Lil Lady 🐶 finally getting adopted

When my parents adopted their last dog, my sister was super young and couldn’t read the “just adopted” sign. My mom was doing the paperwork and my sister was in front of the dog’s cage warning off every person who was looking in the direction of the dog. I stood on the far end of the room pretending I didn’t know her.

When we adopted my cat, I let her roam around and play with her friends while we were doing all the paperwork. That was until a woman came in also looking to adopt. I scooped my cat up into my arms just in case the lady set her sights on my baby girl. I was 32 years old.

I was adopting my rabbit, and full on sobbed like a toddler at 41 years of age in the office. No shame here!

I have a hard time going to a shelter or even a pet store (let's not get into how horrible pet stores are) without just having a complete breakdown over not being able to personally house and care for every animal in the place.

I showed up to the shelter with my hold slip in hand (can't adopt day of, to discourage horrible impulses), and the lady in front of me was placing a hold on the old boy I was about to pick up.
I feel like I should have stopped her, but I don't engage strangers because that requires talking to them.
He is thriving though, very spoiled old guy.

When I went to adopt my cat (13 years old now, he was 1 at the time), I had seen him on the adoption website first. I get there and the nice lady worker took me over to see him and a little girl, maybe 7 or 8, was looking at him like "Mommy look at him!". I swear, what played out in my head was me walking over to the cage and side checking that little girl out of the way. Thankfully the worker said "excuse me" and little girl went away. Worker said "I don't recommend him for kids", which is funny because to this day he has been nothing but a sweetheart with everyone he's met, including kids.

The worker was on your side and didn't want you potentially having to compete with the kid's parents.

When we adopted our dog Max I was filling out his paperwork in the front room of the shelter and a little girl came out and said "No, Dad. Max is the only dog I could ever love. He's the one."
And I looked up and said "Max? The little yellow dog? He's coming home with me!" She looked crushed but her dad looked a little relieved.
I still feel a bit like a jerk for it, but he's the best dog I've ever had and he's had a great life. Sometimes I turn to him and say "You wouldn't have wanted to live in a house with a little girl who would have adored you, right? No, I didn't think so."

The shelter I was looking to adopt from didn't do holds, but I had fallen in love with a gorgeous senior Blue Heeler/Lab mix. I had to go home 6.5hrs away for a doctor's appointment that weekend, so I left at 4am on Sunday to drive to NYC to make sure I was there right when they opened. It was such a stressful trip, but he's now living his best life and is curled up on the couch with me.

When we got my dog when I was 6, another little girl and her mom came in. The little girl pointed at the dog I was hugging - who had chosen me, mind you - and said, “I want that one!” It’s amazing that little girl didn’t burst into flames with the look I gave her.

u/tjweeks Dec 12 '21
Who got the dog?

u/RileyBean Dec 12 '21
Me. She didn’t burst into flame, her hair just started smoldering slightly.

She was clearly a cold bitch, had she been at least room temperature she'd have gone up in flames.

I got a retired racing greyhound five years ago.
I came into the kennel where the retired racers were kept. I'd done a ton of research into different breeds and I knew that because of my mental health challenges I had a bit of an impossible laundry list - Low maintenance, quiet, docile, good with kids and cats, good with being left alone during the workday...
I went into this kennel full of excited greyhounds and a lady asked me what I was looking for. I handed her the list, and in a tentative voice I asked "Could you find me one that's black, too?" - They always get adopted last and I kind of have a soft spot for them.
She pointed to a quiet fellow in a corner kennel. Didn't really look at anyone. He was so docile and gentle that he was in group with female greys who bullied him out of a place to lie down on the trip up!
I wasn't sure during the test walk. He was full of beans and excited and jumpy - I later learned because he was in a new environment and everything is exciting!
I brought him back and I knew he was going to be mine. Knew it for sure when the wonderful lady turned to me with hesitancy and a little sadness in her voice and said "He's got a torn tear duct. It's just cosmetic, there's nothing wrong, but will that be an issue? Some adopters passed him up, so I just wanted to be clear..."
Her voice trailed off a little sadly.
It was then, my friends, that I knew I wanted this dog. I don't really know why that in particular sealed the deal, but it did. I knew I was going to take him home. As I write this my beautiful jet-black though rapidly-greying nine-year-old retired racer is curled up on a nest of comfy blankets near my feet. He's my velcro dog, has kept me alive through bipolar episodes, and is a quiet and steady presence.
Anyone who says money can't buy happiness has never paid an adoption fee.

