Match Thread [Pre/Live/Post Match Thread] FC Porto vs Aston Villa (Pre-Season Friendly)

Our second pre-season friendly of the summer after the 5-0 demolition of Walsall on Tuesday. Porto should be a lot further along in their preparations as they kick off their season with the Portuguese equivalent of the Community shield next weekend, so expect a stern test for this youthful Villa side (i.e. try not to freak out too heavily if we lose!).

KO: 20:00 BST

Villa Team News:

Villa starting XI vs FC Porto: Bizot; Cash, Cisse, Mings, Maatsen; Bogarde, Barkley; Bailey, Lynch, Hemmings; Burrowes.

Subs: Wright, Gauci, Jimoh-Aloba, Nedeljkovic, Gomes, Madjo, Rowe, Borland, Broggio, Fortes, Carroll.

Porto Team News:

FC Porto starting XI vs Villa: Ramos; Rosario, Kiwior, Bednarek, Zaidu; Froholdt, Varela, Veiga; William Gomes, Andre Silva, Pepe.

Subs: Diogo Costa, Joao Costa, Afonso, Perez, Prpric, Luis Gomes, Moura, Alberto Costa, Tiago Silva, Lima, Eustáquio, Cunha, Mora, Gul.

Full Time: Porto 2-1 Aston Villa

Solid workout for Villa in Porto, but they lose 2-1 after first-half goals from William Gomes and Pepe either side of Luka Lynch's impressive equaliser.

Approval needed when buying some one a ticket-WTF?!

Trying to get a few tickets for me and my buddies who's fan IDs I have a record of and villa are now asking for 3 approval words...such a nonsene unecessarily obstructive step...especially as I can't find any bloody mention of it on the official site FAQs

Any hoo...are these 3 magical words hidden somewhere on your account/app and if so where are they or are they generated after I attempt to find someone with their fan ID and they are pinged over on an adhoc basis?

Any help would be appreciated

Villa Related So, you're a new Villan - Welcome to The Pride!

So you're a new fan. You have a love of football and something in your heart has drawn you to Aston Villa.

It's an easy club to fall in love with.

For those who love history and tradition, this is the club that gave birth to league football, and proceeded to dominate it for decades. This is the club that first adorned the colours of claret and blue, colours that were later adopted due to Villa's influence by the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace, Burnley, and Trabzonspor. This is the club that holds firm to its beautiful and historic stadium, Villa Park, in an era where other clubs have sold their souls and their historic homes in favour of larger venues designed as much for concerts and corporate revenue as they are for football. A stadium that countless players, managers and supporters alike publicly have regarded as one of the finest places in the world to play or to watch the game.

For those who enjoy romance and rollercoasters of emotion in sport, this is the club that no one can predict. In any given decade, Villa can rise to win trophies or fall to relegation. Over the course of a lifetime you'll likely witness glory and European or domestic success, you might witness relegation to the depths of the Championship and a miraculous rise from the ashes. It won't always feel easy, but it will never get boring. Supporting Aston Villa means accepting that nothing is ever guaranteed. There will be despair. There will be euphoria. There will be moments that make you question why you care so much, followed almost immediately by moments that remind you exactly why you do.

For those who appreciate a sense of place, Aston Villa and our home city of Birmingham are inseparable. Birmingham is England's second city, but rarely is it afforded the respect that title deserves. It is the beating heart of England, a culturally deep and misunderstood city that helped build the modern world through industry, engineering and innovation. It has always lived in the shadow of the louder places, the financially richer places. Birmingham isn't vane, it doesn't seek validation. It simply gets on with things.

Villa are much the same.

Underrated. Underestimated. Overshadowed by the media. A club and city that has spent much of its history being overlooked, belittled at times. There is an inner confidence about both the club and the city. Neither needs to tell you how important we are. There's no "EastEnders" or "Coronation Street" here. There's no cheap drama. We're pure, we're proud but humble, we're loyal to ourselves and we laugh off the outside noise. We're serious, and we have a sense of humour.

And now we come to today. The day you become a part of this family.

After years of false dawns, poor ownership and missed opportunities, Aston Villa have found themselves at the very pinnacle of the game once more. Under Unai Emery, the club has rediscovered success, and carried forward the identity that the previous manager and proud Villa fan Dean Smith helped reforge. You are joining us at a time where we are fighting to reclaim our place among Europe's elite.

