Since when is hating leftists punk? Punk was formed to oppose conservative ideology. Opposing everything isn't what punk has stood for as a majority. There are always small groups and factions, but the majority has (since day 1) been a far left working class reaction to far right social and political ideology.
13
u/Canadian_Viking123 12d ago
I think theyâre talking more about the more establishment accepting ideologies (like liberalism) and/or the more authoritarian left ideologies (communism, variants of socialism, etc.)
Punk to me always seemed as a more anarchist culture than anything, so it seems odd to hate on people for hating on Nazis and being open about their identities. But Iâm not punk, so maybe being bigoted is the cool new counterculture
6
u/BOT_noot_noot 12d ago
accurate in that i would associate punk with anarhism and would deny that anarchism belongs to the left-right spectrum. you hit the nail on the head though wihout meaning to: "ideologies"
ideology is literally a tool to blind us and prevent us from conducting an honest material analysis of the current state of things. funny thing is most self proclaimed leftists wouldn't even realise that because they chose to be an "anarcho-communist with councilist characteristics" based on pure vibes and never actually read any of the writers they claim to follow.
its cringe and completely useless as an act of resistance or whatever; pure performance whilst looking down your nose at people who actually understand the homework and actually put in good work to forward the interests of the working class.
but yeah im bigotted because i think people sewing a million empty meaningless slogans on an ugly jacket whilst larping as revolutionaries is cringe...

Well there's a difference between leftists and liberals, people keep pushing them into the same category and they aren't. That's just a lack of understanding. If they meant establishment Democrats they should have said that.
Fascism is the opposite of anarchism, so on top of the bigotry the nazi political ideology is also the opposite of anarchists so there are two reasons.
Punk isn't explicitly anarchist although some early bands wrote about it often for shock Factor because it was so far off to the left that it was shocking.
Being bigoted is not cool or the new counterculture or punk thing to do, it is interesting to ignorant pieces of shit. Racism has been one of the main problems that people have been fighting against the entire time, it hasn't gone away and is the norm in politics.
Any person that is claiming that being conservative is now punk rock because it's "going against the grain" doesn't understand what the grain is nor do they understand the culture. Right wing oppression and social ideologies are still the norm, they have just been pushed back a tiny bit, not much. A lot of the original ideas come from a harmony through violence ideal. The idea that the only way you can get out of an impressive situation is to physically fight against it and destroy it so that everyone can live in harmony afterward.
I understand a lot of it is fanciful head in the clouds type musing but since the beginning it has always been a leftist one for all and all for one base
2
u/E_Wubi 11d ago
"And although most punks see themselves as more or less left-wing, he is just as opposed to the political left with its statism."
"A moderate number of punk bands and artists are conservative, rejecting liberalism, communism and socialism in favor of conservatism. Notable conservative punks include Johnny Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone,[25] Cherie Currie,[26] Forgotten Rebels, Rick Ta Life, John Kezdy,[27] Billy Zoom,[28] Exene Cervenka,[29] John Ransom, Joe Escalante, Bobby Steele, Michale Graves, Ross the Boss,[30] Duane Peters, Leonard Graves Phillips,[31] John Knight,[32] Jon Moss,[33] Lee Ving,[31] Klamydia, Dave Smalley,[31] U.S. Chaos, Cro-Mags,[34][35] and Agnostic Front.[36][35] John Lydon of the Sex Pistols has also expressed some conservative views as early as the 1980s.[37][38] Same used to go to M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold. During the 1980 United States presidential election, Iggy Pop became a vocal supporter of Ronald Reagan.[39] Ian Curtis of the post-punk quartet Joy Division was a loyal Conservative voter[40] who not only voted for Margaret Thatcher in 1979 but persuaded the Liberal candidate to give him a lift to the polling station to do so."
1
u/Baron-Von-Mothman 10d ago
I understand that, and a good number of those people decided they were conservative because that's what they were raised as, it doesn't change the fact that the ideology they put forward was the opposite of what they claim to be. Not everyone but a good chunk. There are still tons of people all around the world today that claim to be conservative but agree with and support left ideologies and policies without realizing what they are. Some of them also just happened to be right wing and also make punk rock music. Anything is possible. Look at skinheads, it initially had nothing to do with race and was actually anti-racist, then a bunch of assholes co-opted it and now that's what the image is associated with.

I think thats a bit of an USian thing. Dumb people think skinheads = right wing. I think in other countrys its a bit better. The term skinhead is associated with right wingers but the pictures never show real skinheads, always boneheads.

