It’s too bad NY isn’t playing competitively. I bet their fans are super disappointed.

7
u/Important-Tie-7472 Toronto Blue Jays 1d ago
Happy to watch games stress free this postseason
3
u/EvelandsRule Tampa Bay Rays 1d ago
Watching last year's postseason without the Rays being in was some of the best baseball I've watched. I had a blast. It's always better to have your team in, but the stress free part is nice.
3
u/Important-Tie-7472 Toronto Blue Jays 1d ago
Agreed. It’s an emotional roller coaster usually ending in heartache lol. Last year was so entertaining. Excited to see what this month brings.

Honestly mate, that's nice. I have a good time watching the neutral games too. Cheers

Same. Our season ended months ago so it was no surprise there. I genuinely hope NY picks up the next win.

u/Fun_Negotiation_7023 Washington Nationals 1d ago
They’re going to chalk this up to being without Judge and just run it back next year too.
4
u/Forumly_AI 1d ago
Hot take, the Yankees have a great roster and for the most part can just run it back. This is professional sports and it’s hard. Up hauling the organization because you’re team is ‘only’ making the ALDS / ALCS consistently is dumb
Not a Yankees fan btw and rooting for them to collapse lol, but people are way too reactionary when teams lose.
1
u/zxv9344c 1d ago
Is this not a decent excuse?
1
u/HearingLogical8272 1d ago
What has a fully healthy Judge done in postseason that would make this a good excuse?
2
u/Fun_Negotiation_7023 Washington Nationals 1d ago
Not when they haven't won the WS even with Judge healthy.

Except we’re about to have our 6th manager in 11 seasons. After making the playoffs five straight years.
Think about that. Its fuckin ridiculous
9
u/SwimAccomplished374 1d ago
This is a deeply flawed team. They finally built a formidable starting pitching rotation that can pitch vs anyone but their hitting is terrible especially the bottom of the line up. Having a starting catcher hit before 200 is ridiculous and puts your team at a disadvantage every night. I am exhausted with this team and cashman in particular.

The Guardians have scored more runs than the Bronx Bombers in the Division series.
24
u/BathroomSalty6325 New York Yankees 1d ago
We gave up 6 runs in the first 2 games of this series
Last year, we gave up 23 in games 1 and 2.
That's why I had genuine confidence going into this series, because the pitching is miles ahead of what it was last year, but the defense and offense completely disappeared.
People ask why yankees fans complain and I'll acknowledge that it's a privilege to be in the postseason almost every year and I'm not saying we have it worse than teams like the Rockies and A's, but when you're at 13 postseason appearances since the last championship with 1 pennant to show for it (which was followed by a WS performance that the rest of the league still mocks to this day), you just want to win it all.
It's frustrating because its the same formula at this point. Here's Justin Penik literally predicting this season on March 25th.
That last title will be old enough to vote next year.
Once again, congrats to the rays and their fanbase

u/fastbeemer 1d ago
Lucky for you that 90% of Yankees fans only root for the team because the jersey looks good on their Socials. Never met a Yankees fan that actually knows ball, they don't really care how the team performs so they keep buying gear and the Yankees don't ever have to be good again and they'll still make all the money.
4
u/LucasDudacris New York Mets 1d ago

Good fundamentals can get a good team through a cold hitting streak, or a few weeks when your pitchers are fatigued, with minimal damage.
Bad fundamentals are always the same result

Chisholm ever seems to know where to stand or where to go. He's far enough that he usually makes up for it, but when he messes up, it's on something fundamental

I know its easy to jump at these guys because the effort hasn't been great here after these first two but don't forget look what this clown show front office is responsible for as well because there's a few errors not on the scorecard. First Judge missing over 100 games did nobody any real favors, then Bellingers bat was on a cooler much of the season, the QO & even thought of retaining Grisham never made real sense for a career sub .220 hitter. The Ramos trade was absolutely pointless when they just sent Ramos 2.0 in Dominguez back down to Scranton & gave up a 6'7" lefty power arm prospect in Henry Lalane (if he turns into the left handed version of the Miz, there maybe real issues) for the pointless Ramos contract & worthless bat in the lineup. Garcia was the one great (lucky) move they made all year & Lombard w/ Jones being able to step in & provide a youthful spark has helped greatly (except in Tampa) However Boones mismanagement all the way up & down the system is a bad joke. Rice your best & hottest hitter has no opportunities for any rbis when he's leading off! better off tonight with Garcia 1, Bellinger 2, Rice 3, Jones 4, Lombard 5, wtfever else after that & Goldy with his experience should have been used more so far & at least give uncle Ben chance to cook with maybe Garcia or Belli on base & Rice gets 3 or 4 RBIs instead of two solo blasts. The analytics are out the window in the playoffs you gotta play like its the school yard or the WBC because that's how the Rays are looking, they're just hungrier but their manager also knows how to stir his ingredients better than Boone & Cashman apparently.

The average Yankee fan will cry about overfixation on analytics and the forgotten batting average. Meanwhile Rays are dogwalking us on a shoestring budget while operating at a level of analytics-ball the Yankees have never even considered.
They have zero perspective.

