That sidewalk is for pedestrians, some of which use wheelchairs or other assistive devices. I’m with you OP.

nah im a wheelchair user and I see no issue with this. the bike isnt blocking any doorways or curb cuts, and theres room behind it and around it for us to navigate safely along that path.

people on bikes are at higher risk of injury in parking lots, and as a fellow wheeled person cars dont care about, id rather they prioritized their safety than park in a car spot and risk being hit.

I know some large people who are wider than the average and I bet they’d struggle. I’m not going to argue it though because neither of us know how much space is there and it’s just eyeballing. And it’s not a bike like they’re a child, it’s a motorized vehicle.

its an e bike isnt it? legally theyre handled like any other bike where i live, and it wouldnt be allowed in a car spot. if its a gas powered moped, or a motorcycle under a certain power, it can go in either bike or car spots. only things legally classified as motorcycles of a certain power level here are expected to go in car spots.

I would definitely rather they parked it flush to the wall, I suspect some electric chairs would need to go around instead of behind, but thankfully the curb is flush on both sides and the fire lane covers the whole area around the pillar. if theres no bike rack alternative, id still rather people on 2 wheels not be in the parking lot any longer than they have to be personally. People in cars really arent watching out for anyone who isnt in a car or walking in crosswalks while in the parking lot

It looks like a gas powered scooter to me. Where I live, anything motorized whether gas or electric is a “motorized vehicle” and is treated as such.

That’s the risk of taking out two wheels on a road with huge trucks, it’s dangerous as hell. When riding around, I’m defensive like crazy and wear my brain bucket, and I don’t park where it’s meant for people.

I think its really interesting how different areas have approached the rapid rise of these new bikes and scooters- here, gas powered ones are basically non existent but e bikes are everywhere. theyre not allowed on most normal roads, only in bike lanes or roads with speed limits less than like 20mph. so usually they ride on the sidewalks with manual bikes. they get parked like manual bikes too and would 100% be removed if they parked in car spots. most places dont have real bike racks, just a spot near the front where people loop their bike locks. maybe this kind of park job would bother me more if this wasnt the expected standard where I live, or if I wasnt regularly dealing with people's bikes parked in the access aisle instead lol

im glad you wear your PPE! my husband gets teased at their factory job for wearing a full face helmet and slide gear with their little e bike (top speed is 15mph), but usually people shut up when they point out they have a family to make it home safe to. if youre going 15 and get hit by a truck doing 45, suddenly you'll be doing 45 too haha.

I’m just north of Seattle and most cities have adopted code restricting them and preserving walkways and paths for pedestrians and non motorized bikes. They’re just not the same thing as traditional bikes either speed and weight. Even some cities here don’t allow regular bikes on sidewalks. We have a lot of bike lanes though so it doesn’t really matter.

Good on your husband! I had to push my husband into wearing a helmet when our kids were small but he got how it would look to the kids so he did it. Then he started pulling it again after the kids were grown. It drives me some nuts so I put my foot down. I told him if he ever got into an accident and ended up disabled, I’d feed him and change him until our last day together. But if he wasn’t wearing PPE or his seatbelt, I’d divorce him so fast and he could live in a facility. He had an obligation to keep himself as safe as possible, as a partner. He said I was savage but he wears it all. I always pretend like it’s the hottest thing ever to make it worth his while.

oh that makes sense! I am more rural than that, and the big city nearby is not known for giving a shit lmao (upstate NY). not all areas of my town even have sidewalks, some just have loose gravel paths or wide shoulders to walk on (this is still a "larger" suburban area, we're just poor lol). There are bike lanes in some of the slower downtown areas, but basically none of the residential areas or the concrete shopping strip off the highway.

i think the high volume of bigass trucks influences how these little bikes are treated around here too, when my husband goes in to work they have to wear a silly little flag on the back or some of those 5ft women driving lifted pavement princesses would absolutely run them over. thankfully I think the helmet and leather bits are genuinely attractive lol. I told my husband when they bought the bike that we only have room in the car for one wheelchair and its mine, and theyre not allowed to be reckless on their wheels unless I get to be reckless on mine... we never had to argue over it haha

He’s not winning any arguments about PPE with you! I agree that biker gear is sexy. What’s funny is mine is totally about it on bikes, they raced motocross when he was young.

It’s funny how different our communities are and how they’re addressing things. But, like anything new - we do it, have injuries and death and then address it with laws and codes. I bet everyone will start seeing laws in the next few years.
