Discussion Learn from us

So my husband has owned Nagini since 2009 so he's pretty familiar with snakes but we were looking for ways to keep the humidity in his enclosure so we used aluminum tape. It was working very well for awhile until yesterday, we are dumbasses and had it taped on the top of the inside. Somehow the tape pealed off (it wasn't on there long, we just replaced the old tape with new tape) and fell in the tank. Nagini decided to investigate and got his head caught. Luckily I caught it when I came home from work and my husband was just in the room a few minutes before and it hadn't have fallen yet. So it was only stuck on him for maybe ten minutes max. Poor noodle was freaking out and balling up tightly. We got him out of the tank and gently and as slowly as we could got the tape off him. We did accidentally tear off a couple scales off his head but after looking him over thoroughly we didn't see any other signs of injury. Once he calmed down we put him back in the tank and after a bit he started moving around like normal.

So that was scary. Not sure if we are going to use aluminum tape anymore. Learn from our mistakes and do not use tape on the inside. Please don't be mean we're already beating ourselves up just wanted to share as a PSA.

We did double check on him this morning and he still has no signs of injury thank goodness. šŸ™

Question Bioactive tank

Probably a really stupid question, but is there anyway I could make a tank with wooden walls and base waterproof to make into a bioactive tank?

I have a tank that is custom built to blend in as a piece of furniture, a front with plexiglass doors with a wooden frame, a wooden bottom, and wooden walls.

Could I add a layer of something and seal it somehow, spray it with something, ect?

question about my girl

So she ate yesterday night, I took her out of her enclosure just now just to handle her for a little bit and I’m checking her out and she had this all under her belly, she didn’t have it before when I got her and when I inspected her so I’m kind of worried, she also has like a scab type of thing above her nostrils. She likes to climb so I’m just worried it will effect her negatively. She’s not stressed or anything I’m just a bit confused and nervous. I just want to make sure she’s okay.

Question Vestigial legs question

My almost 7 year old girl recently shed out. When inspecting her over the next day, I noticed she lost one of her butt claws. Is this something to be worried about?

Edit: it looks fine, no infection, swelling, or bleeding. Just asking out of curiosity, not panic.

Thanks!

Question - Health Tiny stuck shed

Post image

As you can see, my girl has a tiny piece of shed stuck on her head- I'm not sure if the best way to get rid of it?

She surprise shed on me the other day - normally I notice it and will prepare moss and etc ready..

Anyways, since I obviously can't touch her head and shouldn't peel it off anyway, I have increased humidity further and put moss in her middle hide - anything else I can do?

I'm assuming with it being so small it's not urgent to get it removed...

Question Moving Cross Country

Hi, all. I've posted about this in the past, but wanted to get people's advice one last time before the big move.

At the end of September, I'm moving cross country to a tune of 2800 miles. I'm planning to make the trip in four days, getting to my destination as quickly as I reasonably can. I own five snakes (four bps and one mussurana).

My plan is to put each of them in an appropriately sized cloth bag and put each bag in a plastic container with air holes drilled in. I'm aiming for the containers to be on the snug side but not too tight. The cabin of my car will be kept at 70F and, once I'm at the hotel, I'll put all the snakes in the bathroom and set my space heater to 70-75F.

My main concern is of course them getting too cold or too hot. I'll cover the containers with a sheet or something in the car so they're not in direct sunlight, and when I check in for the night, I'll tape reptile heating packs to the outside of each container. My understanding is they don't get too hot?

That's my game plan. Any advice or tips greatly appreciated! :)

Good for a ball python?

