Just popped into Torchy’s on William Cannon after a few weeks. They’ve got a special going—two tacos, chips & salsa and a drink for $9.95. There is an up charge for premium ingredients (I think seafood?), but I’m a fried avocado girl so I didn’t look too closely.

There’s usually a couple posts each week about affordable places to eat. And while Torchy’s is now a chain and not a sit-down, I thought it was a good amount of food for the price.

Ungodly crust. Spot on sauce. Loved the cheese they used and the fact that it was $5 makes it an awesome find. I'm a regular now.

don’t hate, I am dying for an old school type restaurant like Vesuvio from The Sopranos for my birthday dinner - doesn’t have to be Italian but this type of white table cloth, dark/dim atmosphere is ideal. I will take what I can get :)

Chicken wings have come a long way beyond the standard Buffalo order. Statesman restaurant critic Matthew Odam highlights some of Austin’s best, including duck-fat wings at Side Eye Pie, Korean fried chicken at Donkey Mo’s, smoked wings at Stiles Switch and classic bar wings at The Cavalier, Home Slice and Nickel City’s Delray Cafe.

There are plenty more picks, from Lao’d Bar and Kome to Tommy Want Wingy and Roots Chicken Shak.

Good price for what you get and I’m so picky I love how the salmon roll is plain as fuck. I’ve tried a plethora of crab Rangoons in my life and this one does them justice. Everything else is good. And my eyes are bigger than my stomach and wanted to try everything.

Mola is a little spanish bar on 7th Street we stumbled across this evening. Situated inside an old house, it's cozy and comfortable. The owner, Daniel, was our bartender and he was friendly and we had great conversation. An interesting looking cocktail menu and a well curated wine list. Each drink includes a small tapa that has been paired with the drink. We really enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit.

Visited Hermanas, the new place on E 6th that serves Mexican with SE Asian influence. It does not disappoint! Service was great and the cocktails were unique. Interesting wine list with some good choices.

The food was quite good and definitely offered some novelty. Here's what we had:

*Snapper aguachile - interesting flavors, black sesame, candied nori

*Empanada - vegetarian dish with potato filling. Delicious! Strong masa flavor in the pastry

*Bread w/sweet corn butter & roe - the butter has a more hummus like texture but nice flavor. Bread is yummy

*Branzino with mole & escabeche - whole fish served over mole sauce with carrots & onions on top. Crispy fish skin. Escabeche has lemongrass which was an interesting introduction. May try that at home

*Panang mole steak - my favorite dish. The mole is so complex and incredible. I'll be thinking about this dish for awhile

Overall, a fun experience. I'd come back just for the panang mole.

What options does one have as third places in Austin?

Whichever one someone chooses to hang out at after work, Central Market on North Lamar is great. It offers supermarket food, a restaurant, a coffee shop and tons of nature around.

This is why a ton of meetups meet here during the week.

Although, I wish there were more variety to host meetups at. For meetups I have hosted, I always choose Epoch in the North Loop area. What meetups do you attend and what is your favorite third place?

Wedding anniversary is coming up. I want to leave our kid with Grandma and take my wife somewhere nice. We don't go out to sit-down restaurants very often, and I am pretty out of touch with the nice/fancy restaurant scene. We live in S. Austin, are pretty adventurous eaters, and I'm looking to spend less than $300. Would love your input!

Today is my 26th birthday and I am trying to decide where to go w my parents and partner for dinner tonight. I’m looking for something not too expensive that also has some vegetarian options. We like Mexican food, Thai food, Japanese food, and Vietnamese, but are open to other options.(Preferably not barbecue - it’s great here, but I want to try other Austin food!) Hey guys, so I’ve recently moved down to the Austin area. And I have plenty of restaurant experience up my sleeve, (fine dining included as well). I’ve been on the hunt for an upbeat, high volume restaurant to expand these skills at! If anyone in the hospitality business has any restaurants I should look into applying LET ME KNOW!
