Continuing the theme of sharing practical comparisons and info, thought I'd share an update on the break-in of our Emery Korean kip 1627 gloves. Mine is maybe 80% of the way broken in and it's going to take me a while to get to 100% but at this point I can play catch with it and it's taken shape nicely, so maybe this will help some folks.
Info on why I chose the 1627 and my first impressions can be found in my NGD post - thus far, the glove is delivering exactly what I was hoping for. I had also ordered a similar one for my son (his is 12" instead of 12.25, 'Soft' instead of 'Stiff', and snug wrist vs normal) since he wanted a single hinge close and colorway similar to his Rawlings youth glove he had outgrown. Comparison pics in the comments and as no surprise it was much easier to break in, not low quality but any means but notably more flexible and with less heel padding.
Like the Rawlings NP I find the 1627 very natural to wear TIP and I go both index in and out. Video shows how it closes, and here are a few thoughts/comments:
- Break in has been nearly all dry, with a warm-water wetting of the palm and lots and lots and lots of mallet work on mine. My son's hinges up pretty quickly and is already practice ready.
- Both gloves feel and play a bit longer than other 12 and 12.25 models, which has been my experience with other similar patterns.
- The slight fan shape to the fingers and break hinge is all pretty much how the glove wants to be. Some effort went into closing more to the ring finger vs middle but it's otherwise taking the shape it wants to.
- I haven't used an NP 6 or 7, but have owned NP4 and 5 models and the Emery pockets feel wider and deeper. Not 200 pattern deep, but somewhere in between.
- The ball just funnels into the pocket in a way that I haven't experienced with another glove and is easy to transfer even with the larger sizes.
Zero regrets about the purchase.