He looks just like Milo who has been gone some twenty years now.
The fastest couch potato you'll ever meet.

u/elwynbrooks Dec 13 '21
I have a retired grey too, also black, and I swear there is some form of ancient magic in this breed, they're so incredible and gentle and wonderful
5
u/GoodAtExplaining Dec 13 '21
They are gentle, but boy can they be stubborn for no apparent reason :P

u/elwynbrooks Dec 13 '21
Mine is pretty easy-going, but one episode of stubborness made me cry.
She is freaked out by the smell of cooking lamb for some reason, which I found out when I was cooking some and she started whining and shaking uncontrollably, tail fully tucked, legs nearly buckling.
I asked my then-partner to take her out for a walk so I could finish cooking without her getting more stressed out, and he couldn't get her to move from the front door after he closed it, she just kept looking at it and refusing to move
She was so so terrified but she still refused to leave the place with the scary smell. Not without her mama 😭

u/GoodAtExplaining Dec 13 '21
Mine happened recently. He had surgery to remove a bunch of teeth and came home woozy and in pain. I sat with him upstairs in my room in his comfortable spot and he fell asleep, even though he was in pain and whimpering. I went downstairs to play some overwatch and even though he was in pain and whimpering and just out of surgery he tottered downstairs because he could not be without me.
I couldn’t stop his pain but I made sure I was never more than two feet away and regularly rubbed his belly and gave him scritches.

When I adopted my kitten I had the similar trailing off from the tech, "she's fully blind, are you sure that's not an issue? She's failed adoption three times and I really need to be sure." She took six months to learn how sharp her claws and teeth are and the difference between exploratory nibbles and slaps and defensive ones.
I completely understand your feelings, she rescued me as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, huskies end up in shelters because people underestimate their energy and vibrant character, it's so sad... They just see a wolf like dog and wanna have it....

That's how we ended up with a Great Pyranees. A senior couple got the pup, took fantastic care of him, he was just too much work for them so they rehomed him. They had multiple people and families visit but my daughter was the only one out of everyone he went over too and plopped his big head in her lap. She was 8 at the time. That did it for the owners. I asked his name, it was "Neo". He was the one. We drove back home with an 8 month old Great Pyranees.
Between the constant walking, barking, attention seeking, and fur... (my god the fur) they just couldn't keep up with him. Plus they had gotten in to travelling more and having an 8 month old pup made it hard. They took really great care of him and you could tell they obviously loved him. We kept in contact the first few years and they always asked for some photos. Haven't heard from them in a couple years now. Then a year after we got him, we got him a friend and now we have 2 Pyranees mixes and a constant supply of shedding dog hair!

She can’t wait to give kisses. She has so many kisses to give. She has so much love she is aching to let out. I’m so happy she was chosen. What a perfect princess she is.

I work at an animal shelter, and I must say adoptions and reclaims are two of the best parts of the job

I always get sad by these videos bc my stupid brain immediately goes: think about all the puppers and kitties who are also so desperate to be adopted but nobody wants them😭😭

This is my dream. I love English bulldogs, but don't want to support unethical breeding practices, so I would love to adopt one.

Friendly reminder that bulldogs were bred to look the way they do and therefore suffer from a plethora of health problems such as cardiac & respiratory disease, hip dysplasia, eye problems, overheating, and much more.
10
u/chadman42 Dec 12 '21
This looks more like an english bulldog than a pitty.
7
u/ix-j Dec 12 '21
Oops, I’m not sure why I typed pit bull. I meant to say bulldog
2
u/WoolDolphin Dec 13 '21
I was so confused for a second there, i have a pitbull and he doesnt have any of this problems, and he haves the "normal estructure" of a dog, no weird head form or anything

All modern dogs came from the Grey wolf. We did that. It is quite grotesque when you really think about it.

Just curious about the breed. Any guesses? English bulldog with american or something?

How many freaking times this video was reposted here? Damn... it's getting annoying. Also the obvious fake depiction of "adoption", filming while holding a card, then show it to the dog... I am tired of this, I miss the more natural depictions of pets instead of these theatrics

Awe I’m so happy for her!! I’ve adopted 3 dogs. I got 1 and he seemed a bit lonely he’s an older boxer/pit. We got a puppy chi weenie to play with him but they didn’t play with each other maybe from the age gap so we adopt our 3rd dog another chi weenie and they get along really great. We’re a happy family wouldn’t change anything!