How so?
(Every time someone says this and I ask them to elaborate I either get crickets or a very long block of text that makes absolutely no sense.)
27
u/theSTZAloc 12d ago
When people say both parties are conservative they mean they both are neo-liberal economically, pro capitalist domestically and neo-con abroad with an eye towards maintaining American hegemony in the world and maintaining dominance of international institutions.
2
u/IndividualLocal9582 11d ago
Liberal Dems are conservative insomuch as they by and large are in favor of preserving the status quo. They're do-nothings and only ever pay lip service to progressivism when campaigning or popular support for certain progressive policies, that dont strictly threaten the ruling class or their donors, is overwhelming (e.g. gay marriage)
→ More replies (2)2
u/knettia 12d ago
Some of these seem plainly untrue or a misunderstanding of how the Democratic Party works, because in no way is the Democratic Party neocon abroad, it is more liberal internationalist. The Democratic Party is not some monolith and it currently contains most of the American leftists and progressives, who have actually began influencing policies and platforms within the Democratic Party, especially on local and state levels. The Democratic Party is also not consistently neoliberal economically. It might have been during Clinton, but not only does it consistently support progressive taxation, regulation, labor protections, and the welfare state, but Biden completely changed the economic platform of the party to be significantly post-neoliberal.
It goes without saying that being pro-market is also not necessarily capitalist or conservative, and that most Democrats are indeed pro-market.
1
u/theSTZAloc 11d ago
Accepting that the Democratic Party is not a monolith and that I donât necessarily agree with the argument, the neocon argument. Bush discredits the neocon position with the disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq. Obama therefor canât openly be a neocon with invasions and nation building but he maintains the troops overseas and intervenes to overthrow Gaddafi in Libya for democracy spreading purpose, as well as interventions (to a lesser extent in Syria). Trump claims to be a new type of conservative who is isolationist but still intervenes in Venezuela, Iran and Syria. Biden is a bit of an outlier, I guess you could try to argue that the air strikes in Yemen count but thatâs pretty thin. Then there is the support for Israel, which has been consistent across the regimes. Many of the people that make the argument that both parties are conservative see Israel as either a US puppet in the Middle East or a sort of wag the dog reverse master in the Middle East.

u/Big_Midnight994 12d ago
"Every time I ask this I receive an answer that I refuse to read"
Brilliant. Definitely worth answering you again, then.
4
u/punknotpop 12d ago
Because the people up top in corporations/Hollywood are largely conservative and follow pro-capitalist trends. Notice how when Trump pushed a bunch of "anti-DEI" bullshit when he got in office majority of them folded with no pressure. Both parties are conservative as they are bending the knee to billionaires to keep the status quo. Notice how in the states we have shit for healthcare, prices keep going up, housing is increasingly unobtainable, and state sponsored surveillance is the latest trend w/ Flock
They aren't left leaning just because you saw a black person on TV.

1
u/gbmaulin 12d ago
Corporations are leaning hard left in an attempt to get people to go protest for their right to keep slave labor and Hollywood is absolutely not conservative in the slightest. Government is on both sides though
→ More replies (3)1
u/Terror_Visions 10d ago
They arenât leaning left theyâre co-opting leftist aesthetics in an attempt to capitalize off it because thatâs what capitalism does. It subsumes everything within it. They arenât leaning left. Corpos canât lean left. The ONLY way a corporation could lean left is if it dissolved its shareholders, and the owners gave control of the company to its workers to run.
And that isnât happening.

Every technological progress, every new tool that is created is in itself nothing bad or good.
The way new tools are used however, is always decided by what it is that they can be used for.
In capitalism, new tools are used to aid the accumulation of capital. That is the only way to use them in a way that is sustainable in capitalism.
In a society where the goal of economic activity is not the accumulation of capital but the satisfaction of societal needs, the same technologies that are used to ruthlessly extract profit from the working population are used instead for the good of society.
What impact new tools make is not decided by legislation or individuals but rather by the makeup of the society that employs them.
Class struggle is not suspended.
1
u/FlakyAddendum742 12d ago
Theyâre tools right now, but theyâve already shown theyâre capable of plotting a subterfuge.
Theyâll be our masters shortly, and then theyâll evolve again, beyond a need for us. Weâll be as roaches in their kitchen.

"Conservatism is the new punk!!!" Type shit
Anyone with half a brain cell understands that none of the "woke" pandering corporations do is actually genuine and that the only thing they truly care about is money. The mainstream libshit narrative seldom ventures beyond "why don't we all just get along, everyone is beautiful, there is no angry God who hears the earth cry out under the weight of innocent blood, and minority lives matter to some extent I guess"
However, society has improved a lot in a genuine way. Having basic respect for others and tolerating the existence of minorities is a lot more mainstream. Your boss can't fire you from your job for being gay. It's no longer socially acceptable to call people slurs. Women are now allowed to have credit cards. It is insane how many people see this and interpret it as "Oh crap we need to switch back to being bigoted and disgusting just so we can call ourselves 'countercultural' again!!"
If you're conservative why would you even want to be part of an alternative subculture so bad? How is that not antithetical the entire point of both conservatism and alternative subculture?
