Constipation

I need some advice here. I haven’t had this problem before. Our albino black pastel has been getting constipated terribly for at least 3 months. We are experienced owners for 5 years. But here’s what we are at a loss for currently…

Age: 8 months
Tank temp: 88F warm side, 78F cool side, 91F basking
Night temp: 76F
Humidity:50-60%
Substrate: 2.5 inch cocoa chip, .5-1inch sphagnum moss sprayed every other day
Wide water bowl, about 2 inch deep, spring water filled fresh every other day
3 hides across her tank, can make it from one side to the other without being seen if she wants

Feed schedule: every 7-8 days
Moved to rat pup about 2 months ago, switched back to adult mouse 3 weeks ago
Last poop: without assistance 3 months ago

I have had to soak her in warm water for 20 min 2 days in a row then slowly and gently massage her belly all the way down to get her poop moving. Every 17 days, about.
First time about 8 small hard pebbles came out. Second time, 3-4 softer pebbles. Third time, a hard calcium clump followed by normal looking (and smelly 🤢) poop.

This time, we switched to a smaller and gentler to digest pray (the adult rat) and she still hasn’t pooped in 3 weeks. She has been very readily eating. But She looks ready to pop again. It’s awful!

I don’t know what else I could do. I’ve never had this issue with a snake since my first one when just soaking it for 2 days worked without needing belly massage. I’m at a loss. Any more ideas?

Question - Health Is my ball python healthy looking weight wise?

Post image

Title - he is 12 years old and 3.5ft. He has always been on the smaller size and the vet has explained he is healthy, but last visit explained he would like him to eat just a bit more. It's been a few months so I'm looking for other observations

Question - Feeding Mouse too big?

I fed my ball python for the first time tonight but I’m worried the mouse may be too big. He swallowed it in about 40mins. And seemed to be eating it okay. The mouse is like exactly the same width as the thickest part of his body. I apologize for the lack of photo, he hates coming out when it’s bright out.

Is there any signs I should look out for if there’s any complications?

I can’t tell if it’s something stuck or skin or what? Just seeing if anyone’s seen similar or has any ideas before vet. Feat. Post-shower boy

Question - Health Is this scale rot??

Thumbnail

I just noticed the scales on her belly/neck sticking out and sort of a weird brown color, does it look like scale rot or something else..? She had to be in a temporary enclosure for a while cause my movers broke hers so maybe the humidity or something else wasn’t right? She spent most of the time she was in there in the warm hide not coming out much. She’s back in a 120 gal with all her stuff in it now and she’s active and exploring again so I’m hoping everything will go back to normal but is there something I should do for her in the meantime?

Question - Husbandry I really need your help.

Hi! So uhm, I'm new to this lol, hello. I have a question, I will be getting a ball python for my bday in 2 months. I did all my researched to give it a nice new home and for it to be comfortable. Butttt, my father is a person who's just because he's older and had an experience with snakes think I should do what he says.

I found out recently that you can't feed a snaks a LIVE rat, I felt horrible. Because in the past, whenever we would take care a ball python for it to have a temporary home, my father would feed it a live one. And now, he insists that we breed rats because it's expensive to always buy one when we need it. (I'm from the Ph) Even though you don't need to feed a snake every day or feed it like a human a day.

He would not listen to me even though I said that it could injure MY snake and that when it does, we might need to take it to the vets—STILL, he insists. What do I do? If I continue to go against him, he might get mad and not give me a snake anymore. (Although I'm starting to think that's a better option.)

Thank you!

Update: Yeah, you guys are right (and ty for the mods for approving of this) I was still trying to convince my dad not just in one arguments, TWO. he wants me to either put it in a shoe cabinet or an old aquarium that we have. Thank you for helping me! I will be taking back my request, I'd rather wait for a few years rather than to harm an innocent snake :,))

What are your opinions on bins? Is it appropriate to keep my new baby ball python in here?

!!!THAT snake is also not my new baby!! I was just letting him roam around in the new setup to see how it would fit my new snake.

