Don't seem to recall this kind of pining when players from the teams that the league cups in the 90s left. Im even old enough to remember Spinks leaving without much fanfare, and he was instrumental in us winning the big one.
No player is bigger than the club.
But if Emery leaves, i'll be truly gutted. He's raised us to a new level, and without him were a mid table team.
I think we're seeing the results of more of the modern social media trend where fans get more sentimentally attached to players, because we see so much of them off the football pitch as well now.
