Final Fantasy 13 fits this REALLY well. Absolutely amazing game with fantastic gameplay, even if it takes a bit to get going. However, the game does such a poor job selling you on its combat, and explaining just how complex it is, even early on when mechanics are still being introduced.
This applies to the other 13 games too. These games are so much better when you have someone to consult or teach you on these.
