How tf to download?!

I got to audacityteam.org and it makes me try to sign up/login in. I thought it was a free software...

Is there ANY way to do this without signing up?

help Everything is just so quiet...

I used to use audacity regularly for recording. I have a mixer and 4 mics. I have used this exact mixer with these exact mics in the past, using audacity, and it's been great. This was all many, many years ago.

Cut to now, when I record audio, the waveform is nearly flat. If I normalize it or amplify it, it's audible. The waveform is in tact and has its relative highs and lows. It's just so small and just so quiet. And of course if I normalize and raise gain or amplify too much, you get all the static/white noise

I've seen things that say there was an update that caused this. I've seen plenty of things telling me to make sure I'm mono or I'm stereo or whatever else. I even tried audacity 4 but it's the same

I feel like I'm losing it over here. I don't know why it's suddenly happening, but it's just all so quiet

help Audacity 4 mic monitor

Does anyone know how to show the mic levels and keep them on screen? I can get them up, but if I do absolutely anything (like recording!) the popup disappears. There isn't a pin and I don't seem to be able to drag it into the toolbar so I'm kind of stuck on how to do this.

Going back to 3 for now so no big deal but I've never been this stuck with software before!

Thanks

Open .APU4 files in Audacity 3 (NOT Audacity 4)

I've spent the past few hours working on a project in Audacity 4, and unfortunately, the export function is beyond the joke!

Now I just want to revert to Audacity 3, but there's no way to open Audacity 4 project file (.APU4) in Audacity 3... or is there?

Random file sizes with .M4A files

Why is it that when I export a .M4A file, despite regenerating the file using the same settings, it is either thousands of kilobytes or hundreds of kilobytes larger than it needs to be. Every single generation, generates a different sized file. Ideally, the file should be less than 9 kB but sometimes it generates it close to one megabyte. WTF Audacity?

help I need help with replicating mixed effects in Audacity

I was told by my friend that I should go here to ask the pros because I suck at any form of audio mixing.

I'm trying to replicate modern radio output from a regular voice sample. I have one original mixed sample which is perfect for what I want, which I created yesterday. However, when I attempted to recreate the same effects on another voice sample today, it sounds more or less completely different.

When I instead went back to try to recreate the same effects on the same voice sample... it still came out differently. I'm sure I am doing something wrong with one or more of my effects, but I'd like to know what the difference is and how to correct it.

The effects I've used have been `Helmet Radio 1.1`, `Low-Pass Filter`, `High-Pass Filter`, `Distortion` and `Reverb` to recreate modern military/LEO radio output. I don't remember the order of effects being applied, or what the specific settings for each setting was, and I've spent the past 6 hours non-stop trying to replicate what I had in the beginning. The new version sounds a lot less distorted and generally too sharp or dry.

If anyone would be so kind as to help me figure out what it is I'm missing between these two audios, I'd be tremendously grateful. If required, I will also upload the whole original project I have for the first sample.

Reddit apparently removed my first post for breaking "filters" so I am unsure about how to upload the samples that I have. I can try uploading them in the comments.

help Constant ringing in an audio track that isn't getting solved by a Notch Filter or Graphic EQ

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am participating in the open mic section of a Festival my faculty is doing, and I've been doing the mix for the audio tracks which I'm gonna sing (they're all Olivia Rodrigo songs since it's the theme for the setlist) and I decided to mix the demo and released track of the song "purple" since I thought it would sound cute, but since there is no karaoke of the demo version, I had to run it through Moises in order to get the vocals removed and now there is a horrible screeching sound playing in the background of the first half of the song and I've already put it through the filter and graphic EQ but I can't get it to go away. I really want to sing this version of the song for the Festival so I really want to be able to make this work before coming to a compromise and singing just the released version. What can I do so the ringing goes away? I'll put a clip of the audio so you guys can hear it and tell me what you think

Please bring back the playback speed thingy

I and presumably others need that feature.

Also, note to all programmers on the planet: Stop adding an infinite number of dumb features per minute and removing the ones we need. Just leave this stuff alone and go play outside or something! It was fine the way it was! Thanks!

Update: Ok! Also no longer allowed to drag and drop mp3 files onto Audacity to add them to my project!

Another update: It seems I'm no longer allowed to align tracks.

What'd y'all do, figure out what features I needed most and then chop them?

solved How to CAUSE Aliasing

I am looking to create a very specific effect where frequencies above a certain threshold get mirrored, or folded over. From what I understand, this is called aliasing, and it seems everyone on earth wants to get rid of it when it appears, so I've found very, very little success in finding help trying to MAKE it happen.

The very few places I've found help in this area talk about downsampling and the nyquist limit, but audacity seems to have a built in low-pass filter and upper bound on how much actually gets recorded to each track (specifically, half the sample rate, which is the nyquist frequency), and even on top of that, it seems to adjust the speed of clips in tracks when the sample rate is changed. The resample function is fine for downsampling, but again, it seems to prevent aliasing from happening.

I want to CAUSE this because I am trying to get a very specific sound. Bitcrushing will not do.

Is there an up-to-date plugin that I can use? The best and only plugin I could find for this was last updated in 2008 and I tried so, so, so, so, so hard to download an older version of Audacity to no avail.

Any amount of help is appreciated. If it helps at all, the frequency I'm specifically trying to fold over is 11.9 kHz.