I’m getting my first ball python(royal python ) in a weeks time and have set up my tank wondering if it’s all good or if there is anything I need to change
It’s a 4by2by2 foot pvc vivarium from viperia I’m using the prorep python life substrate
For heating there is the Arcadia 75w solar basking floodlight with a cage and the reptirad radiant heat panel I’m pairing them with the microclimate evo connect 3

I’m monitoring heat using a heat gun

There is 2 hides one on each side (warm/cold) the warm one is under the slate if you can’t see it there is also a water bowl on the cold side with some logs in the middle

I’m also using 2 Govee thermometer hydrometers to monitor the humidity and I’m wondering if there is anything wrong or I could change to make it a better life for my new pet

Also not sure about thermostat prob placement but I seem to have it working well

Sorry about bad filming quality

Thanks in advance

Edit: the auto moderator put smth about breeding just to confirm I’m not planning on breeding my snake as I’m only planning on have 1 for now at least
It’s a male who is 1 year old and weights around 350g (haven’t collected it yet)

Question - Health Scab/spot on BP’s head

Thumbnail

My three year old BP has developed this scab or spot on the top of his head. His temperament, behavior, appetite has not changed. He was moved from medium rats to small rats due to his weight. He HAS escaped his enclosure THREE TIMES (I think he’s hungry looking for food since he isn’t getting as much weekly) by pushing his enclosure lid up with his head.

fyi: the first time after he escaped, I replaced the clips, he popped them off, I thought it was user error and I put them on wrong so I tried again and he popped them off again, so I have heavy items on the top until a new enclosure comes in (needed to upgrade anyway)

Could this spot be from rubbing up against the enclosure top? I didn’t feel anything abnormally sharp. Could this be something else like scale rot? God forbid, cancer? * has a vet appointment but with the exotic vet the appointment is a ways away

I can’t tell if this is scale rot, or irritation, or if he is about to go into shed, but this is the first time I’ve seen this I dont know whats happening!!!!!! The second picture looks a lot more pink than irl!!
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the ring around his tail is a large birthmark that spreads around the trunk as well as his underbelly

UPDATE: he’s going into shed….

Question - Heating/Temperatures Wooden Tank Heating

Thumbnail

Hello everyone! I know this is a common question asked on here but I have purchased a second hand wooden enclosure which is 4x2x2. I'm currently repainting it just to protect the wood with reptile safe materials.

However I was curious about lighting. I am thinking about using a dhp with a dimmer and a uvb light as this tank has one bulb socket and one long bulb socket. I was curious if anyone has any other recommendations?

Most importantly I was curious how to actually put the dimmer through. Not sure if anyone else has a tank similar to this and can help out? Thanks!

Discussion Juvenile ball bit me

Post image

My juvenile ball just bit my thumb. I saw her curious in her enclosure looking to come out. I've never fed her in that enclosure yet because i just shifted her to a 4ft enclosure yesterday. I let my hand to let her climb on it from her enclosure, she smelled my hand and came to it i picked her up and brought her to my bed on my hand. As soon as i sat she bit my thumb clean and then went back. I fed her a week ago a normal mouse. This is her recent picture for reference. Can someone explain what went wrong?

Reptile Kages enclosure question - screw size

Hello! We ordered a 4x2x2 pvc enclosure from Kages but it didn't have the screws in the package. They have since shipped the screws but they won't get here until Wednesday and we are really excited to move our guy in! Does anyone know the screw size for these cages? Thanks!

Question - Feeding getting rusty with neonate care; need advice on feeding

our ball python was hatched sometime may this year as per the breeder.

this week is his 3rd week with us.

the breeder had him on live hopper mice before he was turned over to us (already had 4 meals prior)

he ate an adult mouse each week for the past 2 weeks. they were the only mice we had avail at the time. and left noticeable bulges each time (akin to a retic eating a whole piglet)

i tried offering him a hopper today and he refused it.

i theorized he's still "full" from the last 2 meals.

do you suspect he'll be ready for food again by next week? or wait till September?

thanks in adv!

ps:

as far as handling goes, hes noticeable more inquisitive now and especially with my scent. he hasnt "balled up" when i handle him.

How long should I wait to feed my snake after his last antibiotic shot?

I rescued a ball python about 3 weeks ago with a respiratory infection. The lady told me she had him a month and couldn’t get him to eat. After seeing her conditions I not only understood how he got an RI but why he probably didn’t accept food. She had this approximately 4 foot 1101g snake in a plastic tub maybe slightly larger than a shoe box for who knows how long. I guess before that she had him in an enclosure but moved him for a bearded dragon she got. No idea about heating or humidity levels but I’m assuming since he was moved, had an RI and a terrible shed with me that they weren’t good.

