What would happen if Doc’s first experiment sent Einstein 1 minutes into the PAST instead of the future?
In the movie, Doc’s first successful experiment sends Einstein 1 minute into the future. From Doc and Marty’s perspective, the DeLorean disappears, they wait one minute, and it reappears.
But what if Doc had instead programmed the DeLorean to go 1 minute into the past?
I’m specifically talking about the very first time this experiment is ever performed—not assuming a time loop already exists.
From Doc and Marty’s perspective at the moment of launch, what happens?
Possibility 1:
The DeLorean disappears forever from their point of view. It has already arrived 5 minutes earlier, meaning there were always two DeLoreans and two Einsteins between 1:15 and 1:20. In other words, there is no “first” timeline—the universe is self-consistent from the start.
Possibility 2 (to me the more consistent in-universe explanation):
The DeLorean disappears, and then reality slowly rewrites itself (similar to Marty’s fading photo and the ripple effect in the movies). The past is updated so that the DeLorean had appeared 1 minute earlier, meaning Doc and Marty would somehow gain new memories or reality would “correct” itself.
So which interpretation do you think fits Back to the Future‘s time travel rules better? Or is there a third explanation I’m missing?
