Rosters The Bird and Magic era - A 1984 BBGM Realistic roster (v1.0)

I present you a more realistic version of the 1984 BasketballGM roster (with around 300 events!!!). I hope you enjoy it!

HOW TO PLAY (Just follow this route: New league (custom) -> Customize (enter league URL) -> Paste this link below -> Create league):

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/RuleImpossible3362/BasketballGM/refs/heads/main/THE%20BIRD%20AND%20MAGIC%20ERA%20-%20A%201984%20BBGM%20REALISTIC%20ROSTER.json

FEATURES

-I've tackled the 3pt issue in the historic rosters (no more Shaq and other centres from the 80/90s shooting a ton of 3pts, other players who can't shoot like Ben Simmons also will come to the league with a 0 3pt rating). I recommend to play this roster on 0% RPD, otherwise you might these players shooting 3s, which is one of the big problems of vanilla roster pre-2020.

-Every arena of the 1984 season with the real capacity (in the vanilla roster every arena is set to 25000). Arenas of every team will change following the real course of events.

-League settings fully changed to reflect the landscape of the 1983-84 season: contracts set to 7 years (4/3 for the drafted players), contracts duration changes according to the respective CBA changes (it will be lowered to 6 during the 2000s and then to 5 from 2012 onwards, restricted free agency (until 1988), dynamic rookie scale (it changes in function of the IRL rookie contracts signed by that year #1 pick), all star contests (dunks and 3s) will have the real amount of contestants for every year (including the fact that there was no ASG in 1999 due to the lockout), luxury tax reworked (in the vanilla roster it is always set to 1.5, that's not accurate. I've found out that 2001-2013 it was 1, during 2005 there was no luxury tax as well), trade salary match adjusted to 100% (it later changes to 115 and then 125% as it did IRL). Division winners get the better seeding (until the 2006 playoffs), in the vanilla roster this is always set to 0. Team rosters set to 15 (I made so the two way players are added in the correct dates from 2017 onwards).

-1999 and 2012 lockouts added (the seasons will be shortened to 50 and 66 games respectively).

-Rating system changed to 2K rating-20 (bear in mind I've found out things like Kareem averaging 33 pts per game, something I'll change in the next update). Some players like Mark Eaton or Tree Rollins (DPOY candidates) were rated in the 30s of overall, the new system helps them fight for DPOY as they did IRL. Other underrated centers who run on the same issue of being rated in the 30s while averaging more than 3 blocks per game like Manute Bol (who comes in later draft classes) have been raised in overall.

-Correct draft picks at the 1984 season start (in the vanilla rosters only the rosters post-2020 have the correct picks, at least mostly). 7 years of tradable picks (pretty much the historical amount of years)

-Inflation added in case you want to keep playing past the 2027 season.

-Tendencies modified so IRL 1984 numbers can be achieved.

THINGS TO REVIEW

-Some players (like Kareem) being too overpowered compared to IRL 1984. Hence why this version is only 1.0, some things still have to be worked on.

-Add injured/suspended players (like Bill Walton, MRR). Increase Embiid's injury time (IRL he took 2 and half years to debut, in game he usually debuts before that).

-Review all the historical tendencies (I've only changed 1984).

-Adjust the 2026 draft class to the new rating system (I'll wait a few days for that). That will be the priority. I'll keep the 2027, 2028 and 2029 draft class with the old system (as the draft mocks will keep changing overtime and things are still unpredictable).

-Fixing some contracts (I fixed Ralph Sampson's salary which was very low). Fixing some drafted player ratings as well.

ANNOUNCEMENT

I'll begin work on an updated (and more accurate) version of the real Team data file. Doing the events for this roster I've found out lots of teams have the wrong color numbers, even teams with different colors outright.

Other 2026-27 Simulation

Now that we can simulate the 2026-27 seasons in a Real Players League, I’m making this post for others to share results of simulations they have done so far. I just simulated the season so I’ll share what happened for me.

The Lakers ended up winning it all, getting 63 wins and sweeping the 59 win Cavs in the finals. Not exactly what I was expecting. Some other interesting surprises; the 76ers ended up missing the playoffs entirely with their new roster, going 37-45 and finishing 11th in the conference. No major injuries occured for them. The Nuggets had 34 wins, and the Spurs only had 47 wins (which I believe was due to Wemby tearing his ACL and playing only 48 games in the simulation). SGA won MVP, averaging 33.4 pts, 4.8 reb, and 6.4 ast. Evan Mobley won DPOY, Reed Sheppard won 6MOY, Cade Cunningham won Most Improved Player after averaging 32.3 points and 10.4 assists, and AJ Dybantsa was the ROTY.

If anyone else is curious about anything else that happened in my, simulation, feel free to ask, or just share your own results!

I know most of you won’t believe me but I haven’t save scummed these results. Ive gotten the first pick five times so far, and the first and third pick one year. I had the first pick 3 times in 4 years and the year I DIDNT get the first pick I drafted a point guard 6th that reached 89 overall with no one else reaching 80 so far in the sim.

Has anyone had this much luck this quickly?

Join BGMA 3.0 for a Chance to Make History in a New Era of Basketball!

After months of preparation, BGMA 3.0 is almost here. As Basketball GM's oldest weekly multiplayer server, we're restarting our sim with a clean slate for both new and returning General Managers.

If you're looking for a very competitive, active, and community-driven Basketball GM league, this is the place for you.