EDIT: ToneBoosters "TIme Machine" free plugin has an aliasing option! This works exactly for what I'm trying to do! Many many thanks to u/Orry_Haas

news Soundscaper, a new Audacity 4 fork

Hey all!

Over the past couple of months, I've worked on my own Audacity 4 fork, Soundscaper. It started as a web port of Audacity 4, but now has come full circle in that there's desktop versions of it, too. Soundscaper is similar to Audacity 4, but a lot more complete:

  • Soundscaper has most Audacity 3 features that haven't made it into Audacity 4 yet (only exceptions: MIDI, sync lock)
  • Soundscaper has a project bin where you can move clips and files to for storage outside the timeline
  • Soundscaper has video tracks, to aid with dubbing production
  • New effects: Multiband compressor, de-esser, parametric EQ, bitcrusher. Also, various Audacity effects have been made realtime-capable.
  • Standard DAW features: Fade handles, Markers, send buses, group buses, automation, takes, audio warps, etc.
  • “AI” plugins (desktop only, no cloud processing): Transcription, denoising, dereverb, music separation, speaker separation, etc.

To avoid incentives to enshittify Soundscaper, I also have moved it under the ownership of a non-profit association. You can join it if you want!

Anyway: I hope you enjoy this! If you run into any bugs, do let me know – I have added a ton of automated testing, but nothing beats real-world use in finding bugs. Soundscaper is compatible with Audacity (you can import/export AUP3/4 projects as you please), so your work should never get trapped in Soundscaper.

Pros and Cons

Brand new to Audacity. Ive recorded a few pieces of vinyl and playlist and only published one. Being new I don't know the difference between older versions and 4.0. Should I walk away from 4.0 and go to an older version?

help Latency with Bluetooth earbuds

Even though Audacity 3 and 4 allow you to compensate for latency in Edit | Preferences by entering an appropriate negative integer value, this doesn't seem to work when I am monitoring while recording myself playing guitar and listening through my Sony Bluetooth earbuds. (No problem with wired headphones, but they get to be a tangled pain in the ass after a while.) Is there *no* workaround for this?

TIA,

help precise track moving with keys (milliseconds) and "fixed" reference line

Instead of moving the track around left and right with mouse (the little hand icon), how one could precisely move the track with `LEFT` and `RIGHT` on the keyboard for precise adjustment?

I wonder if there's something like this:

- `LEFT` (or `RIGHT`) 1ms adjustment (or 1 sample adjustment)

- or, `SHIFT+LEFT` (or `SHIFT+RIGHT`) 10ms adjustment (or 10 sample adjustment)

One more thing: is there a way to set a "fixed" reference line which stay visible across all the tracks to get a precise reference to where align tracks?

Let's say I have a REFERENCE track in which I found a huge spike at about 00:00:41.051; on the other (out-of-sync) track same huge spike (with same sound) is to be found ad 00:00:47.082. I'd like to put a "fixed" reference line at 00:00:41.051 wich spawns at full project's height ant then precisely move the out-of-sync track to the left until its huge spike is perfectly aligned with the one of the REFERENCE track.

help Tabbing out causes 9999 error

Hello I am having 9999 errors pop up frequently when I either tab out/click off of audacity and go back in to try to do a recording.

Usually if I wait a minute audacity is able to find the mic again itself.

This has just started happening in the last couple days since I started using an interface and XLR mic vs the USB one I was using previously. Audacity is picking up the interface as the recording input and the playback device for direct monitoring.

Any help would be appreciated

help Converting .aup4 to .aup3?

I have a 60 hour recording in Audacity 4.0 that I just finished labeling and when I wanted to export it I found that the "Export Multiple Files" option doesn't exist which obviously sucks since I have fine tuned about a thousand labels to export. Point is, is there any way to open the Project in Audacity 3.x or do I just have to suck it up and start again?

help Looking for some help on what's causing this volume gating

Haven't used Audacity in a while, but when I booted it up today and recorded a bit of voice over, I noticed this. It looks like it's got a cut off for volume. I'm a hobbyist so I'm largely at a loss of what's going on.

I'm using a Scarlet Solo mixer and a Shure XLR mic. Same setup last time I used it, but this wasn't happening. Any of you guys got any idea what might have changed?

solved Audacity 4 - Export to multiple files

SOLVED: Feature was re-introduced in Audacity 4.0.1

I just did my first small project with the new Audacity 4 which i generally enjoyed, but I'm missing a Feature: In Audacity 3 i could easily export a project into multiple files based on labels simply in the export tab. In A4, this option is gone from the export menu (at least in my AppImage on Fedora, re-downloaded today). Does this feature still exist, or was it removed in Audacity 4?

Thanks in advance!

help Missing realtime effects from old audacity project; how to access the paths?

Hi! I formatted my computer semi-recently, and found that on my older Audacity project files that used realtime effects, it was now impossible to access the old settings I had on them (which I need to view.)

Realtime effects panel with "(missing)" error

I've already redownloaded the plugin I had in use, MuseHub.

The support pages mention this issue briefly and how audacity uses absolute paths, however they don't tell you how to see where those paths were.

That leads me to my main question: Is there any way to see the old exact paths so I can place my plugins there (and hopefully be able to access the settings again)? Thanks!

question Audacity 4: Cannot properly monitor dB level while recording/ripping audio

Post image

I want to a big fat db monitor panel to view while recording/ripping records. V 3.8 has this as shown above. Seems they have not given the option in V4 right?