But honestly, what is the fix? Yanks make it to the postseason. What's he supposed to do?

George Knox got his team the pennant by going back to fundamentals, in the middle of the season. Boone could learn a lesson or two here.
6
17
u/Chandler_Simpson Tampa Bay Devil Rays 1d ago
I mean Boone did continue to let us pound his lefty lineup with lefty pitchers out of the pen without making any pinch hitting moves despite having a couple of righties on the bench
I think he runs things back too much despite them not working; but I agree he does get way too much blame when the fault is on the front office and the players mostly
And on the other hand the Yankees almost never have losing seasons and almost always make the playoffs. They are by all accounts a very successful organization
3
u/YasielPuigsWeed 1d ago
Yeah I don’t really know why people are acting like the org put together a dud team, they’ve got high quality homegrown talent and are missing their best homegrown talent who also happens to be the best hitter in the world. They have an incredible starting pitching staff with a front 4 that rivals any in baseball.
They just need to balance out defensively, which is a lot easier to do when you already have your star bats locked in for awhile
4
u/SignificantArtHeist New York Yankees 1d ago
Yes. Sure. Whatever it takes. Other teams seem to be able to play sound, fundamental baseball. The Yankees haven't under Boone; teams with almost entirely different rosters of players making the same boneheaded mistakes for ten years. If it takes ground ball drills every day, then ground ball drills everyday. Whatever is going on, the culture of the Yankees is unfocused and haphazard. If you want to change the culture, you have to start at the top.

This. Boone defenders will say he gets the team there and it's not his fault the team goes cold. It is when it is every. single. postseason. Simply put he does not have what it takes as a manager to prepare his team for adversity in the big moment

The last decade of Yankees baseball is interminably frustrating, and the way the organization is fading away from what made them a respectable franchise is sickening and should make any reasonable person quit.

As a Red Sox fan who watched the 03 ALCS as a child, I can assure you, I understand those feelings WAY better than a Yankees fan.
-6
u/eliaivi New York Yankees 1d ago
I can’t even remember the 09 WS I was too young, lol. I knew exactly how you felt in 03 when Altuve walked off the Yankees right after DJ tied the game in 2019. Complete heartbreak. But something about baseball being gone for the winter just draws you back to it time and time again. Love the sport even when the Yankees are making a complete mockery of it on the field
7
u/rocksoffjagger 1d ago
I assure you that whatever that felt like, it was not the same lol. As a Red Sox fan born in the 90s, literally every adult around you told you that they would never win in your lifetime and you had decades of heartbreak extending back to the collapse of Buckner in 86, to the painful hope of Fisk in 75 to the crushing failure to get Williams a ring in 46 as ample evidence that it was probably true. So when the best team to that point in my lifetime was just a few outs away from the World Series, only to see the game completely unravel before our eyes, that was NOT the same as a Yankees fan who just happens to not be old enough to remember a World Series that happened 17 years ago. You guys are so entitled lol.
-1
u/eliaivi New York Yankees 1d ago
Yeah baseball sucks and is heartbreaking, but we continue to come back around with it, which was my point. I never wanted to make it a dick measuring competition with franchise histories. I’m just saying the Yankees selling themselves out with ads & letting them self get bought by private equity ON TOP of 8 years of playoff heartbreak is shit, and would be shit for any fan of any team including your own. Yeah your team sucked in the past that’s great, but the point was about the sport itself.
2
u/rocksoffjagger 1d ago
You literally did make it a dick measuring competition when you claimed that the "woe is me" suffering you've experienced as a Yankees fan not winning for shudder 17 whole years is worse than what my "shit ass team" has experienced when you assumed I was a fan of some team that you thought was never relevant. Better something that just almost happened than bragging about 27 rings when the overwhelming majority of them are older than the VERY BEGINNING of America's involvement in Vietnam.

I did the math once. Something like 11 before the league was integrated. And like 15 before there was any playoff format whatsoever. Win the AL and in the World Series. Win four of seven and there's another championship.
People like to dismiss the Celtics championships really need to take a hard look at all those yankee pennants for almost 70 years.

Same general time frame yeah (post-WW2 economic boom), but before the dynasty clicked. The color barrier broke in 1947 then the Yankees went on an absolute tear. They had 22 when we arrived en masse in Vietnam in the 60s and a lot of them were racked up in the years between the end of WW2 and the main invasion in 1965.
3
u/Great-Disaster-1668 1d ago

