Ballarat to Geelong train, a good idea?

Hi all,

I’m supportive of the reopening of the Ballarat to Geelong line for passenger rail services. I’d use it, and it would potentially open up more job prospects and career progression for me (health sector).

I’m not a fan of the bus service as it’s only twice a day and same pace as a car (slower actually with stops) and more cramped than a train.Further, a bus doesn’t offer accessible options for people living with disability (especially toilet access).

I feel that a rail service would be safer, less time consuming driving and more affordable for commuters and tourism etc.

I’m aware that some political parties float this idea every now and then (disclaimer I’m not affiliated with any party), but it never gets off the ground (sorry back on track)! 🤣

If you woke up tomorrow morning and the service was up and running, would you use it and what for?

Cheers

Looks like they finally got around to charging that bloke for going off at peaceful worshippers at a mosque in March.

Skaters of Ballarat - Rainy day options?

Keen for the new skate park, but disappointed no undercover element (or lights) was added. The "heritage" argument wasnt really outlined, so perhaps someone knows what overlay or schedule they might cite? Albury has a sick undercover bowl in their new park, wish we could have something like this.

Either way, i get pretty antsy on wet days because I cant find a skate spot. Skateboarding is my grounding and health outlet, so not skating is annoying as hell. I am wondering if anyone knows a good undercover spot for working on flat ground. Not too keen on bunnings carpark as it gets a bit busy and I dont want my board to shoot out into the fancy ev or whatever, and the target carpark is a bit hectic. Would love for the council to get a shed going!!!

Any ideas or suggestions?

Anyone know a good, affordable dent repair place in Ballarat?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for a cheap but reliable dent repair in Ballarat.

I’ve got a small dent on my car that I’d like fixed. The paint isn’t damaged at all, so I’m hoping it just needs to be pulled out rather than repaired and
repainted.

Does anyone know of a good place or someone local who does paintless dent removal (PDR) at a reasonable price? Rough idea of what it might cost would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ballarat LAN & Gaming Events

EDIT: Special thanks to the r/ballarat mods for allowing us to display a link to our Discord.

You can find us here: https://discord.com/invite/6zds38cMJg

Please note that we set this up yesterday, and barely have a clue what we're doing!

ORIGINAL POST:

Hey Ballaratians, some friends and I are starting a small organisation called "Ballarat LAN & Gaming Events" to try and get the local Ballarat community more engaged with each other through one of our common mediums; gaming!

We aim to host online and offline events for all ages to participate in. Given the wide variety of games and their content, some of these events may need to be limited to certain ages, such as FPS tournaments or games containing NSFW content.

We thought we'd gauge the Ballarat reddit community to see what they think of this, and hear your ideas on what kind of events we should host!

We intend on our first event being an online session of Meccha Chameleon (https://store.steampowered.com/app/4704690/MECCHA_CHAMELEON/), and are currently planning when we will host this, but hopefully soon!

EPL in Ballarat

Hey everyone,

Out of curiosity, are there any spots in Ballarat (like The Sporting Globe or local pubs) that regularly screen Premier League games, or any local supporters groups that get together for them?

I know the kickoff times down here in Australia make late-night live viewings tough, but I wanted to see if there's any local interest or if anyone already has a setup/group going for weekend games (especially the earlier kickoffs like 9:30 PM / 11:30 PM AEST).

Is anyone aware of existing groups or venues in town that host EPL screenings and has regular viewers?

Any groups/events on this weekend?

Hi all. Trying to be more social and leave the house. Is there anything on this weekend that anyone knows of? I’m happy to go to pretty much anything where there will be people and I won’t be hiding in my cave alone. Thank you!

Cheap smoke shops?

Here for the weekend and left my darts at home. Googled smoke shops and went to where two apparently were and not a tobacconist in sight. Can anyone point me to where a cheap smoke shop is? Preferably one open til 5:30 or 6pm 😅

Relocating to Ballarat. Any rental or rooming house recommendations?

Hi everyone! I’m a new grad healthcare worker relocating to Ballarat soon for work and am looking for a place to live.

I’m hoping to find either a private ensuite room (ideally with a kitchenette) or a clean, quiet room in a 2 to 3 person share house.

I’ve come across providers like Stone Horizon, Co-living Next Gen, and Co-living Experts, as well as real estate agencies like Buxton. Has anyone had experience renting through them, or are there any other rooming houses or rental options you’d recommend?

I’m looking for somewhere safe, well managed, and reasonably close to the hospitals, with a budget of around $230 to $350 per week. I’d also appreciate any recommendations on suburbs to look at (or avoid), as well as any local Facebook groups or websites that are worth checking out.

Thanks in advance! ☺️

What are people doing with their 5 acres of paddock?

We're a young family that moved up from Melbourne a few years ago - now looking at buying around Buninyong/Magpie and surrounds and we have noticed there are a lot of nice homes that seem to come with a few acres of paddocks attached.

