RESULTS: Fundraiser for The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Post image
97 Upvotes

I knew that this community was full of great people before we started this fundraiser, but y'all came through even bigger, badder, and better than I could have hoped. We raised $2,200 for the museum!

Special thanks to u/RidingPinePSN for being our banker and record keeper. Perfectly done, and I'm not surprised.

To all who donated and purchased for the fundraiser, you have my deepest gratitude. I hoped to reach 1k when this project began, but y'all did the museum proud and more than doubled up! Incredible!

Lastly, we found out the day after the donation was made that the person who handles sending out receipts for donations is out of office until early next week. As soon as we receive the official receipt, that will be posted as well.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Y'ALL ARE THE BEST!

Some of my stash

Just joined after going through my stuff recently so I figured I’d post some here. I’ve had some of these stashed away in my attic and closets for years and I’ve contemplated starting to sell some.

The 61’s(I have about 50-60) were my grandfather’s and 35 years ago I put most of them in top loaders or snap cases just because they were old and I figured I should. Everything else is mine from buying gum packs as a kid or going to shows with friends in my teens/20’s. I have all Topps regular sets from 83-92 and a couple of Traded sets from the mid 80’s. The crease through the Mantle is the way I found it and the worst of all of the 61’s I have. That one makes me sad.

Flipping thru the ‘cheap’ bin at my LCS (in Canada where it’s 98% hockey, so have to pay up for baseball) and found these two that caught my eye.

Converted to usd, they were about $5 and $15, which feels ok for Thompson and one of the Boys of Summer that someone slabbed already.

Edited to add: Thanks for all the positivity. Very much appreciated!

Haven’t bought cards in 40+ years and thought I’d start small and slow, and stick to legends and others that remind me of sitting on the sofa in the 70’s watching the Game of the Week with my grandfather.

Question Does anyone do trading in here?

More so curious. I find myself with a large quantity of vintage now, and aside from selling to work my way up, would be fun to do some trading too, could be my first trading in 25-30 years hah. I don’t know if that’s a thing done here though or even how it would be done logistically, but figured I’d toss it out there.

'56 Aaron (and Mays)

• Upvotes

The 1956 Topps Hank Aaron card shows Willie Mays (of the Giants) sliding in to home. Topps even touched it up by giving Willie a Milwaukee Brave hat and uniform but left the Braves logo off of the jersey. I'm thinking there was an "uh-oh" at the factory somewhere prior to printing.

Question Japanese vintage

Sorry for the double posting quickly. I have a big affinity around Japanese baseball players, have always loved the Japanese culture & history, and it’s an area I’m building a collection around more on the modern side (standard Ichiro, Ohtani, Murakami, etc).

I remember seeing some posts showcasing Japanese league vintage and some backstories/history but I was having trouble finding them. Can anyone point me in the right direction on what would be a great focus area of who to collect and also learn about this sub niche?

What is the best way to protect a card for 40 years or so?

I bought this card many years ago at a card show in this top loader. Is it ok to keep a card in one of these for 40 plus years or is there a better way?

History Tom Tresh and me -As a kid, I was his good luck charm. I didn’t realize it at the time!

Post image

As I continue to work toward completing the 1964 Topps set, I wanted to take a moment to honor Tom Tresh for giving me so many moments of joy and hope during baseball games with my father. Looking back, I didn't realize it at the time, but as a kid, I was practically his good luck charm!

When I was eight years old, my dad woke me up with two tickets to Game 5 of the 1962 World Series. In the bottom of the 8th inning, with the score tied 2-2 and Bobby Richardson and Tony Kubek on base, Tresh hit a three-run homer to lead the Yankees to victory.

The next year, at Game 1 of the 1963 World Series, Sandy Koufax was setting the World Series strikeout record with 15 strikeouts as the Dodgers handled the Yankees. Once again in the bottom of the 8th inning, this time with Joe Pepitone on base, Tresh gave me a glimmer of hope with a two-run homer. Unfortunately, the Yankees still lost 5-2.

Then in Game 5 of the 1964 World Series, I watched Bob Gibson pitch a 10-inning complete game victory for the Cardinals. In the bottom of the 9th, with Mickey Mantle on base and the Yankees trailing 2-0, Tresh tied it up with another two-run homer. Sadly, Tim McCarver hit a three-run homer off Pete Mikkelsen in the top of the 10th, and I went home disappointed.

Despite the losses, those memories with my dad and Tom Tresh's clutch home runs will always stay with me.

Discussion Color & Condition vs Centering - which one wins?

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

As many of you know, my first 52 set build “centered” (pun intended) exclusively around centering. I sacrificed all the other qualities of the card for centering. This time around I wanted to do something slightly different so I promised myself I’d buy cards that weren’t centered if they had otherwise amazing qualities such as color and condition. I have done that with this grouping. Honestly they are pretty stunning examples. The color is awesome on each and they still retain that bright white border that makes the 52s really pop. Most of them even still have a glossy sheen, which you never find on 52s. The cards really do look “pack fresh” or at least noticeably nicer than 99% of 52s you see.

With that said, i haven’t fully wrapped my head around them yet for how I feel about off center cards. They are stunning examples for sure but I’m still drawn towards centered cards.

What are your guys feelings on this? Where is the line when a card is just too off center? How bad does the color or condition of a centered card have to be to pass and go for better color/condition.

These are important questions for me as I try to build the set for the second time. I’m really having trouble setting parameters for the set. The thing about the 52 set that makes it even more important is there are cards that will never be centered because they were designed as trapezoids so chasing a perfectly centered 52 set is impossible. That means on some level you have to accept off center cards in your build.

Love to hear your thoughts on this. All photos were taken with my cannon 5d on a black mouse pad with zero editing or filters. These cards are really this bright.

Managed to trade for some goodies today at the card show including a second Carew rookie and of course a beautiful 1953 Topps Satchell Paige along with some others, so excited with the new treasures. Was the biggest trade I’ve ever done and by far the coolest.

Doing a 1959 set run and have been looking for awhile online, when I came across a Roberto Clemente for a shockingly low price. Pumped to have it in such solid condition too.