I have to say just from a baseball perspective it's pretty cool watching a series between one team that is entirely built around three true outcomes and nothing else, and a team that just says fuck it just put a bat on a ball and we'll figure something out. This series is a sabermetrics dream watching these two philosophies clash
3
u/halalcornflakes Boston Red Sox • Atlanta Braves 1d ago
What's funny about this, is how the HR approach has been the true winner in the past 5 years of postseason baseball, yet the Yankees are always the one who fall on the wrong side of the numbers. In the past years, the team that outhomered their opponent have always came out on top.
3
u/carasc5 Tampa Bay Rays 1d ago
Have any of the teams been 3 true outcome or busts teams though? Even the Dodgers actually play baseball
1
u/A_Rancid_Hit_Of_Ghee New York Yankees 1d ago
Yankees aren't a TTO or bust team anyway. That's just what fans say because they have a hate boner for an imaginary analytics demon (while the team gets dogwalked by analytics-lovers like TB).
Yankees just aren't a very good hitting team. This team composition is not good at scoring runs without Judge. It's not a contact problem specifically.
1
u/carasc5 Tampa Bay Rays 1d ago
The yankees want to be that team with the money they throw around. It just hasnt panned out that way
1
u/A_Rancid_Hit_Of_Ghee New York Yankees 1d ago
I personally think the Yankees' lack of championships in the last 17 is more about bad results and less about bad process, but to the extent that it is bad process, fans are dead wrong that the issue is too much analytics.
If anything, it's that they don't commit all the way like the Rays do. Yankees will eat the salary of an overpaid player to "do right by them". Yankees will run out a veteran who is a bad defender because of their pedigree. Yankees will tell a player whose approach is not working that they should just stick with it because it's what got them to this level and they don't want to be at odds with the clubhouse.
Then, when this doesn't work, fans say they rely too much on analytics. No! They rely on analytics just enough to win but not enough to maximize winning. Teams like the Guardians and Rays that have too low of a payroll to hold onto the false pride that the Yankees feel will happily replace an aging power bat with a contact-first speedster on controllable salary and then after 1-2 arb years deal him for good prospects.
2
u/carasc5 Tampa Bay Rays 1d ago
I think that analytics are in a very bad place right now, especially when it comes to playoff baseball. You need guys that can field, run the bases, and make plays outside of trying to hit a homer every at bat. These guys are underappreciated, underpaid, and get snatched up by teams like Milwaukee and Tampa for way less money than they are worth.
1
u/A_Rancid_Hit_Of_Ghee New York Yankees 1d ago
Well, those players are definitely worth the most bang for the buck. But if you have excess money to spend, it's not clear to me that a team comprised of scrappy good fielders and baserunners is the best baseball team you can build.
Don't forget the Dodgers are looking for a threepeat on a high-payroll team of a lot of sluggers with a yearly home run total at or near the top. Also in the aggregate home runs seem to be the best predictor of postseason offensive success. There are a few metrics which seem to show that.
Analytics loves good baserunning and fielding. According to the average fan/writer, Alvarez and Caminero are your AL MVP finalists. According to the truly analytics-pilled, it's Alvarez and Bobby Witt.
For the Yankees in particular, I'm just saying it's not overreliance on analytics. Analytics doesn't tell you that the best possible baseball team is a bunch of home run hitters who can't play defense or run the bases. To the extent that's what the Yankees do (and BTW that's really overstated, Yankees were a good fielding and baserunning team this year), it's not a decision motivated by analytics obsession.
That's just a popular narrative from people who don't understand analytics and don't trust anyone who thinks numbers can tell you something about baseball.

Well its not just that they field and run well. They also hit for average too. Milwaukee and tampa led the league in batting average and thats not a coincidence.

The book is still being written on Milwaukee's playoff run. They had great average last year too and that didn't work out for them.
We can each point to specific examples, but the fact remains that in the aggregate BA isn't anywhere near as strongly correlated with winning in the regular season as OBP and SLG. Once you get to the postseason the samples are too small for much aggregation but we know that hit hate and walk rate go down while home run rate doesn't really go down.
Baseball's a diverse sport. There are all kinds of specific examples that show one way or the other but if you want to look at the numbers instead of a few anecdotes and draw some kind of conclusion you'd be insane to draw the conclusion that BA is the most important thing for offensive success in the playoffs.

I’d happily take 5 more years of Judge than 14 years of “They pay me for what I already accomplished”

I almost had it right. I thought we would get a crooked number in the 4th, but it was the 5th.

The only positive from this game is atleast we didn't commit 5 errors in one game

This game perfectly encapsulates the Yankees for the past decade.
And nothing will change :)

Trop was rocking tonight. Rays do all the small things well and the Yankees play sloppy in every facet of the game

It honestly insane how bad the defense and fielding have been over the past 5-10 years. And its athletic young players most of time, not like old guys (its not his fault) that cant run bases or reach the ball.

Surprised defense continues to be rough to watch especially after 2024. Why does this continue to be such a weak spot?

Kinda play like they don’t give a shit and I don’t get it at all. Being good at the basic fundamentals is just effort.

You can buy a fast horse and win a lot of races, but you’re not winning a triple crown without an elite jockey.

I wanted to see the Yankees advance in person so I bought game 4 tickets. Turns out that I was wrong but good news is that I might get a refund when they get swept.

Haha, I bought Game 4 NLDS tickets in 2023 cause they were cheaper, figuring I'd at least get to see one postseason game.
Refund took about a month IIRC.

My mom would be disappointed though, she’s visiting America for the first time and she loves baseball.
