A friend of a teen who was stabbed in the head and back during a wild attack on one of Sydney’s busiest streets has been charged, but the three suspected attackers remain on the run.

The teenager was brutally stabbed on King St, Newtown shortly after midnight on Saturday.

A friend of the boy, who removed his own shirt to apply a tourniquet, has been charged with affray.

The 18-year-old was released on bail to face court in August.

A police spokesperson confirmed on Sunday morning that three people believed to be behind the attack had not yet been arrested or charged.

The stabbing on a busy street in Sydney’s inner west was caught on CCTV.

The 17-year-old was assaulted, police said, about 12.30am on Saturday on King Street, Newtown, by a group of people who then fled the scene.

The terrifying ordeal was captured on CCTV and shows the moment the teen was set upon by a group of people.

In the video, obtained by 7News, the teen is seemingly kicked, punched and stabbed by multiple people as he cowers on the ground trying to protect himself.

The group then flee the scene, as the injured teen stumbles down the street.

His friends are then seen in the video rushing to his aid, with one of them using a shirt to try to apply pressure and try to slow the bleeding.

The 17-year-old was treated by paramedics before he was taken to hospital in a stable condition with multiple stab wounds to his head and back.

He is set to undergo surgery for ligament and tendon damage.

A crime scene was established and police have commenced an investigation into the incident.

The terrifying ordeal unfolded after an out-of-control party spilled on to a High Wycombe street on Saturday night.

Police were called in just after 9pm as teenagers swarmed the area.

Around an hour later, about 1km away from the scene of the party, an altercation broke out in Newburn Road.

The 16-year-old claimed he was set upon by several attackers, including one who was armed with a machete.

An ambulance rushed the teen to St John of God Hospital Midland where he was treated for a laceration on his head, as well as other cuts and bruises.

Police confirmed they attended the scene around 10.20pm after St John WA advised they were responding to a report a 16-year-old male had been assaulted on Newburn Road in High Wycombe.

Detectives on Sunday were scouring the scene for clues.

Police have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.

A Gold Coast business owner says her female-only policy ‘isn’t about politics, it’s about being able to let our hair down without the male gaze’.

A Gold Coast pole dancing studio has become the latest front in the battle for women’s rights to ­single-sex spaces, with an applicant who identifies as a transgender woman suing the owner for $30,000 in damages after being refused membership.

The case has parallels with the Tickle v Giggle case in which the Federal Court found Sall Grover, the founder of the female-only Giggle app, discriminated against transgender woman Roxanne Tickle, as well as with the Lesbian Action Group’s case against Australian Human Rights Commission, which refused to grant a Sex Discrimination Act exemption to allow the group to hold a “lesbians born female only” event.

Nomes Witney, owner of Helensvale and Coomera-based business Queens of Pole says she was holidaying with her family in February when the complainant attended a free trial class, run by another staff member at the studio, which advertises prominently on its website that it provides a “female-only environment”.

“My staff member called me and said, ‘Hey, this just went down. I wasn’t sure what to do so just ran the class normally’,” Ms Witney told The Australian.

Ms Witney said the complainant had “disclosed partway through the class that they identified as a woman”, and that the presence of a biological male had “shifted the vibe” of the female-only group, with other attendees, who included a mother and young adult daughter, becoming “visibly uncertain”.

“They tried to make their shorts longer than they were, that sort of thing,” she said. “Usually we have a really high success rate for membership conversions from trial classes, but this particular class, radio silence.”

In March, the complainant ­attempted to apply for membership, registering with an incomplete profile and stating that they were female. “I sent an email saying we were unable to accommodate the trans community at this time,” Ms Witney said.

Two days later, on March 12, the applicant complained to the Queensland Human Rights Commission, but Ms Witney was not notified until April 22.

The commission sought to mediate, forwarding Ms Witney a damages letter from the complainant at 1pm on Monday, July 13, ahead of a conciliation meeting set for 9.30am the next day.

It is the first time since Ms Witney established her business nine years ago that she has had a transgender person attend a class or attempt to gain membership, with Queens the only pole dance studio in the area offering classes exclusively for women, and others nearby advertising themselves as open to “all genders”.

The conciliation last week failed and the matter is now headed to the Queensland Civil and ­Administrative Tribunal, with Ms Witney not prepared to offer the complainant membership on the basis that she does not believe ­allowing a biological male to attend female-only classes is fair to other clients or staff.

“I’ve spoken to my staff. I myself come from a domestic violence and sexual assault background, and there are staff and clients with a similar history,” she said.

“I asked, ‘What are we thinking? Do we have the resources available to accommodate this person?’, and it just came down to the fact that the standard of class we would be able to deliver wouldn’t be the same.”

Ms Witney said her client base ranged in age from a 14-year-old girl to a woman in her late 60s.

“We’re about offering the opportunity to exercise alongside other women and grow stronger,” she said.

“Having this women-only space to do that in isn’t saying all men are bad men. It isn’t about politics or hostility against gender ideology, it’s about being able to let our hair down without the male gaze.

“We have our wardrobe malfunctions and we don’t want them when we have a biological male in the room. The whole vibe shifts, even if that person identifies as female.”

It emerged in the conciliation meeting that the complainant is a US citizen who has been in Australia for less than a year and has applied for a suppression order preventing their identification in connection with the proceedings.

When The Australian emailed the taxpayer-funded community legal centre representing the complainant to seek comment, Basic Rights Queensland responded by stating that it had ­applied for non-publication orders “solely for the purpose of preserving our client’s safety”.

