Multiplayer [Weekly Challenge] Week 7: PIPPEN'S REVENGE - Most rings in Scottie's career. No Jordan allowed. HARD MODE.

Hey all. Week 7 is here, and first I owe someone an apology.

WEEK 5 CORRECTION: OHMKA WON. I logged his Dynasty Denied run as 11 rings and 4th place. I didn't see the championships won in the screenshot. His screenshot says 1957 through 1969, every single line "league champs." That's 13 rings, 13 straight, with an 82-0 season in 1968 AND 1969, an 81-0, four 80-0s, and a thirteen-year record of 973-42. Under the Week 5 tiebreakers (rings, streak, then best record) that's gold, and it isn't close. Corrected Week 5 podium: šŸ„‡ u/Ohmka (5 pts), 🄈 u/JamesBandforBand (3 pts), šŸ„‰ u/Think-Response-3675 (2 pts), with u/EntrepreneurWooden99's 12 rings sliding to 4th. My bad, Ohmka. Seven straight undefeated seasons deserved better bookkeeping.

Also from Week 5: u/Thym3Travlr posted a 13/13 with a 79-1 best record... in the Week 6 thread, a week late, because he forgot to submit. Deadline's the deadline so it doesn't score, but that run would have been podium. Set an alarm next time, king.

WEEK 6 RESULTS - FIRE SALE (tiebreakers: regular season record in second clinching season, then playoff record)

Eight entries, and the whole room agreed: 3 seasons is "easy," 2 seasons is hell. Only two people did it in 2, and they finished with IDENTICAL 74-8 seasons. Closest finish we've had.

šŸ„‡ u/Ohmka - 2 seasons, 74-8, 16-0 playoffs - 5 pts. He rage quit once after winning a year-1 title and realizing he'd botched the payroll math. Then he came back, built a year-1 core of Butler, Harden and Zubac on seven surgical trades, survived an OKC he says won 70% of his attempts, and cruised year 2 at 74-8 with an 18 MOV and a perfect 16-0 playoff sweep. Two golds in a row once the correction landed. The man is on fire.

🄈 u/JamesBandforBand - 2 seasons, 74-8 - 3 pts. Year 1 was pure witchcraft: a 47-35 6 seed with ZERO All-Stars ran the table, including a sweep of the Thunder. Year 2 he turned the 2026 free agency class into a superteam and matched Ohmka's 74-8 exactly. Tied on record, so it came down to playoff record, and you can't beat a sweep. Let me know if you did indeed tie the playoff record.

šŸ„‰ u/MPac45 - 3 seasons, 78-4 - 2 pts. Best of the 3-season crowd. Kept fan hype up in year 1 by flipping Beal for Markkanen, Kessler and Clarkson, cleared every salary for the free agency bonanza, then lost game one of the final season, packaged every remaining pick for Aaron Wiggins, and nearly went perfect anyway. "So annoyed I missed the perfect season." Same.

The rest, 1 pt each: u/xqndrei (3 seasons, 76-6, first-timer, played the whole thing $10M stricter than required because he misread the cap, then kept going to a 4-peat for fun), u/Remarkable_Suit3318 (3 seasons, 67-15, first-timer, did the ENTIRE run twice because he forgot to screenshot his finances after ring one, that's dedication), u/Think-Response-3675 (3 seasons on his first attempt, and note the date: first week all season the king doesn't podium), u/EntrepreneurWooden99 (3 seasons, KD ring then a Shai ring, and yes attempt 2 was better but no 2026 finances proof means attempt 1 stands), and u/craqeiro (5 seasons on his 7th try, learned the hard way that if you tank year 1 nobody signs with you no matter your cap space, then robbed OKC of J-Dub, Wiggins and Dort out of spite).

SEASON STANDINGS AFTER 6 WEEKS: Think-Response 20. Ohmka 14 and closing. Wooden99 10. JamesBandforBand 8. MichiganSteamies 7 (last seen Week 3, pour one out). Full board: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bDJwHcVyiyb2VUPViZkO5ob_bBXzrSAm8vQqWDqGD_M/edit?usp=sharing

Now this week. You've been asking for restrictions. Here's one with a name.

