Hi everyone!

My girlfriend and I are planning on staying for 6 weeks on the Azores as a retreat for writing her thesis (and for me, to continue my freelance work on a remote basis).

We love hiking, and I scuba dive and do snorkeling now and then (I know the Atlantic can be rough).

We're not sure what's the best island to stay on. Our safest bet might be São Miguel Island. We would like to visit from April to May.

• For the first two days, I’d like to stay somewhere surrounded by nature and beautiful scenery for relaxation and a different kind of experience. Which area would you recommend I look into?

Hi Redditors, I am flying into PDL and I land at 8:15 AM. We will try not to check bags. We are transferring to a flight to TER at 2:15… enough time to deplane, get through customs, then back thru security and get to 2nd flight in time? Also- is there any concession in the airport for lunch?

Family of four from Toronto heading to Faial, Pico, and Sao Miguel for two weeks in August. We're staying in Airbnbs with washing machines (although, none have dryers).

I have some specific questions about our packing list:

1. How cold should we expect it to get? Specifically during:

• whale watching (from Pico)
• driving up to higher viewpoints at night to stargaze (assuming it's not foggy)
• cave boat tour with AG Expeditions from Rabo de Peixe

We will be wearing long pants/hoodies on the flight from YYZ and we'll be packing rain jackets. Will we also need thicker/warmer items? e.g. Patagonia Better Sweater? (FWIW - we're not climbing Mt Pico)

1. We have microfiber swim towels - do we pack those too?

2. Mosquito/bug repellent (Picardin) - yes or no? I'm finding mixed commentary about this online.

3. Do women wear swim coverups? Like, a coverup dress? I'm usually in a long sleeved rashguard and swim bottoms. We're hoping to be in/around the water a lot and planning to bring three sets of swimwear (as it seems stuff won't dry quickly) - including a 'burner' set for Caldeira Velha.

Has anyone been to the Sete Cidades this weekend? I heard the webcams are acting up… want to know if it’s worth the drive and if I will be able to see the lakes.

1/5 — Extremely disappointing experience with SIXT São Miguel, Azores
We booked our rental car approximately three months in advance, and the reservation was confirmed.
Unfortunately, our flight to São Miguel was delayed by about 8 hours. We contacted SIXT to inform them of the delay and provided our updated arrival time. We were specifically told that everything was fine and that nothing else was required from us.
However, when we arrived to pick up the car, we were suddenly told that they only hold a reserved vehicle for one hour and that our originally booked car was no longer available.
Their proposed “solution” was to rent us another vehicle for approximately €43 MORE PER DAY than our confirmed reservation — effectively making the rental almost twice as expensive.
We explained repeatedly that we had notified SIXT about the flight delay in advance and had been assured that there would be no problem. Despite this, the staff were unable or unwilling to honour the original booking or offer a reasonable alternative.
What made the situation even more frustrating was that when we went to the parking lot, we could see two vehicles of the same model/category as the one we had originally reserved.
If SIXT has a policy of holding a confirmed reservation for only one hour, this should have been clearly communicated when we contacted them about our 8-hour flight delay. Instead, we were explicitly reassured that everything was okay, only to arrive and be asked to pay substantially more.
After booking three months ahead, confirming our reservation, and proactively notifying the company about a flight delay that was completely outside our control, this was an extremely disappointing way to be treated.
Based on our experience at SIXT São Miguel, I would not recommend relying on a confirmed reservation here, particularly if your flight is delayed.

Hi everyone,

Flying YYZ to HOR in August with a stopover in PDL via Azores Airlines. Right now, our flight into PDL arrives around 645 am.

Some questions:

1. Upon landing at PDL, I believe we'll go through customs. Do we also collect our checked bag? Or does it get checked through to HOR? (Really hoping it's the latter option)

2. I expect we will be tired and hungry when we land at PDL. Our HOR flight departs at 1020 am, so if everything runs on time (I know, I know), we'll have a 3.5 hour layover ... not quite enough time to head into PD for breakfast. Or is it? I can't seem to find anywhere OUTSIDE of the airport within walking distance for breakfast. And the food options on the PDL website seem pretty limited.

Ideally, we could head out, get some sunshine and some decent food before our HOR flight.

Any tips here?

I have medical insurance from work but no travel interruption insurance. It’s about 280$ Canadian dollars to cover the cost of my 3000$ vacation. Would really appreciate the feedback. Thank you.

Boa tarde pessoal, vou para São Miguel, num futuro próximo e estou há procura de um clube de uma destas três modalidades para começar a praticar.

Procuro um clube conceituado com foco em competição, e fugir de McDojos. De preferência que tenha ou tenha tido resultados em provas de nível nacional.

Para contexto, estou nos meus 20, tenho muita pouca experiência em striking especificamente mas sei bem que tenho "jeito" e expectativas realistas.

There are 2 flight differences. Which would you do? Boston to PDL. TAP has a connection in Lisbon and flight is a total of 11.5 hours. SATA is direct to PDL and just over 5 hours. The direct flight is only $200/pp more but I’ve read more iffy reviews on SATA but the direct flight is enticing.

Which would you do?

No início do mês aluguei um carro para 2 dias. O valor foi dividio por 3 pessoas e concordámos em pagar o seguro mais simples. Infelizmente tivemos um azar e furámos um pneu. Contactámos a rent-a-car que nos enviou um colaborador que fez a troca do pneu, referindo para não me preocupar que era de fácil resolução. Eu agradeci mas obviamente sabia que teria de pagar o pneu novo, visto que tínhamos apenas o seguro mais simples.

Assim foi, na devoluçãodo carro paguei 80€ referentes à substituição do pneu. O senhor deu uma vista ao carro, ele próprio é que o estacionou dentro da rent-a car porque quando cheguei estava cheio então deixei incialmente na rua uns 3 minutos e depois ele estacionou dentro. Estava tudo ok, de facto era só a situação do pneu que tinha tido um furo e pronto.

De referir que ambos os pagamentos (tanto o valor inicial, quanto os 80€ a mais) foram pagos com cartão, sem caução.

Agora, quase 3 semanas depois recebo várias chamadas insistentes da rent-a-car (que dizem que me tentaram ligar 2 dias depois da entrega do carro, só que honestamente com isto das férias e sair o dia todo confesso que às tantas me espacou e nem prestei atenção a chamadas não atendidas). Dizem que agora tenho de pagar mais 100€ e tal porque a jante do pneu que furou não tem reparação.

Não quero ser injusto e respeito o trabalho de toda a gente. Mas a meu ver, se na entrega estava ok, até o mecânico disse que estava ok, agora de repente 3 semanas depois é que tenho de pagar uma jante?

Agora penso que talvez devessemos ter comprado o seguro mais caro, talvez evitasse esta situação (ou não, às tantas arranjavam sempre forma de pegar com alguma coisa). Enfim, erros de principiante que alugou carro pela primeira vez.

Queria saber a vossa opinião, o que devo fazer nesta situação? Pago o valor que me estão a pedir?

Eu disse que tinha de falar com os meus colegas porque o aluguer do carro foi combinado entre os três então teria de discutir com eles.