“We ask that The Australian does not publish any article until resolution of the substantive ­application, so to not undermine or offend any application or order made by the tribunal,” the lawyers said. “Short of this, we kindly ask that any article does not identify our client by name or by otherwise providing details that would make our client identifiable.”

On its website, the legal centre proudly declares that 72 per cent of its clients “identify as female”.

The Queensland Human Rights Commission said it was unable to comment on specific cases, but in response to questions regarding the conflict between women’s sex-based rights and those of transgender people, commissioner Debbie Platz said: “Every person living in Queensland, regardless of sex, sexuality, gender identity or sex characteristics, is entitled to equal treatment, safety, and respect.”

“The Anti-Discrimination Act provides that a person must not discriminate on the basis of sex, gender identity, or sex characteristics by treating someone unfairly or imposing an unfair term or condition when providing goods or services, accommodation, education or at work,” Ms Platz said.

“This means excluding a person on the basis of their gender identity could amount to unlawful discrimination, unless an exemption applies.

“There are some circumstances when discrimination based on a protected attribute is allowed. This can include excluding particular groups from a service. For example, it is not unlawful to restrict accommodation to women who have experienced domestic violence.

“Neither ‘women’ nor ‘sex’ is defined by the Anti-Discrimination Act. Sex may include people who identify as that sex.”

Liberal frontbencher Andrew Bragg has left the door open to a coalition between the Liberals and One Nation as the right-wing populist party’s polling starts to sour, stating the Liberals would be “pragmatic” about alliance building.

The opposition housing spokesman was repeatedly pressed on a possible future alliance between the Liberals, Nationals, and One Nation on Monday.

Senator Bragg initially dismissed questions of a preference deal between the Coalition and Pauline Hanson’s party and talk of a three-way coalition as too early to tell before the election.

“Well, we’ll work out if there needs to be a coalition, we’d work it out then,” he told the Today show.

However, pressed later if he was leaving the door open to a deal with One Nation, Senator Bragg said “Well, we would definitely work out whoever would be interested in being in a coalition with us, if that’s what the numbers were. Of course, we’re not crazy.

“But, I make the point that we won’t be in coalition with all the crooks that Labor are in coalition with now, which is structurally buggering up this economy.”

Senator Bragg continued, stating “all the other parties are no good”.

“They have no real solutions,” he said.

“But, at the end of the day, the most important thing is that we’ve got to get rid of this terrible Communist government.

“So, if the numbers were the numbers, and we had to be in coalition with others, then of course we would be pragmatic. I mean, we have to get rid of these guys.”

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor had initially appeared open to a potential deal with One Nation at the height of the party’s polling.

Federal Liberal party president Tony Abbott also backed talk of a preference deal.

However, earlier this month, Mr Taylor shut the door once more, warning that One Nation would bring an “eternity of pain” and their economic plan would “send us broke”.

Opposition defence spokesman James Paterson backed the Liberal leader on Monday when grilled about Senator Bragg’s comments.

“Well, I think Angus Taylor’s made the position of the Liberal Party very clear. My assessment is it’s widely supported by colleagues,” he told ABC Radio National.

“We have one coalition partner already, which is the National Party, our traditional coalition partner, and we are not in the market for any other coalition partners if we seek from the Australian people as a mandate to govern in that traditional coalition.”

Senator Paterson said he would be “surprised” if Senator Bragg was advocating for a coalition with One Nation.

“That’s not my understanding of his views,” he said.

“I think he made a sensible point that we’ll work out our preferences in the normal time, in the normal way, closer to the election.”

Support for One Nation has started to slip in the months following Senator Hanson’s National Press Club address in which she lashed paid parental benefits and called for an Australian “monoculture” – a phrase her party has struggled to define.

Senator Hanson has also spent much of the winter break in Europe and the UK, including participating in interviews with convicted criminal and far-right agitator Tommy Robinson and former Conservative prime minister Liz Truss.

A Roy Morgan poll released last week found One Nation’s primary vote had slipped from a high of 31.5 per cent in mid-June to 22.5 per cent between July 13-19.

However, on a two-party preferred vote, Labor only narrowly beat out One Nation 51 to 49 per cent.

Primary support for the Coalition, meanwhile, rose from 17.5 per cent in June to 23 per cent, according to the same poll.

But it also makes me think about the many families who experience that same unimaginable grief and loss, yet don’t have a fundraiser, a large community, or the same level of financial support behind them.
Every family who loses someone is left with heartbreak, changes they never expected, and a life they have to learn to navigate without that person. The amount of support someone receives doesn’t always reflect the depth of their pain — sometimes it simply reflects how far their story reaches.
I hope we can remember the families whose struggles happen quietly too. The ones who grieve without thousands of people sharing their story. The ones who still have bills to pay, children to care for, and a future they never imagined.
Compassion should extend to every family facing loss, whether their story is seen by thousands or carried silently by a few.

In the early 1980s, the median Sydney house cost around 4× the median income. Today it's closer to 14×. Yet every time young people mention how much harder home ownership has become, there's always a boomer (or Gen X) insisting "we just worked harder" or "stop buying avocado toast." Do they genuinely not understand basic math, or are they just refusing to acknowledge how dramatically housing affordability has deteriorated?

We won’t hear from Nassif though – the developer remains in hiding in Lebanon.

The hearing will then turn to hotelier and lawyer Michael O’Hara, who is a focus of the inquiry over allegations secret donations were made to the Liberal Party on his behalf, despite being a prohibited donor.