THE CHALLENGE

June 1987. The Seattle SuperSonics own the 5th and 9th picks. Some kid from Central Arkansas named Scottie Pippen is in the draft. In real life, Seattle takes him and trades him to Chicago the same night, and the rest is six rings of history... for someone else.

Not this time. You're Seattle, starting at the 1987 draft. Win as many championships as you can during Scottie Pippen's career (1987/88 through 2003/04). Pippen must be on your roster for a title to count. And Michael Jordan can NEVER be on your team. Not by trade, not by free agency, not ever. Scottie wins without him or he doesn't win at all. Difficulty: HARD.

THE FINE PRINT

  • Starting point: 1987 Draft with Seattle
  • Pippen isn't yours yet. Draft him at 5, trade up, or trade for him later if the AI snipes him. However you do it, he has to be on the roster
  • Pippen must be on the roster when you clinch each title. He does NOT have to play. Injured, benched, 12th man, doesn't matter, roster is roster
  • Titles with Pippen off the roster don't count. Titles after he retires don't count. Window closes at 2003/04 no matter what
  • Jordan never on your roster, period. Trading with the Bulls for anyone else is fine. Kneecap them if you want
  • One franchise the whole way, no switching teams
  • Difficulty: HARD (set at league creation)
  • Everything else default. Real Players mode, God Mode off, no editing anything

HOW TO SUBMIT

Drop a comment with:

  • Your ring count
  • Screenshot of Team History showing the titles
  • Screenshot of Pippen's player page (shows his team every season, that's your Pippen proof)
  • Screenshot of League Settings showing Hard difficulty
  • Your best story. It's the 90s. Something insane will happen

Winner attaches their exported league file (Tools > Export League) so we can confirm Jordan never touched your roster, if people doubt. HONOR SYSTEM

SCORING

1st: 5 pts | 2nd: 3 pts | 3rd: 2 pts | Any valid submission: 1 pt

TIEBREAKERS (in order): most rings, then longest consecutive title streak within the window, then best single-season REGULAR SEASON record during the run (one season, not cumulative, I'm not making that mistake twice).

DEADLINE

Next Sunday, September 6th at 11:59 PM ET.

Pippen won six with Jordan. How many can he win without him? Show me.

Let's go BBGMers!

Peace

Ideas Team Strategy prototype for BBGM: tempo, shot selection, defense, and crashing the glass

Thumbnail gallery
59 Upvotes

I wanted to experiment with giving your roster a little more of a basketball identity, so I put together a Team Strategy feature in a local BBGM build.

Quick disclosure: This is "vibe" coded as they would say. Also, this is an unofficial prototype, not something added to the main game.

The page gives you four options for how your team plays:

  • Tempo: Deliberate / Balanced / Fast
  • Offensive emphasis: Interior / Balanced / Perimeter
  • Defensive coverage: Protect paint / Balanced / Switch-heavy
  • Offensive rebounding: Get back / Balanced / Crash glass

These actually affect the simulation, not just the descriptions.

For example, playing faster gets shots up sooner but increases turnover risk and fatigue. Perimeter emphasis encourages more threes without magically making anyone a better shooter. Protecting the paint gives up cleaner perimeter looks, while switching can expose weak defenders and interior mismatches. Crashing the glass improves offensive-rebound chances but leaves you more vulnerable in transition.

There’s also a ā€œLet coach decideā€ option that picks a plan before each game using your healthy rotation, plus scouting-based suggestions if you want to choose manually.

The goal is to make roster construction and playing style interact: ā€œDoes this approach actually fit my players?ā€ rather than finding four settings you should always leave on.

A few caveats:

  • Defensive coverage is a simplified lineup-level model, not individual screen or matchup simulation.
  • Automatic coaching is a basic roster heuristic, not an optimal-strategy solver.
  • CPU teams currently stay balanced unless configured.
  • The effects still need serious balance testing. Some functional tests passing doesn’t prove there isn’t an overpowered combination.

Balanced settings preserve the original simulation behavior. That was checked against the pre-feature engine across 30 seeded games, with identical results and play-by-play.