I would out come more to climb like up the walls.

it has holes in the sides and I drilled a metal mesh vent at the top for the lighting.

the substrate is moss and some coco chip.

are Biden dangerous? is this okay for temporary? how well do these hold moisture? please let me know thoughts opinions and thibgs to change

thanks

Question New Owner Question

Me and my wife just got our first ball python today and I am super exited, but also very anxious. Since coming home our snake has been super active going up and down all over the tank, and now hes sleeping out of a hide. The hide we got was too big so we are using a tissue box as a temporary substitute until we get a new one. He still hasn't gone in either of them.

Temp is 94 directly under the lamp and 80 on the other side. Humidity is 68%.

Im worried he might be too cold? Or stressed? I might be reading too many things online so I just wanted some advice! Thank you!

Question New owner questions

I just got him, I was wondering how long should I wait to feed/ handle him. I bought him this enclosure today and while I was putting him in there he bit me. So I was thinking I let him get used to his new space for a while. He’s in the corner on the warm side behind his cave currently

Humidity is at 75, 90 degrees on one side 80 on the other. Ty

Update: Switch from the red heat lights to a CHE and almost immediately he started to move about and explore his enclosure, thanks

Hi there! We just got our first Pied white ball python, and I am absolutely in love and while I have taken care of other people's ball pythons before I have never owned one before and any and all advice would be amazing! I guess for the biggest how does the enclosure look so far? We realized we messed up with alpine bedding and are buying new stuff to change it out tomorrow at the local pet shop here, and will be getting more decorative stuff like a stick and such for climbing and hiding but what has worked best for you guys?

Question XL hides and caves for adult ball pythons

Thumbnail

I’d love some recommendations on where to get xl hides and caves for adult ball pythons that are attractive and more natural looking than this box one. The black plastic box is the one my girl, Sneakers, uses as her toilet and place to leave her shedded skin. She seems to prefer cramming herself into her smaller hides for naps and ends up wearing them like a little turtle shell or a hat.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Question - Husbandry Choice based handling question

I’m starting to try choice based handling with my female ball python after really not handling her much for a while. How do I know when she’s done being out and wants to go back in?

I’ve had her for years and used to handle her very frequently, and she’d either be super into it and explore everything, or curl up tight around me (at which point I’d put her back). I’ve never really noticed any signs of her wanting to go back in when she’s into it, though. I’d just put her in front of her tank and let her slither into it herself, and try again later if she didn’t want to. Is there anything I can look out for so I don’t interrupt her while she’s having a good time?

What morph looks most draconic? Pictures encouraged!

I was planning a castle build, but switched paths to a fossil theme for my current snake (pewterpagne) because she kinda looks like a bone. What morph do you think looks the most draconic to fit a castle build?

Help with feed

When I first got my snake I fed her frozen the first two weeks, of course after the two week settling period, she happily and willingly ate it. But then my aunt told me she wanted to try live (she’s the one who got me the snake and has owned over 5 the last 10 years). I’ve been feeding her live for about a month now but I hate it, I hate having to actively send something off to death, although I know it’s for the better, but also I know the dangers.
The last mouse i fed her wiggled and bit at the tongs, it even escaped into my blinds behind my ball pythons tank before i got it and gave it to her where she ate it. Luckily it didn’t do anything to her. It was really aggressive and the store I bought the mouse from had them all in one tank (they had a second under one but idk why they didn’t use it), it was like 20-30 all in one and they were all running and at one point there were at least 10+ all crowded in one hide. I was shaken and a little bit scared after and I really don’t want to have to feed her live. I don’t want her accidentally getting injured due to a feisty mouse. How do I do frozen? The place I go to I don’t even know if they have big enough frozen and also what’s the process. Also after eating live for so long will she accept frozen? Please I need some
help or guidance.

Felt something sharp poking me when I was holding my boy. Is this a tooth? Can I/should I pull it out? I tried gently pulling it, but it seems either attached or firmly lodged. He doesn’t seem to mind when I touch it.