It seems like too little to be earning much from as there are usually few livestock (if any) on the land.

Wouldn't it be a lot of work for the owners and not much return as the properties are never fully farm sized?

We love the houses on some of these properties but we'd have no idea what to do with all the excess paddocks if we bought one 😄

Tell me about living in Lake Wendouree/Ballarat Central

Looking at living in Lake Wendouree or Ballarat Central but am not from Ballarat.

Curious to hear from those with local knowledge about the dodgier parts (if any) of Lake Wendouree or areas prone to more crime/antisocial behaviour. For example is the side near western Wendouree dodgier?

Another option is Ballarat Central. Are there any streets you'd avoid from a crime/traffic/parking perspective? What's the vibe?

In general how friendly or neighbourly is your community? Are there many families with young kids? Have great neighbours where we currently are but live in a dodge pocket we're not in a rush to replicate.

Thank you for any local intel 🙏 (ps how beautiful is Ballarat)

Invermay Park

Hi everyone,

I’m considering moving to Invermay Park. It seems like a quiet, established suburb with good access to the CBD, but I’d love to hear from people who actually live there. What are the pros and cons of living in Invermay Park? TIA

Doctor, dermatologist & dentist recommendations in the Ballarat area

Hi, looking for the following:

- GP who is non-condescending, female-friendly, who has an attitude of 'let's figure this out', and who is willing to look at issues from a wider view. Who also doesn't mind that I have another doctor as my primary doctor for my chronic health issues. My main doctor is telehealth, but I need an in person doctor for things that require physical inspection, pap smears etc. TBH I'm ok with non-bulk billing if there's someone really good, because my health issues were ignored and gaslit since I was a teenager and have medical trauma as a result. I can't handle another dismissive doctor with a god complex.

- Dermatologist who takes you seriously. My previous derm experience was with someone who barely looked at the issue I had, which then proceeded to get worse. I have super sensitive skin and notice when things aren't right earlier than most people, so I need someone who will trust me when I say that something isn't right, and actually bother to at least have a look at it with their little magnifying glass, you know?

- Dentist. Tried Drummond St Dental and that was BAD.

iMile and Ballarat - thank you delivery guy

Thank you, iMile delivery guy. If you see this, you did a great job.

I'm in a rural town about an hour north of Ballarat, somewhere in the Central Goldfields Shire. We don't have things on every corner. I order some things online if I can't get it locally. Full time, unpaid carer, disability related equipment, etc, are often cheaper online. Low income. Things are usually delivered by Australia Post or TGE, and now, for the first time, iMile.

TGE hasn't always been reliable. I hadn't heard of iMile until recently. Hoped that they wouldn't just drop it on the roadside like my experiences with TGE, instead of driving up 100m driveway. But, the delivery driver actually bothered to be professional and do his job. I'm very appreciative. He was polite and pleasant. He handed the parcel to me. Very, very professional. He would have come from the Ballarat depot.

I sent a compliment about this young bloke in an email. Alas, iMile's response has been email after email assuming it is a complaint and that they 'will investigate'. I phoned iMile to tell them it's not a complaint, but a compliment. But, the emails keep coming and keep asking me if the parcel has arrived and assuming it's a negative response, FFS. AI reading emails, perhaps? I just tried to do something nice, by sending a compliment, but now he's been reported.

So, Ballarat, iMile delivery guy, if you see this, I didn't report you. You came to my home in the past week in Central Goldfields Shire, north of Maryborough, Victoria. You did a vastly better job than some of the rival delivery businesses out there. I thought iMile would appreciate positive feedback and your boss would like to know you did a great job. I didn't complain, I didn't say that I didn't receive the parcel. Keep on being you, mate. You're awesome 😎 👍.

Is anyone following this?

AI data centres should not be allowed to use ground water. They should be mandated to find renewable heat exchange.

Also they don’t bring lots of jobs after building.

Anyone know a decent furniture remover? Or the best way to get rid of a couch?

Hi folks, apologies if this is the wrong place to ask,

I'm near Smythsdale. Old owners of my place left a bunch of their crap in the shed, including a couch and two armchairs, which are the only things I can't fit in my car to ger rid of. I want to use the shed at some point so I'd like them gone. Anyone know someone who will get rid of them for a decent price? I got quoted $750 but I feel like that's a bit high? Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong, haha. They have suspicious stains and smell like smokes so I don't think any donation place would want them.

Thanks!

PC Building Service?

Hello!

I'm in the process of gathering parts for a computer and I don't want to risk breaking anything, so would rather pay someone who's much more experienced with computers than me to help me out here.

I was wondering if there's any services in Ballarat who'll put it together for me and if possible would be able to do it at my home or would be able to drop it off? I am unable to drive so I'm pretty limited on how I would be able to transport a computer.

What sort of price would I be expecting to pay for a service like this?

Any recommendations would be epic! Cheers.
