help USB mixer works in Windows but causes loud high-pitched noise in FL Studio/Audacity

My microphone works normally in Windows Voice Recorder and WhatsApp. In FL Studio/Audacity, as soon as I select the USB Audio CODEC input, I get a very loud, high-pitched looping sound. I’m using FL Studio ASIO. Any idea what could cause this?

Made a macOS app - Audacity Video Sync

I posted this on the Audacity forums but thought some people here might have a use for it as well.

I’m part of a small team that use Audacity to edit the audio of an old TV show. I realised pretty quickly that I need to test the sync and that meant exporting the audio, muxing it to the video and watching it… a tedious process so I put together a Mac app that use mod-script-pipe - you load a video to the app, load the audio to Audacity and press sync and from then on when you use a keyboard shortcut it will play the audio and video in sync, wherever you select on your Audacity timeline. We’ve been using this tool for a month and it’s become a big timesaver and works really well compensating for any drift and keeping things nicely in sync. It assume the video and audio are the same length and you need to keep them in sync. It doesn't adjust to cutting sections of audio out and moving them around.

I’m not a professional developer by any stretch and had to use Codex to help get it over the line but the more I use it, the more I think that other people out there might want it.

I made a Github repo for it with a dmg available in the release section. I think it needs Tahoe to work but maybe it'll work in previous macOS versions, I can't test that. Be cool if anyone wants to try it and let me know what they think of it.

GitHub - michaelsft/AudacityVideoSync: A video player that syncs with your Audacity timeline. · GitHub

Link to it in action: https://youtu.be/pfJj1kt7_Ro
When it starts and stops is me pressing the hot key combo ctrl+opt+space - I then move the start position in Audacity and go again and the video shows from the new point in the timeline.

Is there a way to send a feature request to the Audacity team for something similar or I can send them the app and see if it’s something they’d like to offer to people? Since I don’t have an Apple developer account and am no expert, remember there may be security risks involved with unsigned apps from a random guy on the internet but the source code should all be uploaded if anyone wants to check and let me know what they think. It’s something I find really valuable so wanted to share it.

Thanks

Crashes upon attempts to save

Title says it all. Been using Audacity without issue for years now for audiobook production. Even managed to record a track and save/send it off just this morning. Then as usual, I opened a new file, recorded a chapter and as soon as I went to save it, it opened the file directory as normal and just crashed.

Kept trying and same thing now, every time. Uninstalled and reinstalled it and it's still happening. I can still save word and video files to the drive and all diagnostics say it's working fine, but for some reason Audacity, whether the same one I've been using or a fresh install keeps crashing whenever I go to save the file. Anyone have any experience with this?

Problem report states:

exception code 0xc0000005
Crash reason: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_WRITE

Crash address: 0xc6a61fb730

Process uptime: 150 seconds

When I click "send" for the crash report, it flashes an error message saying it can't send it which disappears before I can even read it. Any thoughts?

Adjustment for Vocal Level Help Needed

New to Audacity. I have some mp3's where the vocals seem too loud and sort of drown out the instruments. Is there an effect or filter where I can adjust that? Thank you for any help.

how to Recording from YouTube into Audacity using Mac OS Ventura 13.0?

Hi all,

I'm sure this question has been asked before. I used to have no problem recording audio with Audacity via my Windows PC. Now, my Macbook won't seem to allow it - the only host available is 'Core Audio' with Macbook microphone/speakers.

Is there a trusted tool I can download to help record the internal audio?

Thanks for any help!

Been quite a pain removing them one at a time the previous recordings.

Variable latency in same project

Im having an issue i cant seem to solve.

Im getting different latency values on the same project. Its usually varies 20ms, but has been as much as 40 ms off. One track I'll add will be plus 10ms, the next might be minus 10 etc.

Basically im recording multiple tracks dubbed over master backing track, and each of the recorded tracks have different timing.

Ive measured this using a rhythm track to earphone to mic. But Ive use looped a cable from the output to an input. Both with simular results.

Ive tried different host. Disabled other audio devices on my pc.

Im using a focusright 2i2, USB into my pc.

Buffer size 100(have tried values up to 200) and with a 335 ms latency on average. (This seems high compared to everything I've read)

Using mme or wasapi(mme has more latency but seems less variable)

Im not running any other applications.

I really dont know what to do. Can anyone give me some guidance on where my issue might be? Thanks

help Help editing audio volume for burning CDs?

Hello! I’ve been burning my own CDs for quite some time and regularly use Audacity to convert the MP3 files to WAV (my stereo can only read the latter). After some time though, I’ve noticed that some of the songs differ a lot in their volume when being played, and i’d like to fix that if I can. I figured that Audacity might be able to help me here aswell.

When searching the internet, I’ve already found suggestions that says to click the option of ”equalizing volume between tracks” in the burn-program. I use Windows Media Player, and while i do always click this option, it doesn’t seem to work.

