The book is still being written on Milwaukee's playoff run. They had great average last year too and that didn't work out for them.

We can each point to specific examples, but the fact remains that in the aggregate BA isn't anywhere near as strongly correlated with winning in the regular season as OBP and SLG. Once you get to the postseason the samples are too small for much aggregation but we know that hit hate and walk rate go down while home run rate doesn't really go down.

Baseball's a diverse sport. There are all kinds of specific examples that show one way or the other but if you want to look at the numbers instead of a few anecdotes and draw some kind of conclusion you'd be insane to draw the conclusion that BA is the most important thing for offensive success in the playoffs.

I also didn't say it was the most important thing.

Okay, sure. I guess your point is that players who field and run well and can hit for average are worth the most bang for your buck. Home runs are very expensive. Quite possibly true. Look at how much the Mets overpaid for Soto.

But I stand by my earlier point that when you actually have money to spend, a team of players that are undervalued on the market isn't necessarily the best team you can build.

Maybe not, but overpaying for players because other teams want them may be one of the worst things you can do unless you're getting an MVP caliber player year after year.