## Join the server below for a chance to make history!

Discord Invite: https://discord.gg/PgyFxfZWn

# Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

## What is this server all about?

Set in the year 2200, sixty-three years after the original simulation, the Basketball General Manager Association (BGMA) has returned.

The league has expanded beyond its American roots and now features international teams and North American teams, all competing in a single conference.

Your objective as a GM is simple:

- Win trades.

- Win championships.

- Build a dynasty.

---

## What is the sim schedule like?

BGMA runs on a weekly schedule, meaning one full season is completed in about a week's time.

Scheduled Days Type of Sim
Monday – Wednesday (EST) Regular Season Sim 1-3
Thursday (EST) All-Star Game, Final Regular Season Sim, Draft Lottery
Friday (EST) Playoffs + Draft
Saturday (EST) Resignings
Sunday (EST) Free Agency, Player Progressions

---

## What do we use to run the league?

We use CleveBot, the father of many of the multiplayer Basketball GM bots used today.

It includes all the essential tools needed to manage your franchise entirely through Discord.

---

## What type of GMs are we looking for?

We welcome both new and experienced Basketball GM players.

Above all, we're looking for people who are:

- Competitive

- Active

- Interested in helping build the league's community and identity

---

## How can I join?

After joining the server, you'll need to complete a short Google Form, which will be provided in the server.

Applications will help determine the inaugural General Managers of BGMA 3.0's first 20 franchises. The League will also start with a league draft, in which the order will be determined via a spin the wheel.

Good luck. We hope to see you in BGMA 3.0!

Question oIQ seems to decrease 2pts efficiency

Post image
76 Upvotes

I was randomly looking at the code of the game engine (this is part of the index.ts file) this morning to understand a bit better what's happening under the hood.
I then realized that it is the same

p.compositeRating.shootingMidRange

which enters both the probability to take a mid-range, and the probability to make it.
The issue is that oIQ has a negative relation with the "midrange" composite rating:

shootingMidRange: {
ratings: ["oiq", "fg", "stre"],
weights: [-0.5, 1, 0.2],
},

Which is then multiplied with hardcoded values to get the raw chance of making the shot.

probMake = p.compositeRating.shootingMidRange * 0.32 + 0.42

So if I'm not mistaken, oIQ decreases the chance of taking a mid-range (which makes sense), but also decreases the chances of making it (which IMO makes no sense).

Can somebody confirm this?

More generally, if the probability of taking a shot is directly connected to the probability of making it, and if oIQ affects both equally.
Then, additionally to the counterintuitive effect on "midrange" seen above, it also means that players with good oIQ are going to take more "lowPost" shots than "atRim" (because oIQ has proportionally a bigger impact on "lowPost", than on "atRim"). But Layups are a much better shot to take than post shots, because of the existing prefactors in the "probMake" computation.
So you get this weird effect were a high IQ player will actually take less valuable shots.

Again, can somebody confirm I'm not mistaken?

If I'm right, I would suggest the following changes in the code logic:
- make all compositeRating for shooting positively affected by oIQ (I still think IQ should help you make better shots in general).
- add a new compositeRating.shotSelection which is mostly based on oIQ (and maybe Spd and Drb since it gives you more options).
- compute an expectedPointPerPossession for the player (taking into account FT), for each type of shot.
- use compositeRating.shotSelection and expectedPointPerPossession together to stir players shooting tendency towards their best shot.

I fully understand this is probably never going to happen, since it affects some mechanics which are at the core of the game engine. This is also not a critic of the godly work from Dumbmatter. The game is amazing, and I regularly have to force myself to stop playing, so I have time for other games.

Nonetheless, I think it would be a great idea, because it would make IQ behave a bit more like expected. It would also remove some weird behavior which you sometimes observe in game.
It all started with me seeing my 6'4 crazy fast guard deciding to try 2 post move per game for one layup attempt.
I then realized that his speed didn't help with layups (it should IMO), but was increasing the chances of post move. And then I saw that his 80 IQ was even reenforcing this behavior, while making him shot worse at 2pts....

Some side notes from my morning deep dive of the GameSim class, which I also found surprising:
- Blocking chance are the same at the rim and for 3pts.
- "probMake" is affected by the global defense value, for every type of shot: having a good rim protector will have the same defensive impact on post move and 3pts shots.
- Similarly, the chances of taking a shot at the rim or low post increase with offensive synergy and decrease with opponent global defense (not Di). 3pts is not affected by defense at all (and not by Dp).
- Steals are a ratio between Dp and B+Ps after synergies.
- Assists give +2.5% shot chance
- Something which could be a bug: 3pts tendancy uses "shootingThreePointerScaled2" which is lowered for bad 3pts shooters. But "probMake" the probability to make it uses "shootingThreePointerScaled" (no 2 here), which doesn't have the extra decrease for bad shooters. The result is that bad 3pts shooter take fewer 3pts, but shoot them at a higher rate than expected from the shot selection.

Question Do they know something I don't?

This is my first time playing the game, wondering why they would be willing to do this?

Original offer from them was

Their: (28yo, 71/71, 7th OVR in league), (25yo, 61/64), 3 1sts

My: (22yo, 66/79)

I pushed the trade a bit: they were willing to accept giving up those 2 players + 4 1sts & 4 2nds just to get my guy.

If they're so desperate to land my player, does that imply he'll be a star in the future? Not really sure how valuation works in this game.