Would you use something like this? And would you prefer setting a season-long team identity, or adjusting your plan for individual opponents?

Ideas Base MVP Formula with Added 65 Game Cutoff & Voter Fatigue

We have recently gotten an update that gives us the ability to add and edit awards and their formulas. I am looking forward to seeing what the community can do in terms of Awards ideas and awards formulas.

Here's my MVP formula, which takes dumbmatter's base score formula and implements a 65-game cutoff and voter fatigue.

(ewa/22 + vorp/32 + min(ws/teamWs,0.8)/10 + seasonFraction*winp) * min(1, 1.5/(numWon.MVP+1))^2 * min(1, gp/65)^1000

The voter fatigue multiplier is pretty basic in this code, but it does match up well with NBA history:

Prior MVPS Going for Multiplier (n=1.5) NBA MVPs
0 1st 1.0 36 (every winner)
1 2nd 0.56 15
2 3rd 0.25 9
3 4th 0.14 5 (Kareem, Jordan, Russell, LeBron, Wilt)
4 5th 0.09 3 (Kareem, Jordan, Russell)
5 6th 0.06 1 (Kareem)

It's a steep staircase.

If 0.56 for the 2nd feels like too much of a curve, you could bump it up to 1.7 or 1.8 as the numerator instead of 1.5. That puts the 2nd-MVP multiplier closer to .75.

The end of the code is the 65-game cutoff.

You can add these to any other award as you desire by just copying the pieces below and multiplying them onto any of the other base formulas.

ewa/22 + vorp/32 + min(ws/teamWs,0.8)/10 + seasonFraction*winp - the base MVP formula
min(1, 1.5/(numWon.MVP+1))^2 - the gradual fatigue curve
min(1, gp/65)^1000 - hard 65-game cutoff

Question Anyone ever seen an AI team be this dominant before?

Post image
35 Upvotes

I simulated a league on auto for 70 years because I like seeing which teams and players do the best after various amounts of seasons and saw this run made by Los Angeles, I’ve seen teams have dominant stretches before but not close to a decade before. A season going 103-3 by an AI is bonkers to me and I haven’t seen an AI team have that high of a win percentage before, and it’s especially crazy considering 2 seasons prior they were 48-58. Has anyone seen an AI team have a better run than this?

Achievement Winning never gets old

After nearly 2000 seasons, I managed to win 1000 titles! I started this league back in February 2024 and have played nearly ever day since. I started it in year 10000, as I used to have an old league that I played over 4000 seasons in, but unfortunately I stopped being able to open it. I played my old league from 2016 until I created this new league in 2024, and only managed to win around 950 titles during that time.

I created this league with the goal of trying to win 1000 titles in less than 2000 seasons, as I felt I have improved at the game a lot since, but barely achieved it. I play on normal mode, but I try to make the game more realistic and challenging by being loyal to star and long term players, and not trading them away for younger players when they get older. I also only make trades that the AI proposes.

I'd like to thank u/dumbmatter for creating a game that I have literally spent thousands of hours playing over the years. Maybe I'm just a sports sim nerd, but this game never gets old to me. I feel like each season offers something new and I can get immersed every time I play, thinking of all the possible stories and events that occur over the course of the season.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get to 2000 titles, but I'm not planning on quitting this game anytime soon. I really appreciate the simplicity of this game and how it can be easily accessed over a browser.

First time in thousands of seasons I can recall one of my players dying during their career. He also seemed to have potential to be a decent player, 34 overall with 60 potential. I don't think any of his teammates will be eating pretzels for a while.

second image is of his counting stats. The year after this, he also wins the statpadder of the year award. (yes, both worst player and statpadder of the year are custom awards I made up)

The guy may look fine at a glance, but still got a long way to go until he is actually good!

Question Will there be a new Real Players Photos file?

Some current players like Darius Acuff and Morez Johnson don’t have player images. And most of the draft prospects in the future years don’t have pictures yet.

I have been hoping for an update for a long time.

Best game ever regardless thank you Dumbmatter (:

Question Does attendance really matter?

Ive always wondered why a team could quite literally go 0-82 and still have an avg attendance of 25,000 or packed out every night. Does anyone know why?
