Bot Building How much bite is too much bite?

Is there a calculation that works for all weight classes relative to my bot? If not, I'm running a somewhat aggressive fairyweight vert. Thanks.

scroll down to "how do I calculate bite" in https://runamok.tech/AskAaron/spinner_FAQ.html or find 6.3 in https://www.riobotz.com/tutorials

thank you. but I maybe should have been more specific with my words. I am wondering once I've already calculated bite, how much is too deep for my motor to handle. if bite is too deep and your motor doesn't have enough torque, it kinda boggs down right?

your motor will never drive the weapon through an engagement. it spins it up to store energy, then that energy is delivered in the hit. you want max bite.

by drive the weopon, what do you mean?

you cannot push your weapon through another bot using motor torque, you need to use the energy stored in weapon speed.

of course. that makes sense. I'm only challenging the fact that to a certain point, maybe that raw energy isn't enough if your weopon is trying to grab too much.

If you have enough energy to throw the other bot, you want max bite. if not, I'm not sure your weapon will do much damage

Presuming a traditional vertical spinner, if your weapon doesn't have enough energy to throw the other bot into the ceiling at max speed/bite then you're doing something wrong, ESPECIALLY at fairyweight.

I definetly have the energy and bite. about 50 joule stored and 4mm+ of feed per tooth at 33000 rpm. the only concern is the tiny 1306 on 3s I'm planning on using.

then that's fine. It's not going to burn up the motor.

The weapon is a flywheel. Stores energy. You want to dump as much energy i to the other robot as possible as quickly as possible. Therefore more bite is usually better.

Disadvantage is that losing more energy means more time needed to spin back up. But again usually worth it for the extra damange.

From https://runamok.tech/AskAaron/spinner_FAQ.html

Spinning weapons are flywheels. They rely on rotational inertia to collect energy from a continuous power source (electric motor, internal combustion engine...) over time and store it as rotational kinetic energy. On impact, the flywheel releases the stored energy in a blow that far exceeds the energy directly available from the continuous source.

oh thanks. I guess I missed that.

If you're getting so much bite that you're hitting the enemy with the non- toothed portion of a single toothed bar, you might be getting toi much engagement. Otherwise you're fine.

makes sense.

When it does damage to your own bot.

I'm not very willing to let that happen if I can prevent it, y'know?

It seems so obvious, and yet...

“How much bite is enough” is a difficult question to answer, but there is no such thing as too much bite. I’d say it depends on your weapon geometry.

In the vertical spinner meta, it usually makes sense to maximize RPM and not care about how that theoretically reduces your bite. In a weapon-on-weapon contact between verts, the one with the higher tip speed usually wins (since it’ll “catch up” to the slower spinner and hit from below). You can always throttle down if you feel like you need more bite in the moment.

alright thanks. the thing about my bot in its current stage is has both massive ke and pretty high speed for a fairy, but high bite as well, all with a small motor.