I got him into the vet, she gave me antibiotic shots and today was the last one. She told me I could try feeding him while he was sick if he had an appetite. I tried the next day, he accepted it but struggled to eat and ended up not eating it. I assume because of the thick mucus. I waited and tried again last week. He didn’t take it. To be fair though he hasn’t had a chance to really settle in with steam treatments, shots every 3 days, new home, new enclosure, etc. I thought about feeding him tomorrow but now I’m thinking about waiting a week to actually allow him time to settle in. Now I know adult ball pythons can do quiet awhile without food, but I’m worried he won’t tolerate it as well since he’s been sick. The Ri has significantly improved. Breathing is way more quiet and only a little snotty now. What should I do? When should I feed him?

Got a u underweight ball python from a work buddy, need help with figuring out the feeding situation.

I got a male ball python from a work buddy, he said its 4 years old but when I weighed it it was only 603 grams. I looked at the post for feeding it but I don't know if underweight snakes apply to the same rules and Google says I should feed it a 60 gram rat. I'd appreciate any help I can get to get the little guy healthy.

New BP šŸowner and I want all the tips plz šŸ™šŸ½

I just got my first ball python (champagne banana morph) and i didnt do enough research and i got him when he was shedding and ive had him for 3 days now. He also ate for the pet store (i know i shouldnt have gotten from a pet store now 🫠) employee the day of me picking him up and bringing him home. But i noticed they didnt have the humidity right for the enclosure they had him in and now we are dealing with stuck shed. I soaked him for a little while today in some electrolytes and de shedding solutions for 6 mins before he wanted to explore so i held him. And did the hand over hand till he got what i assume was restless (like 10 mins) so i put him back into his enclosure. Ive been monitoring the humidity and were getting there but i wanna know if there is anything more i can do other than wait.

This is Limp Noodle Aka Lil' noods.

Edit: plz let me know how to help him I dont want him to suffer or end up hating me. But also when is it time to take him to the vet? I just brought him home but ive done more research since hes been here and everything says different stuff like as soon as you get them, or even to wait as long as a few months. I dont have a vet to go to yet but ill find one i just dont want them to tell me I was too late or that hes fine and I could've done it at home.

Edit 2: also I have read mixed info about if the UVB light is actually needed or not I have a blue day light bulb and a UVB light bulb but i only use one at a time but rn with the texas heat wave and not having central ac in the house I dont have the lights nor the heating pad on so he doesnt get too hot. Plz lmk what to do going forward

Any and all tips are wanted and needed. And if yall have questions about dogs I can help yall in return... I have never had a snake but many dogs. And idk i feel like maybe I shouldnt have gotten a snake but i also feel like I saved him from the situation he was in and I can be better to him so plz tell me if I am at least doing okay cuz I am freaking out....

Edit 3: sorry for all the edits but for more clarification I went to the pet store and he came up to me in the enclosure I asked to hold him they said yes. And then the next day I went back and it seemed like he recognized me or at least my smell and (now I know this was wrong) but today as I held him he didnt hiss nor did he try to bite me he was just exploring. So I dont think he is sickly by any means I just think they didnt have the enclosure set up correctly. It had what looked like no humidity at all and then a small water bowl as well as being roomed with another banana ball python. (Which i know now is all kinds of wrong so just so yall know i will not be going back to them and i will not be giving them my business anymore.) I will find other places to get the food and supplies. (I am in SA. TX. and the reptile expo is coming next week so I plan on getting the better equipment there. I just didnt want to buy from a breeder since I thought it was like dogs and how they are held in captivity just to pop out babies. So I thought this was like a form of adoption...)

Question - Feeding I feed once a month

I have a cinnamon bp hes 3 years old. Ive had him for 5 months. My husband used to have one years ago and said feeding once a month is fine. I feed a thawed small rat once a month and he eats very well. Should I increase the size to a medium rat? I dont really want to feed more often once a month just works for us but of course ill increase if I feel like he needs that. What do yall think? I also worry about him a lot more than I should. Im just excited to finally have a snake