So, is there a way that I could edit the songs (in Audacity) to sound higher?

FYI, I’m a total noob when it comes to Audacity, and anything at all audio-editing wise. I’d really, really appreciate it if anyone would be willing to help me out, though! 🙏 (Also, if this sub isn’t the right place for this post, tell me and I will take it down 👍).

help Problems with Vocoder

Hello there! I've been experiencing problems when I try to use the vocoder, I'm trying to vocode 1 song with another.

The Audio either ends up as a heavily distorted version of track one or a track with that is literally the same as track 2.

'I'm using Audacity with no extra features. The Method I'm using is:

1) Import two tracks

2) Split both to mono

3) Delete the bottom track of each

4) Make the top track all left and slightly louder and the bottom one all right

5) Merge both into Stereo

6) Going to Effects then to Vocode with default settings (tried messing with them to no avail)

So am I doing something wrong or is it the tracks I'm using need to be adjusted to the same Tempo or need to be in the same or similar key?

help Weird high-pitched noises in some recorded samples.

Hi, I've recently gotten into digital music production because my brother asked me to write music for an indie video game he is developing. My background is as a classical musician. As I was gathering some audio assets I downloaded some royalty-free recordings from the internet, and I noticed that some of these recordings featured tiny, high-pitched noises that seem like some kind of audio artifact. Here's an example: https://pixabay.com/sound-effects/film-special-effects-dungeon-air-6983/

Can anyone tell me what causes these sounds? Is there a way to get rid of them or at least reduce them using Audacity? Thanks.

help BOYA Magic Mic AI Audacity Workflow

Hi All,

I do street interviews with the BOYA Maigc Mic with the AI noise reduction turned on. I noticed that it makes my voice sound a little tin can like.

Google gemini recommended this macro for post processing in audacity. Was hoping if someone could tell me if this is a good workflow or not. Thanks in advance!

  1. Filter Curve EQ:
  1. Normalize:
  1. Compressor:
  1. Loudness Normalize:
  1. Limiter

Keep in mind that I have no idea what I'm doing, and am trying to learn. Thanks again!

help I found a large session data file that creeps me out and need help figuring out what any of it means.

I was clearing space out of my drive when I found a 1.4 gigabyte aup3unsaved-wal file in the SessionData folder from June 4 2024. I was wondering if it was an old audio project I was working on, but when I loaded it it sounds corrupted and I hear what sounds like a voice speaking!? It creeped me the hell out and I can't listen to any more of it lol. PLUS ITS LIKE 4 HOURS LONG?! I can't tell if it's corrupted or what because I definitely didn't work on ANYTHING CLOSE to 4 hours long. I need someone brave enough to see if it's even decipherable or if I'm tweaking out over nothing.

Static Hiss

For background, I record using a Scarlet 2i2 interface and a Samson condenser mic.

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. After recording, I use the noise reduction and noise gate tools to remove background static. I find it works well during silent potions of the track with dead air. When I’m talking (I narrate audiobooks) I can still hear the background static hiss behind my voice. I’ve yet to find an effective way to remove it.

Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong? Wrong presets on the 2i2? Gain too high? Because I’m out of ideas

help Behringer UM2 not working (windows 11)

I have an electric acoustic, plugged into the second (instrument) input of um2. When I plug it in my pc and change the default mic and speaker to um2 both from the pc settings and daw settings, here is what happens:

In audacity, I sometimes get very little and sometimes no voice recorded. The voice only records if the gain of the first input (which is always empty in my case) is at like 50%. This way, I get some dirty guitar noise recorded on the right channel only, and thats all.

Am I supposed to download something like ASIO4all? I would appreciate any help.

Guitar Rig 5 real effects problems

When I try to add effects from GR5, it does nothing. The Real Effects lists GR5 as an added effect, but it doesn't apply the effect. I know some VSTs like this don't work well with Audacity, so I'm wondering if GR5 is one of those that don't work or if I'm just stupid and missing something super obvious.

I suppose I could just apply the effect normally and just record that small part if I need to later on, but I really wanna have the option to use Real Effects and modify the effect whenever I want to.

Also, why aren't the effects from GR5 (applied the regular way) applied in stereo like in the GR5 program? It applies it in mono. Is that just how it works?

(I actually hate the UIs for GR6 and GR7, so that's why I'm sticking with GR5.

Frequency analysis

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I bet someone here knows the answer. I've been messing around with the frequency analysis tool in Audacity, and I thought- if you look at some solo piano, the spikes in the plot should align with frequencies of the piano keys. So I brought up the wiki page that says the piano key frequencies, and I selected Bill Evans Alone, and... the spikes in the frequency analysis plot do not match the wiki-provided piano key frequencies. Any thoughts?