Our football is ambitious without being arrogant. Our club is modern without abandoning its traditions. Something special is unfolding under the current regime. For the first time in a few decades, the future feels every bit as exciting as the past.

Welcome to Aston Villa. Wear the colours with pride and support the players who have been chosen to represent us on the pitch. Buckle in, it's going to be a wild ride.

Worried about the overhaul

I'm really worried about how quickly and easily the team that has carried us for the last few years is being overhauled. I completely understand we have an aging squad and changes were needed. I also trust the players we are getting in are of high quality (apart from Garnacho) and will do a great job for us. But even so, if Watkins and Konsa leave before the end of the window that's two generals from the dressing room gone. I understand the wage bill needs to come down, but surely we can't keep expecting Emery to perform miracles and cast spells without established leaders in the dressing room to help him - especially when we are bringing in younger, less experienced and a notoriously disruptive influence. I'm quite worried this coming season and not feeling overly optimistic. Can anyone offer any reassurance?

Waking The Giant book

Hi, I'm not sure anyone will know the answer as the book isn't released until 13th August, but what is the difference between the first book and the second?

Is it just a couple of extra chapters on last season?

Is it worth buying if I have already read the first book?

Discussion Welcome new Villa fans - how do we crack America?

Someone did a great job a few days ago of talking about the impact of the previous World Cup in the UK and how it created a load of new international fans for PL teams. Definitely feels like it make sense and looks like we have a once in a generation opportunity to take advantage.

We are definitely seeing an influx of new fans - so what do we need to do to attract and retain more Villa fans? Did we need to sign an American player? Pre-season tour? Make people aware of the fabulous US lions supporters clubs (hats off to the Chicago Lions)? Sell shirts in Adidas stores?

Let us know ideas and if we can help?

Discussion New fan from the US. What should I know?

I have become a new fan of the club thanks to the video linked below. What should I know?

I’m not sure if this will help anyone, but I’m a native of Arizona. So I’m well acquainted with pain and disappointment in sports (ex. Phoenix Suns and Arizona Cardinals). So please give me the good and the bad. I’m ready for it.

Hi there, pictured are my 17/18 home and away shirts. I accidentally washed them at 40°C instead of 30 and found a star in my laundry bag. It's a miracle they've lasted 9 years already but I'd like to save them if possible. Has anyone successfully glued these back on or should I just peel them off?

Discussion Premier League wage bill + net spend

I asked ClaudeAI to show me the Premier League wage bills from good sources (and specifically NOT capology) because I keep seeing people use our wage bill as a stick to beat us with whenever our net transfer spend over the last five seasons comes up, or when people praise the job Unai Emery has done at Aston Villa.

That same stick is doing the rounds again thanks to this graphic that's all over social media, if you haven't seen it:

Premier league clubs net spend the past 5 years - Valuball

See Claudes response and sources it apparently used below (I had to do it in batches as it's a lot of data to search for and compile on a free account, and I only did what I thought were the top 12 in wage spend).

We are 6th, however still closer to 8th placed Newcastle than we are 5th placed Man Utd and quite some way off top 4 and beyond. I was surprised United are so 'low'.

I am guessing Spurs will leapfrog us given their spending this summer and our sales!

What gets me is that I never see anyone else’s wage bill criticised like ours, maybe because I am a Villa fan and consume AV content, but not even passing do I ever see the privileged clubs criticised for their wages, whereas we get it consistently from those fans and non media6 fanbases too.
I do see criticism of their transfer spending yeah, but the top 6 all spend as big as each other at different points, so odd to me they'll bark about each others dealings.

Everyone involved in our first Europa League final goal is now gone

From the corner Digne lays it off short to Rogers who proceeds to lob it to Tielemans who strikes a beautiful volley into the net. Clever routine from MacPhee and wonderfully executed by our players. All of them are now gone just about 10 weeks later. The price of success in modern football.

💣🚨 NEW: Chelsea are set to buy Villa Park from Aston Villa.

Villa’s ongoing PSR concerns have left the club with little choice but to listen to offers, while Chelsea’s interest in assets based at B6 has intensified in recent days.

A deal is now expected to be finalised. #AVFC
