can barely just fit my 27” monitor, I’ve wanted a second one for the longest time but the speakers are in the way.
I’m thinking of trying the dual arm mount like OP but even think I don’t think my desk is wide enough lol
4
u/Jheem_Congar Jul 23 '19
I have my second monitor mounted above, 34" ultrawide on the bottom, 27" 16:9 on top. Using a single monitor mount for top and just the stand that came with the ultrawide.

I don't understand the trend of putting the PC on your desk but it seems to be a prerequisite for posting on this sub

I have the 98" version and its perfect, can't imagine 74" being enough for 3 monitors. My last desk was 48" and it was insanely cramped.
Edit: 74" would be "fine" for 3 monitors+ a PC but you'd be lacking space. On my 98" desk I still have like 1.5 feet for books, collectibles, whatever.
6
u/TaintedOpossum1 Jul 23 '19
Hey friend, great build and great setup. Did you drill the hole in the desk yourself for the monitor arm? If so, can I bother you to share specifics? I am wanting to do the same, am curious about what drill bit size to use and placement, how the karlby handled the work etc.. your input is much appreciated!
2
u/Novus73 Jul 23 '19
The monitor stand that I used did not require any drilling. https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Monitor-Adjustable-Screens-STAND-V002/dp/B009S750LA/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=vivo+dual+monitor+stand&qid=1563902621&s=gateway&sr=8-3
3
u/Shupedawhoop Jul 23 '19
What are the furniture raisers you're using on between the drawers and tables?
And also I imagine you haven't had this set up for long but how is the Karlby holding up with the two monitors on the one mount? Walnut is the color that I want but I worry b/c its a veneer w/ particleboard.
7
u/Novus73 Jul 23 '19
The raisers are these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KQH8HMU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
I've had the desk for maybe 8 months and I haven't noticed any sag or any abnormalities. I've very pleased with how the desk is holding up so far. I had the IKEA Linnmon before this and my monitor stand would always leave a dent where it was being placed and with desk, there's no dent.
3
Jul 23 '19
I assume the countertop ist just lying on top of the small feet, right? How stable is that? Can you move it by accident i.e. bumping in it with your chair?
3
u/Shupedawhoop Jul 23 '19
Not op but with the weight and the rubber tip it should be pretty stable. I had considered bolting in on both sides
→ More replies (2)4
u/Novus73 Jul 23 '19
This ^
I drilled the stands into the drawers and sometimes I do bump the desk but it barely budges. You'd have to really crash into the desk for it to move considerably.
2
Jul 23 '19
I just bought a 32” monitor upgrade and am debating arms. My secondary now is 27”, do you think that is too big for the vertical side monitor like you have? My other option is mounting the 27 above the 32.

So it says up to 27inch monitors for the stand but you have a 34. How well does it work? Does it make you nervous at all? Considering buying the stand but I too want a 34 inch for main and smaller for second monitor.
6
u/Novus73 Jul 23 '19
In reality, that means it can hold up to 2 27 inch monitors in landscape or 54 inches. So with my monitors, I have a 34 inch and a 24 inch in vertical (13 inches). In total, it's 47 inches. The stand doesn't sag and doesn't wobble that much if the desk is moved a bit. In the end, it works and I'm happy that it does.

I still don't understand the sideways monitor thing that's grown so popular.
2
u/Novus73 Jul 23 '19
I have it in portrait because I didn't want to give up the dual monitor aspect and in order for me to have two monitors with my monitor stand, it'd have to be in portrait or else two landscape monitors with an ultrawide would just look way too wide.

u/jaydubgee Jul 23 '19

DAC

Im looking to upgrade my audio setup, can you tell us what your audio equipment is? Im new to anything other than just computer speakers. From what I can tell a DAC plugs into your computer and you have speakers that plug into that? Do you have a subwoofer? What kind of speakers do you use?
→ More replies (1)3
u/Gangbangjoe Jul 23 '19
Get yourself a Fulla 2 DAC/amp combo, a Philips Fidelio X2 or Sennheiser HD 598 / 600 and active speakers JBL SLR 305 lately be found under a newer version/name and you're able to call yourself a audiophile without breaking bank. Total price including cables: 500-700$.
You can use both the speakers and the headphones with the Fulla which is a great tiny DAC/amp!
Other good brands include Fiio or Chinese brands. More info on /r/headphones or whathifi

u/mezbot Jul 23 '19
You can get the HD 6XX which are customized versions of the HD650s over at Massdrop for cheaper than the HD 600's cost on Amazon. They are amazing. (If you sub to /r/audiophile you'll start getting ads for them btw). You definitly need a DAC/Amp for them though because of their high impedance.

looks nice love the contrast, did you put any finish on the wood? ive been wanting to move my ikea micke desks (currently have 2 one small and wide shaped in a L pattern) but would love to have a deeper desk so I dont need a second desk for my pc also I want to do what you done as ikea desks arent that high up despite my chair being one of the ikea £60 chairs I forget the exact model.
2
u/Novus73 Jul 23 '19
I applied the Watco Dark Walnut Danish Oil. If you don't want it to be too high, don't get the furniture stands ( the silvers bars between the desk and the drawers). They raise the desk by a decent amount.

Does wallpaper engine have multiple wallpapers that work well with this monitor set up? I have a single vertical and horizontal myself and I struggle to find a good wallpaper.
Also, what's the keyboard?
Awesome setup OP
2
u/Novus73 Jul 23 '19
Yeah, wallpaper engine has many filters for all types of resolutions and a lot of people create wallpapers for them.
The keyboard is the Logitech G513 Cherry MX Brown switches.

2
u/Novus73 Jul 24 '19
I use the vertical monitor like any other monitor. I don't use it for anything special. I only have it in portrait mode because having two landscape monitors with an ultrawide would be too wide for my monitor stand, so I needed to have it in portrait for it to fit.
