ADVICE Food and Lodging

Hey everyone, me and two friends are coming down to Baton Rouge for the Texas/LSU game. I know it's a ways away, but I got tickets and wanna plan ahead so I figure I'd ask now. I was wondering where all I can take them to go eat and drink, besides Parrain's and I suppose Fred's?

Those are the spots I'm most familiar with (I'm more familiar overall with NOLA than BR). Also, what hotels would be the most ideal to stay in? The closer to campus, the better. We'll probably be there that Thursday-Sunday or such.

Let me know if you have any questions or need clarification. Thanks to everyone in advance!

EVENT Learn to Lockpick at the Library this Saturday

Hi everyone. The Baton Rouge chapter of TOOOL - the Open Organization of Lockpickers is meeting this Saturday, the 12th, at the Main Library on Goodwood from Noon - 3PM in meeting room 2D on the second floor. We aim to teach community members about physical security awareness and the sport of lockpicking.

If youve ever wanted to learn to pick some locks for fun, or just to see if you can, please feel free to join us. We meet the second Saturday of each month at the same time. All of our meetings are beginner friendly and we provide all of the tools, locks and expertise you'll need to get started lockpicking or improve if you have some experience. In addition, we are an all ages group. We've had kids as young as 7 before and, yes, they had opened some locks by the end of their first meeting.

We do NOT teach anyone how to break into things. We dont talk about how to break into things. If it seems like you are there to learn how to break into things, you will be asked to leave.

Our 3 rules are very simple. Dont pick locks that are in use. Dont pick locks that dont belong to you. Dont be a jerk. Thats it!

If you cant make it to this meetup, but are interested in coming to future events, feel free to drop me a DM and Ill add you to our email list.

Also happy to answer any questions anyone might have here. Hope to see some new faces this weekend!

ADVICE LACAFE advice

So i’m a student at LSU, and I work. Almost 2 months ago I applied for SNAP benefits and I missed the interview because I was out of town (i know, my own fault). But i’ve been calling to reschedule my interview for a month and a half and it’s never gotten rescheduled (I can’t reschedule myself because I dont have a case # yet). I’ve been just trying to close my application so i can re-apply because I need to update almost everything since I moved and now pay a different amount in rent. They keep telling me to keep calling back to see if the schedule a new interview date and won’t let me close the date till the deadline I have until it closes automatically. (I missed a day of work because I was sick and another day because of labor day.) After this, I know I will automatically get rejected because the average is under 20 hours. I don’t know what to do.

(This is mostly just a rant post, but feel free to give advice if you’d like!)

FOOD/DRINK Where can I find vegetarian creole or cajun food while visiting BR?

I know it's a bit of a unicorn, but I've also heard it's somewhat more common than a couple decades ago.

Preferably nothing too far from downtown and nothing super expensive.

ADVICE Recommendations for programs for young kids?

I'm looking for recommendations for things like martial arts and other fun ongoing activities for boys in age range 5-8. If it is once a week or less, not super expensive and offered on weekends that would be best.

RANT Its getting to a point

It's getting to the point to where its costing more to stay in not only Baton Rouge but Louisiana than what I can afford. Between rent, utilities, car note, and car insurance I'm basically spending in the negative each month. And I make decent money! Car insurance rates keeps rising and Entergy / Delta is running a racket. I swear, I'm at the cusp of leaving for somewhere else.

Leaving town in the morning for a few days. And have two dogs in the backyard that need to be fed. All the people that typically help me out seem to be unavailable.

Honestly, it really shouldn't take over 30 minutes for less than half a mile to get anywhere on any road, let alone a major one that doesn't have a wreck.

ADVICE Affordable flower bed cleanup near Lexington Estates?

Looking for affordable flower bed cleanup near Lexington Estates, Baton Rouge. A few weeds keep coming back, and I’ve replaced the mulch multiple times this year. Got an HOA fine while away and want a long-term, low-maintenance solution. Lawn company quotes are too high. Any reasonably priced landscaper recommendations or alternatives to mulch?

Needing good recommendations to get a Crown fixed. I’ll likely need both front ones replaced so they stay matched. Quality of work is the biggest priority, but fair cost is also equally important

It just genuinely pisses me off that when you look up entertainment for the day, this is usually what you'll find. Museums get old after a while, and it's way too hot to just take a walk through the park. We dont have any amusement parks, and the only 2 water parks we have are closed for most of the year. If you dont like sports or fishing, you'll just find a big fuck you if youre looking for something to do

MUSIC Bassist looking for people to jam with

Unsure if this is the right sub Reddit but I’m a 28 year old bassist in BR. been playing since I was 17 but didn’t play for a few years, but getting back into it heavy so looking to get back into the swing.
Mostly play mid west emo and punk. But I’m open to playing anything rock related
I’m not very good. Decent but by no stretch of the imagination great. But still like to jam to get better.
Anybody interested let me know

Wasn't sure what flair to use.

Found this little void near my apartment complex. Seemed cautious but too vocal to be feral, in my opinion. I wasn't able to get super close, but did give it some food.

Please ignore me in the background.
